Tarver offers options to Calzaghe

Antonio Tarver's promoter Joe DeGuardia has opened up the possibility of a February super-fight with Joe Calzaghe.
"Calzaghe's back in February and that's our next date so let's see what happens," he told the Boxing Talk site.

"We looked at Calzaghe before the Roy fight came to light and he [Calzaghe] should know that Tarver is ready and able to fight him," said DeGuardia.

"Calzaghe should be looking this way if he really wants to make a mark in the US and establish himself as a player in boxing."

Joe better come up with another ailment quick!!!!

If Tarver is coming knocking then that's the Lacy fight forgotten, but he can't fight Tarver if he has Lacy to fight already. What a perfect catch 22 situation

Expect WBO defences in between the shenanigans.

I actually quite like Calzaghe in this one, I don't think Tarver is that good and could see Calzaghe outworking him.

But I'd imagine Calzaghe might be injured instead or maybe even making his 6431st defence of his WBO belt against Latvia's #6 Light-Middle.

The waiting game of Calzaghe fighting any top fighter is getting played out, Hopkins, Jones, Johnson, Tarver, Lacy..... he had chances clearly to face Johnson and Lacy and they never happened. I'm not buying into the hype again, as much as I want to see it, I'll believe it when it happens.

I do think Calzaghe has a great chance with both Lacy and Tarver, but its picturing it happening is the problem.

If a big fight is not made in 2006 were Calzaghe is in the ring with one of these, I think Joe's chances will have surpassed.

I am so disillusioned with the career of Calzaghe and have long been that I think there is absolutely no chance whatsoever of him fighting Tarver.

None at all. No way Jose. Not on your life. Niet. Nein. Non. No freaking chance.

For one reason or another so called 'career defining fights' have consistently fallen through against opposition he would have had a better chance with than against Tarver so I don't think this fight happens.

Sad thing is, as pissed as I am at his career I'd still get really excited if the fight was made and I'd buy it.

I'd probably even cheer Calzaghe on come fight night. Probably.....

I think we all know better than to even begin think that this'll ever happen. Tarver should call out Lacey if he wants a fight.

Despite all your scepticsm, this is fantastic news for Joe and gives him a couple of options for his next fight and I think that one of the fights will definately happen.

I would get excited over either fight and can't wait to see Joe spank the yank

Got to say i would be backing Calzaghe to the max if this fight came off, but until a big fight happens i'll be viewing him as a waste of talent

Bad style match up as Tarvers - far bigger, slicker, same speed, hits harder, long rangy jab. Cal stands a better chance against the overated Lacy

Tarver is greater than Calzaghe in EVERY aspect.

Calzaghe has a much better chance against Jeff Lacy. (Which is still small, due to fighting nobodies for so long)

say what you want about tarver, but he's faced a huge amount of top fighters in the last five years and has beaten them all (despite 3 losses). no wonder he's starting to look sloppy and tired: Eric Harding, Chris Jonson, Reggie Johnson, Montell Griffin, Jones x3, Johnson x2.

what the fornicate has Calzage done in this time? what will he do aside from try and con us into thinking he's a world champion? no way Calzaghe fights him. The terms are to fight in America. Shit, he can't even get big fights when guys are willing to go to his hometown.

Well I think most people on this board dislike Calzaghe rather than like him out of some blind patriotism, but as much as I dislike him i'll say he still has a slight speed advantage over Tarver and far far better stamina still. The fight isn't gonna happen, Calzaghe will say something like why should he move up to fight Tarver when he doesn't even hold a real belt or some other bullshit, but I don't think it's inconceivable that Joe could outwork him. There is no way Tarver should have been as tired as he was at the end of the Jones fight. If it did happen though I predict Tarver to control it behind his jab but it's by no means a full gone conclusion

Agreed, patriotism here is making me dislike Calzaghe - he's become a poster-boy for the 'Brits never test themselves in America (where the only decent boxing in the world happens) argument.

But I don't think Tarver has that many advantages over him at all, assuming JC can still box. I'm not really impressed with tarver at all, I'd struggle to pick him with confidence over 4 or 5 light-heavies.

It's Tarver's fellers doing the talking here, not FW...

Quite how this fits with tarver's plans to fight Toney, Tyson and Vit Klit I'm not sure.

Yes, i know, but Warrren has it as headline news on his site, and i'm sure he will be talking about it very soon with the media. What Warren needs to do is get his head down into negotiations with Tarvers men, come up with something solid, then make headline news!

Yeah, and then when Joe beats him everybody will cry about how Tarver was past it. Joe has made enough mistakes, but here it really is a case of "the devil you do, the devil you dont".
