Which fight got you hooked ?
Which fight got you hooked ?
The first one for me was Benn v Watson on a black and white telly in my bedroom aged 16, haven't been able to think about anything since

Re: Which fight got you hooked ?
Watching Anthony Mundine firsts fights as he changed sports.
My old man telling me how he seen SSM vs ODH and telling me how great SSM is and howForrest didnt have a hope in beating him. Well, how wrong was he.
Watching Jones vs Glen Kelly, Kelly being an Aussie, and i see he hadnt lost a fight. Me thinking he could actualy beat this guy (i had never heard of Roy jones before) after the fight I was amazed at how grea Jones looked. Watched some more of his fights, and become a Jones fan. Sad to see him still fighting though. Should have retired after being knocked out by Tarver.
As you can see I really didn't know anything about boxing at the time. Never really watched a fight, and never even knew who the world champions were. Now I try not to miss a PPV

Re: Which fight got you hooked ?
I am relatively new to the scene, seeing as I have only been a hardcore fan since 2004. The fight that got me interested in boxing was not a major title fight or a match between two prestigious boxers. I remember it was a fight on ESPN and in one corner it was volume punching Lamar Murphy versus a slick southpaw in Damian Fuller. I remember Fuller did an excellent job of negating Murphy`s offense with a beautiful jab and move strategy combined with nice footwork. What struck me and what awed me was the commentary of Teddy Atlas. He painted an accurate picture of what transpired in the ring and it was all from a purist`s perspective. It clicked from then on out. I have been a huge fan since. I should watch that sometime soon.
Re: Which fight got you hooked ?
Murphy almost got Fuller in the 12th. Also lost a very iffy decision to Miguel Angel Gonzalez for a lightweight title on the Tyson/McNeeley undercard.Jpreisser wrote:I am relatively new to the scene, seeing as I have only been a hardcore fan since 2004. Good memory you have on you. I was biting my nails a bit when that happened. I have never seen the Gonzalez-Murphy fight but stylistically it sounds appealing. Murphy seemed to have some pop and I thought Gonzalez was a damn good fighter. Murphy`s resume seems to indicate he could hang with good fighters but not overcome them.Rover wrote:Murphy almost got Fuller in the 12th. The first time I saw Murphy was on the old USA's Tuesday Night Fights series with Al Albert and Sean O'Grady. Murphy and John Brown were two unbeaten prospects going at it. Brown won and went on to fight Gabe Ruelas, Corrales and Mosley; pretty decent career.

Re: Which fight got you hooked ?
I can't really remember why I started to like boxing, I can remember watching fights on Grandstand as a kid on a Saturday afternoon but I guess the first big fight I can remember getting really excited about was Tyson vs. Berbick in 1986.
Edit. Actually thinking about it, it was probably the Rocky movie that sparked my interest !!!

At least you got introduced with one of the worst injustices in history.Rover wrote:Chavez/Taylor I. I was 6.
I remember watching several fights earlier than this and I used to box my Dad, but the 76 Olympics & Rocky were when it became an obsession.
Re: Which fight got you hooked ?
The first fight I ever saw him in was against Cory Spinks. However, I have familiarized myself with 90`s boxing and watched him fight De La Hoya, Chavez, Tszyu, and either Johnson or Grove. He seemed like a pretty good fighter and fought admirably against Chavez. He got his butt handed to him by Tszyu though.Rover wrote:Which Gonzalez fights did you see? "Brown won and went on to fight Gabe Ruelas, Corrales and Mosley; pretty decent career." I could personally hang my hat on that. Were you a fan of Murphy`s?

Not really a fan of Murphy; didn't dislike him, either.Jpreisser wrote:The first fight I ever saw him in was against Cory Spinks. As for Gonzalez, he was at his best at lightweight. The Grove fight was televised on USA's Tuesday Night Fights.
Jr. welter and welter...he didn't have much success there.

Re: Which fight got you hooked ?
I'm more of a latecomer to the sport than some of you, I remember watching a few fights on TV, but when I was a little kid it never really grabbed me. The only two fights I remembered having watched from Childhood were Lennox Lewis vs Tommy Morrison, because I remember the people that were watching it telling me that Morrison was the boxer from Rocky V. Then I watched him get knocked out
...the other fight I remember was one of Tyson's mismatches the Julius Francis fight. It was on Showtime one of the few times that we had it when I was a kid and I made it a point to watch it. Even though I watched those fights though, I wasn't a fan of the sport necessarily. I did remember the name Lennox Lewis though, and years later when I was 14 I read in a newspaper that Lennox Lewis was still on top having just regained the Heavyweight title from some guy named Hasim Rahman. I saw the replay was going to come on HBO, and I watched it. It was a pretty vicious KO and I guess that was the starting point because I kept watching the sport closely since then. First truly great fight I saw though that I made me obsessed with Boxing was probably the Lightweight fight between Leonard Dorin and Raul Balbi. Gatti-Ward I later in the year was even more awesome. My first year as a full fledged boxing fan was a lot of fun.
