Where did it go wrong for Warren?
Re: Where did it go wrong for Warren?
Benn/McClellan/Eubank II were down to his working relationship with DK at the time, no? The same reason Tyson fought in the UK a fair few times.
Re: Where did it go wrong for Warren?
Well the McClellan one is somewhat of an aberration - Had he not had that working partnership with DK then, it wouldn't have happened. That's no slight on Benn, it's one on FW's matchmaking. He's definitely risk averse. Is that just good business sense or is it actually really good promoting that you can sell manipulated ranked fighters with padded/unproven records as a real threat? The Dark Destroyer wrote:Still matched his fighters tough though, they certainly weren't 95/5 or 80/20 kind of fights, were they?orbtastic wrote:Benn/McClellan/Eubank II were down to his working relationship with DK at the time, no? For every Benn/McClellan you have a Benn/Giminez or Perez or another no mark. It's his standard MO.
For Burns/Martinez (one he negotiated Burns into the mandatory spot for, against a guy who had beaten one of his fighters not long before) you have Burns/Evenson/Layrea/Cook etc.
All promoters have a slightly benevolent approach to matchmaking but FW has a better track record than most for soft touches in defences. In-house matching I've no real issue with, ALL promoters do that, it's just good sense.
Look at his first world title defence promotion?

Agreed mate, I think FW gets too much heat for doing what other promoters do.

I wonder where it all went so wrong for the millionaire, highly successful and well connected Warren who dismantled the old guard cartel that ran British boxing; I imagine that being one of the most successful boxing promoters of the last 25 years will dry his tears. He has put good shows on, helped to build good fighters into champions and helpe keep the BBBoC afloat after the Michael Watson law suit.
There's none of us perfect and blameless and most of us in his shoes would have played situations to our advantage first. He has done more good than bad for British Boxing for me though Eddie is a good looking man

The Sun column is vitriolic bile of the highest (or lowest) degree.

Simple really: TBA, carrot dangling, milking the masses, lying prick.

He'd have been a fantastic politician (or big business man - which is what he is...)ALI wrote:Simple really: TBA, carrot dangling, milking the masses, lying prick.

His love of the permanent cold shoulder with a side portion of chip, once he's judged someone has "wronged" him, wouldn't get him too far in politics.

exactly! well said.bengulnaci1 wrote:Good, solid, sometimes dangerous match making, for me, is what helps fighters get better, progress and, in the long term, solid bets for more success (in general).
W@rren has always failed at this abysmally. Bar Calzaghe, who anyone with decent connections could have promoted, W@rren's priority has always been safe 95-5% odd fights. To think, I used to get excited when there was a 80-20% fight on. We can argue the toss about 'its for TV' and 'its abut money' but seriously do I care? I care about good, competitive fights. Putting more of those on we garner more viewers, less negativity and probably higher viewing figures, if people know that's what you deliver ie Dana White and UFC.
W@rren is last of this 'milk the public and don't give a fvck about the next one because they are daft and will fall for all the hype and bs and pay again' brigade.
as far as i can see warren never did anything for anyone except in self interest. but where is all the money? he mustve made a fortune over the years , what with his cynical business practices etc. how much is he really worth?
Re: Where did it go wrong for Warren?
I agree that thos fights did happen, but the boxers were involved in a lot of easier fights and these fights cam about because the boxers themselves were at the end of their tether and practically threatened to leave FW if he didn't make those fights. The Dark Destroyer wrote:Is this the same Warren who put on shows like Benn-McCllelan, Hatton-Tszyu, Calzaghe-Kessler, Degale-Groves, Burns-Martinez, Mitchell-Katsidis, Benn-Eubank II? That's just off the top of my head.

I went to Ricky-Kostya, Calzaghe-Lacy and Woods-Johnson 3 all in the space of 12 months. Can any other promoter beat that?

"What has he done for me recently?" is an equally as big question though. He had 17 cards last year (according to boxrec), the most notable of those were-mickey1975 wrote:I went to Ricky-Kostya, Calzaghe-Lacy and Woods-Johnson 3 all in the space of 12 months. Can any other promoter beat that?
Haye v Chisora (a fight he claimed he wasn't the promoter)
Burns v Mitchell
...Cleverly v Karpency?

To be fair other than Haye v Chisora, Chisora v Vitaly, Khans fights, and Froch v Bute - how many big fights was there involving UK fighters last year?
The sturm fights and barker v martinez maybe.

I dont think thats true, i dont recall many fighters coming out and verbally confirming they wanted fights, when did you ever hear calzaghe calling out RJJ etc.

Vitali v Chisora was a K2 promotion was it not, rather than a Warren one?Finn wrote:iamasadlittleboy wrote:"What has he done for me recently?" is an equally as big question though. Moses v Burns was a good fight on paper but not really a big fight, lets not make out that Moses is well known despite his short WBA title reign
Groves v Johnson was bout that saw someone take a pay day and return from retirement. Again not a big fight in the grander scope of things.
Last years big fights with a Brit also included a certain Mr Hatton and his brother v Brook was a pretty big deal and Brook v Jones was a notable bout, certainly more so than Khan v Molina
