TYSON FURY & THE FUTURE
I don’t see why so many people here interpret Price’s downfall on Saturday as somehow 'validating' Tyson Fury or proving he is the better man? It is obvious the two things bear no relation to each other whatsoever.
It all seems to be about how we ‘want’ to perceive events rather than what we know reality to be. Prior to Thompson, Price was perceived to have demolished a string of fair to good opponents and based on this many of us felt this form would continue and he was certain to be world champion. Then Thompson lands one shot and mass, forum-wide perception shifts to ‘all of Price’s opponents were weak, no one ever hit him back, he had a long history of fragility and was never going to make champion.’ All this with one semi-decent shot.
What I’m getting at is that Tyson Fury’s track record isn’t hugely different to Price's. Right now many are citing his wins against Chisora and Johnson as some kind of evidence that he is the better man. The fact is his record is as wide open to shifting interpretation as was Price’s. He has actually proven nothing yet, because a man of Thompson’s toughness and skill hasn’t challenged him and hit back yet. He hasn’t actually been in a fight like Price/Thompson.
Say Steve Cunningham KOs Fury, which personally I think is very possible, its abundantly clear that the Fury record so many are defending is going to change overnight into a laughing stock, just like Price’s did. The whole thing is riddled with red flags already at this early juncture - he once punched himself in the face. He beat a rusted and near-obese Chisora. Johnson was, once again, too gutless to fight. He lost to John McDermott - That's JOHN McDERMOTT! - The painfully obvious glass chin, evidenced by his wobbly win over Del Boy and getting decked by a light hitting Canadian was there for us all to see and, just like Price, for some reason we chose to ignore it.
Tyson Fury is not going to be a world champion, my British friends. No matter what other calamities await David Price, Fury has his very own set of faults and deficiences and it's only a matter of time until someone, possibly Cunningham, 'exposes' what's right in front of our faces.

Re: TYSON FURY & THE FUTURE
I was going to write something similar myself. I also agree with Maloney on this and believe it was a freak accident. If they have a rematch Price will KO Thompson.
I still believe Price is by far the better boxer than Fury.

Re: TYSON FURY & THE FUTURE
To be fair since the Naven Pajikic fight where he got dropped and also fighting John McDermott twice he has made a quite an improvement since then. He has worked hard on his conditioning as in the McDermott fight he was around 19stone+ but has since trimmed down to around 17 and a half stone which makes him alot more mobile and can fight a higher pace as well. He is also since having his Uncle Peter as his trainer started to use what he has got in terms of his height and reach advantages that he will have over his opponents working off his jab more and using his fast hands and bodypunching more effectively rather than steaming trying to bomb guys out, plus if needs can switch to being a southpaw to give any opponent more problems to figure out. But with his trash talking etc he is the type guy you will want to see fight whether you want to see him or not.
As for David Price I would say he is the better boxer in terms of technical ability. He (when he uses it) a very strong accurate left jab, a left hook to the body as well which like Fury's can also take opponents out and that booming right hand that has seen him dispatch Sam Sexton, McDermott and Audley Harrison amongst others. We still do now know if he can go 12 rounds as he has only boxed 41 rounds since turning professional back in 2008. Okay people will he has had 16 fights while Fury has 20. But Price has had promotional issues as he signed for Hayemaker Promotions just when Setanta went down the toilet and he has also had injury problems as well which is why he has not been as active as Fury has. As for his defeat against Tony Thompson, I do agree it was a bit of a freak one because Price has his hands down after trying to load up on his booming right hand and Thompson caned him for it. But Price is smart enough to learn from that mistake and will do his damnest not to repeat that one.
Will either them be a World Champion, at the moment I am not sure, if I had to money on it I would probably say Price still.

