Sullivan by very fast knockout! It wouldn't even be a contest!

Now Butterbean versus Claude McBride, or Butterbean versus Lamar Clark...then it would a toss up as to who won, but Butterbean falls way, way, way short against any of the elite fighters throughout history from 175 to heavyweight!

Comparing John L to the Jabba the Hut Bean is:

like comparing filet mignon with dog food.

like comparing a Mercedes to a Chinese Bycicle.

like comparing a real fighter with a fat circus freak.

Get real.

I was only half kidding. I would actually make this a pick em fight. Why? Because Sullivan, as he fought during his time, would have as much a shot against todays top heavyweights as Butterbean. Only blind hero worship could allow anyone to think Sullivan would be succesful against modern fighters. Sullivan would have served as a human punching bag for fighters like Tunney or Joe Louis. Or to even much lesser fighters like Rahman or Byrd. To keep insisting other wise is the height of stupidity.

Ok, lets get real. Comparing Sullivan to any modern heavyweight contender is like cpmparing "home run" Baker to Alex Rodriguez.
Or the Enola Gay to an f-14 fighter jet. Or an out-house to indoor plumbing.
Seriously, a competitve match between Sullivan and the much bigger and better skilled, yes I said better skilled, Butterbean is not as far fetched as you romantics seem to think.

Does this mean the crude talentless 1-6-1 (0) Mitchell Rose would have knocked out John L Sullivan like he did Butterbean?

Awesome!! Mitch Rose was born about 100 years ahead of his time! Damned bad luck.

In this case we are not comparing JLS to a real fighter.... we are comparing him to Butterbean....

JLS only lost one fight in his career, faced the best of his time and was FEARED as a fighter. Sure, he did not have modern training methods and today's techniques, but don't sell him short. With modern training he had the raw material to be an awesome fighter.

Better to stop feeding the troll -- I think he's getting too much enjoyment from these exchanges.

In the end while John Ls skill levels would be way below modern boxers, he was bareknuckle fighting 100 rd fights with some of the hardest, toughest, meanest scariest men who ever existed.

Butterbean is a fat slob struggling through 4 rd fights with novices, tough man entrants and the odd journeyman such as Mitch Rose or Abdul Muhaymin who accidentally beats him up.

A man who cant knock out a 50 yr old Larry Holmes cannot knockout John L Sullivan.

Im ashamed of myself for even replying to this troll

I agree with this statement. He just might have been a great fighter with modern training and skills. But if we are judging him by how he actually was, then he wouldnt stand a chance against modern fighters.

Hardest, toughest meanest, of HIS TIME. And remember, this statement may not be accurate since Sullivan was a racist and refused to fight black fighters.

i think butterbean would spend the whole fight trying to hit johnny boy, and eventually john would wear him down and KO him in the mid rounds... butterbean cant go into fights. and john is too talented to get ko'd buy slo as hell butterbean

I apologize if anyone thought I was trying to be a troll by posting this thread. That honestly was not my attempt at all :) I just thought the fight would be at the very least interesting considering how much the sport has evolved since Sullivan's times.

My opinion is that Sullivan would not be able to compete with any competent modern-day heavyweight, but Butterbean is not a competent fighter. I realize he is nothing but a sideshow. That is why I thought the matchup was, at the very least, interesting. I honestly didn't think the matchup was any worse than the Tommy Burns-Nicolay Valuev thread I recently read on here.

I have enjoyed reading what everyone has written, but I just wanted to let everyone know that I was not trying to upset or annoy anyone on this forum. I have learned a lot over the past few months just by reading and hope to learn a lot more. Wasn't trying to upset anyone.

Why are you apologizing? If someone doesnt like a thread you posted, then screw 'em. No one is forcing them to read it and there are plenty of others on this site for them to opine on. You're a member like the rest of us, and if you feel you have something boxing related you want to post, you have that right.

Well most of the posts were intelligent, with the exception of one poster...which I think everyone knows without it being stated, so you wasn't being a troll by asking the question!
