I agree with Larry Holmes vs Randall "Tex" Cobb was a beating and a mismatch. That was announcer Howard Cossell of ABC last pro fight that he called.fourreal wrote:Monzon vs Benvenuti (1 and 2)

But, Carlos Monzon vs Nino Benvenutti, especially the first fight was a very competitive match. It ended a la Rocky Marciano vs Jersey Joe Walcott fight I. Fight #2 between Monzon and Benvenutti, I do not recall a beating, but a controversy

Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
I know that that Klitchskos have been caned a few times for being boring but they have dished out a few beatings along the way
For Wladimir
v Chris Byrd II
v Samuel Peter II
v Tony Thompson II
For Vitali read
v Corrie Sanders
v Danny Williams
v Tomazsz Adamek
v Shannon Briggs.
Away from the KLitchskos Lennox Lewis dished beatings to
Hasim Rahman in their second fight
Mike Tyson
You could also add to the mix Evander Holyfield beat the daylights out of Michael Moorer in their second fight as well and dished out to Bobby Czyz.

Joe Louis-Max Schmelling II
Mike Tyson-Tyrell Biggs
The Chavez fight really did ruin Taylor's career and diminished his skills. Taylor was never the same again as he struggled with B-level journeymen Primo Ramos and Glenwood Brown afterwards. The olympic gold medal sensation would have rolled through them before Chavez I. He won a title after Chavez but so did Rosario and Camacho who took similar or arguably worse beatings.

Fight #2 between Monzon and Benvenuti was beginning to be a real beatdown. Nino's corner realized that and threw the towel in to try to save Nino some real punishment. Benvenuti protested by trying to kick the towel out of the ring, but the fight was over.elmersalsa wrote:I agree with Larry Holmes vs Randall "Tex" Cobb was a beating and a mismatch. Fight #1 between them was not quite like Rocky-JJW. It did end with a somewhat similar right hand punch but Monzon had clearly taken command before the end came.

Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
Worst beating I ever saw in person was in 1974 when Duane Bobick who was 16-0-0, 16 KOs butchered local Miami heavyweight James "Slim Jim" Summerville in MIami Beach, Florida.
Summerville was 6ft.4inch. and weighed over 245lbs. he had racked up some impressive knockouts on Miami Beach, including an upset over then 9th rated Jack O'Halloran.
However, even though he never decked Summerville, Bobick beat him to bloody mess and the slaughter was halted in round 2.
The 2nd worst pounding I saw; O.T. Davies battered Bowie Adams into a bloody mess in the 1st round in Miami Beach. Adams took a horrible beating before the fight ended.

Espana v Meldrick Taylor , the American was already damaged good but pride kept him upright for 8 rounds, but it was painful to watch.
Aaron Davis v Vinny Paz, Superman completly busts up Paz
Carl Thompson v Sebastian Rothman, only thing is i was calling for the ref to stop it as Thompson was taking such a beating, and then one punch and Carl is the winner!
Roberto Duran v Davey Moore, they brought Duran in and he just rolled back the years, one of the worst beatings i've seen.

Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
I seem to remember reading in Christian Guidice's excellent biography of Duran states that the crowd sang "Happy Birthday" to Duran after dishing out the beating to Moore. Recently I have been thinking of another beating that deserves to be mentioned on the list is David Haye dishing out an utter shallackering to the extremely tough and durable John Ruiz for 9 rounds.Old bones Ian wrote: Roberto Duran v Davey Moore, they brought Duran in and he just rolled back the years, one of the worst beatings i've seen.

I don't know what the great Smoking Joe Frazier was thinking in putting his son Marvis, an inexperienced heavyweight fight a man in his prime like the great Larry Holmes. The result? It was a total beatdown. Like a man beating a child. That was Marvis...A child.

Oh yeah. The was the Dark Side of the great Mike Tyson. It was horrible. Very horrible to see. He (Tyson) looked like a beast at the end of that fight... like if he was not human.