Re: TYSON FURY & THE FUTURE
I agree with the majority of the OP's comments.
Obviously, as a Price fan, Saturday was a bit of a shocker and I certainly didn't see it coming. It's difficult not to have doubts about Price's chances of reaching the very top after that sort of defeat as he'll inevitably have to take some heavy shots along the way and whilst that may have been a "freak" shot it does little to counter concerns about Price's chin.
It may well be that Price will need to become a more defensive fighter which would be a shame as he's been great to watch but needs must. The obvious example of how to do this has been Wlad, although whether Price has the ability may be another matter. There will be clear question marks over the future of Franny Smith I'd have thought after this, albeit unfairly. People will argue that Price needs a more experience trainer who can focus on his defence and ability to survive when he does get caught. Manny Steward would have been the obvious candidate before he died but I wonder if someone like Freddie Roach may be worth bringing on board, at least as a consultant as this will remain an issue which needs resolving if Price is to go much further.
As for the comparison with Fury, the Price stoppage tells us little more than we already knew about how a fight would go between the two. The obvious conculsion that most people will reach is that it would be a case of who lands first and it seems a stone cold certainty that any fight between them would not go the distance.
It will be interesting to see how they bring Price back after this. He is almost caught between a rock and a hard place at the moment as he's above most domestic challengers but not quite at Euro/World level yet. I have to say that I'd steer clear of a rematch with Thompson for his next fight as another defeat could really be curtains. I'd perhaps take a fight with someone like Towers just to win the Londsdale belt outright and rebuild his confidence. He could win that in a couple of rounds. Then I'd maybe look for a fight with Chisora who would provide a real test and go from there.

Re: TYSON FURY & THE FUTURE
Tyson Fury was beaten by John Mcdermott in their 1st fight. That was the biggest robbery I've ever seen. Fair enough, he won the rematch but both Fury & Price have been defeated IMO.
Price would still KO him out. This will give Fury the excuse to swerve him for a few years so he can make more £s

Re: TYSON FURY & THE FUTURE
I think Price's star was rising faster than Fury's in the last 6 months, but he has definitely flatlined since the weekend.
Fury has a good exposure fight in the States and is moving onwards steadily and has the sizeable joe public Ch5 audience behind him too.
I didn't forecast this fight happening this year anyway, but, you never know - it might now happen towards the end of the year unless a title fight or vacant strap appears on Fury's radar now.

Re: TYSON FURY & THE FUTURE
There were too many people questioning Price's chin to call this a "freak knock out".
He has been well matched as a pro and used his stand up jabbing style to good effect - although sooner or later he was going to have to be matched against somebody who would fight back.
You only have to look at how he struggles as an amateur againts punchers. We are not talking about a kid here but a 29 year old bloke who has been a pro for 4 years and has been a full time boxer for over 10 years - hardly a novice in any sense of the word.
To be fair to Fury, he has been whacked on the chin, gone down and then got up to knock the other guy out - just looking at Price's boddy language, I have never got the impression that he would be able to do that.
He is obviously a big man with physical attributes, but he has got a look of the Audley about him - he paws his jab in a very cautious way without committing himslef into a shot just in case he leaves himself open, and only steps up when he is mentally confident that he can beat his opponent.
Audley is the same - he looks great against an opponent he mentally believes he will beat, but put him in against tougher opposition and he falls apart both physically and mentally.

The first Mcdermott fight was close and even tho Fury won ugly he still won ,but people who hate on Fury moaned ,so Fury gave John McDermott a return and knocked him the fornicate out ,get over it ,like it or lump it ,still two wins to Fury
Price on the other hand was knocked senseless and made do the chicken dance, saying thats the same result as Fury winning ugly first time around against Mcdermott is just sugarcoating something more sinister against Fury me thinks ...nice try tho

Re: TYSON FURY & THE FUTURE
Won't happen. We interviewed Thompson last night on our radio show and he said he isn't fighting Price again unless the promotion gives him the $40,000 he was jipped out of when he fought Price the first time, plus an additional $100,000 cus he's the man with the say now; so if Price wants redemption, he better cough up $140,000 to get Thompson back into a rematch. As Thompson so eloquently put it when we asked him about the rematch clause "fornicate the rematch clause, I do what I want."TopGun wrote:I was going to write something similar myself. I also agree with Maloney on this and believe it was a freak accident. If they have a rematch Price will KO Thompson.

As for Tyson Fury, he will defeat Steve Cunningham either by kayo in 8 rounds, or he will win a decision in a fight similar to the Chisora match. In the end, Fury rises, and Price is back to the drawing board. HOWEVER, since Price is now no longer as 'special' as he once was, I imagine the Fury/Price fight will happen because it's less risk than going against a world ranked contender like Adamek, Arreola, etc.

But ultimately, if Fury goes down like that against Pavic he's going down hard against anyone decent who lands a correct shot.
Then, as I said, all of the praise for Fury will be revised and we will collectively realise his record was poor and his opponents unimpressive. Just like Price.

Re: TYSON FURY & THE FUTURE
Price was hurt by Chisora in round 2 but never looked like being stopped or even put down. In round 10, Chisora thought he'd hurt Fury and started windmilling for about 30 seconds, but Fury was firing back and didn't look hurt. That hardly qualifies as a 'wobbly win'.

Re: TYSON FURY & THE FUTURE
Compare Fury's first 16 opponents with Price's 16 opponents.
There is NOBODY on Fury's record that is as good as Tony Thompson. I include an overweight and unfit Del Boy Chisora in that.
Fury is ahead of Price in terms of development but then he's had an extra couple of years as a pro and another ten or so fights so its to be expected.
Price WILL still go on to reach the very top IMO. Defeat could well be the making of him.
Besides, show me one top heavyweight in history to have stayed undefeated??

If Price was to be matched from now on against credible opponents, I wonder what odds a bookie would give on Price going his next 5 fights with out being knocked down or Knocked out ?
Makes me laugh haters making excuses for Furys resume, its ether Mcdermott won the decision in the first fight ,Chisora was fat,Kingpin was crap blah blah blah every time he wins there is an excuse !
Not once do these same posters care to point out the huge improvements in body and sole Fury has made, because at a young age he won most of those early fights on just heart and determination, his body conditioning was terrible thing to look at ,but recently he has listened to his critics pulled his socks up and got in terrific condition + shown he can box to a game plan...something very few on here thought he would ever be able to do.
IMO Tyson must be considered one of the most improved fighters in the UK !
Its sad fact but i agree with what was said on Bunceys podcast , if Fury was not a gypsy more people would like him doing well ..fact.

He got a gift in in his 8th or 9th fight at 20 years old against a British title challenger. He rematched himand stopped him. even Mayweather and Broner have had people saying they lost fights a lot further down the line than Fury. We cant hold that against Fury. I for one thought Froch lost comfortably to Dirrell, yet there has been absolutely no call on here for a rematch, ever. Fury gets a raw deal on here when really, in the ring, he has done little wrong.kevo wrote:Come on, he may have won the fight on paper, but there's no way he 'won' that fight.mrpedigree wrote:The first Mcdermott fight was close and even tho Fury won ugly he still won

Re: TYSON FURY & THE FUTURE
I strongly disagree. Thompson is not a puncher and the punch that collapsed Price was hardly a haymaker. Price was stopped several times as an amateur too. The comparisons with Wladimir getting stopped are different in my opinion. 2 of Wlad's defeats were to visible exhaustion and in the Sanders fight he was caught time and time again bang on the chin by a big puncher. He continued to get up despite this. Thompson did land on Wladimir a few times during their fights to no effect.MarkMcBurney wrote:Compare Fury's first 16 opponents with Price's 16 opponents.

Also, punch resistance aside I believe Price has several holes in his game boxing wise. Going back to the amateur days lateral movement confuses him and Thompson used this to his advantage. Price also makes it to far too easy for smaller opponents to get close to him; an ancient Skelton was able to get inside on Price within the first minute of their bout. Price has got excellent power but in terms of boxing finesse I believe Tyson now has the edge.

It could come down to a few things:
-whoever lands first wins
-one simple outboxes the other (but more likely to be a far)
-Fury could wear Price down then stop him. Price's stamina is unknown over long rounds and Fury's engine is getting better every fight

But Mayweather and Broner were champions at that stage. For a novice, McDermott was about the equivalent. Yes, i would have liked to see Froch-Dirrell again, i thought Dirrell could have shut him out with a bit more self belief. I only mention that because Froch, as a forum favourite, gets such a free pass on here, when i thought it was a complete robbery.
Re: TYSON FURY & THE FUTURE
Tyson Fury couldn't knock John McDermott out first fight and most people had it as McDermott winning. Price K.O'd him with zero trouble was too easy for him. That says it all really. Fury isn't a good boxer IMO. Look how out of shape McDermott was / is. As a professional sportsman its ridiculous. And Fury could not KO him first fight.
I do worry bout Price now, not only his chin but his lack of defensive boxing skills he will need to work on them if he wants to progress up a level.
Fury will get found out soon enough, he can duck and vacate titles for as long as he wants, he is just putting off the inevitable.

The grown men on here who use expressions such as "haters" and "nut huggers" are a tragic group. Consider reading Orwell's essay 'Politics & the English Language', it might improve your ability to write and to express yourself.
Or maybe you want to sound like 13 year old American boys.

I always felt that the Fury/McDermott KO looked suspect. I'm not saying John took a dive, but he did appear to voluntarily lose.
Either way, a future world champion would wreck John McDermott. It's hard to imagine Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis or a Klitschko needing 19 rds to deal with John McDermott. Matt Skelton sorted him in one.
