George Groves
George Groves
Just got watching the boxing from last night's Wembley bill. Glad to see George Groves win. Good prospect, who I think is ready to move up I feel. And he's a modest, likeable lad. Unlike James DeGale, who has never done anything likeable in his entire life.
Do others feel he is ready to move up? How long before he is ready to fight for world titles?

Re: George Groves
At what point does someone stop being a prospect? I mean Groves has been around for a while now and I've long had him as my next 'big' thing and if it weren't for various fights falling through he'd probably already be some form of World Champion.
As is, I imagine he will have a title shot by the end of the year.
As for De Gale, I think you believe the media stuff he portrays a bit too much, he comes across as a nice enough lad but says a few things to sell fights, a bit like David Haye, although I think he now realises that was a mistake. People were just waiting for the Groves defeat to slag him off and that's what happened.

Re: George Groves
Agreed on Degale. The build up to the Groves fight was royally misguided. There's a cracking interview with him on The Suns website from yesterday in which he comes across really well.MarkMcBurney wrote:At what point does someone stop being a prospect? That was the level of opposition Groves was fighting in his 1st 10 fight, poor fight

I am a fan of Groves, needs to 'fill out' and get his true man strength, but he is a big strong SuperMiddle who can get stronger at 12st and will be a World champ imo.

I haven't checked the WBO ratings lately but Groves was actually ranked #1 last time I checked, so I think it is a case of he can have the shot once him and his team want to enforce it.
Re: George Groves
Offensively he's very good. Good jab, picks punches well, and when he gets an opponent going he's a good finisher. He's already got a good dig on him but i can reckon in a couple of years when he gets his man strength he'll hit even harder.
I've not seen last nights fight but from what i've heard his opponent didn't have the quality to test Georges defence, this is where he still has alot of questions to answer for me. The Degale fight showed he can be defensively sound when his mind is on the job, the Paul Smith fight however suggested he's still prone to lapses in concentration and can be easily tagged. His chin doesn't look the sturdiest either.
His last 2 fights have been against opponents who offensively didn't offer much, he now needs to fight someone who poses a significant threat. Brian Magee would be a good step up in class for him on the Froch-Kessler under card then, assuming he beats Stieglitz, Abraham in September.

Re: George Groves
You must remember it was set up at short notice, and already had another fight scheduled in May when this was set up. Groves hasn't been very active due to one reason or another, so I have nothing against this as a keeping busy fight.@markmcgee87 wrote:That was the level of opposition Groves was fighting in his 1st 10 fight, poor fight
Re: George Groves
But Haye comes across as a royal prick in the build up to fights as well. Or at least he has done since moving up to heavyweight. I'm not sure comparing DeGale to Haye is any form of compliment.MarkMcBurney wrote:At what point does someone stop being a prospect? Re: George Groves
I agree in some ways to Groves coming across as modest and likeable but I disagree to an extent. Some of the interviews ive seen him do with kugan cassius he comes across as an arrogant bellend *normally when adam booth is about to be honest* but then some interviews like the one he done with Kugan after last nights fight he came across very likeable! Sometimes i wonder if being around David haye and adam booth so much has had a negative effect on his personality although I think Adam Booth is a very smart guy and a very good manager and trainer aswell.ILikeBeer wrote:Just got watching the boxing from last night's Wembley bill. Re: George Groves
I dont think thats true. I agree that Abraham would fight anyone which i really think he would as he pretty much already has. It would depend on what he was being paid though and he makes far too much money fighting in germany to fight Groves on the undercard of Froch/kessler. Never gonna happen.mullenman wrote:i think george is very good

Adonis Stevenson would be a very good test and a good fight.binipop wrote:Offensively he's very good. Good jab, picks punches well, and when he gets an opponent going he's a good finisher. Re: George Groves
I don't know if you can still class George Groves as a prospect to be honest.
Good jab, probably his best shot. Picks his shots well from behind the jab. Ranked well across the sanctioning bodies. Would be good to see him get that fight against Mohamed Ali N'Diaye at some point.
Pity that Bute is scheduled to fight on the same night as the Froch/Kessler card in Montreal, would've been a good one for Groves to get on his record and also the fact Matchroom have close links with the IBF.

Groves v Bute would be an interesting matchup . Would certainly put Groves on the map above DeGale.Duffus91 wrote:I don't know if you can still class George Groves as a prospect to be honest.

Re: George Groves
Groves is good and well built at the weight; he comes across really well and hope he does well. He is improving and seems to have advanced beyond DeGale. I like to see Groves box - he looks for the hard punches and seems to enjoy being in the ring. I'm not sure if he's seasoned enough for the very tough names just yet but imagine he'll be there by the end of the year.
(I like DeGale as well though he let himself down with the Groves stuff; if he can keep improving he'll do well though i think the Olympic Gold has put lots of added pressure on him).

Disagree about his chin. Anderson is not a good technician, but he can bang,m and GG got up to stop him!
Smith is not the most skilled but he can dig also, GG was not badly stunned, and he came back to stop him. His defence can only improve, he is not chinny at all.
He took full blooded punches and came back.

Not sure.
He mentioned 2 more fights after the Kessler fight - Bute and Ward. Ward will be at Lt Heavy by then and the carrot of giving us a great British World Title fight will convince him to fight GG.
Froch seems to fight not just for himself but for the fans.
We want it, he will give it to us.
Re: George Groves
I'm not saying he shows Price-esque levels of chinniness (is that a word??) but he does look a little shaky when he's caught and in both those fights he was a bit fortunate that it was at the end of the round when he was in trouble.Ratchet Exits Nu wrote:binipop wrote: The Degale fight showed he can be defensively sound when his mind is on the job, the Paul Smith fight however suggested he's still prone to lapses in concentration and can be easily tagged. Also, I don't think Anderson or Smith are proven big punchers at all as neither of them have fought at world level or stopped anyone of note. They're domestic level fighters and if George is showing vulnerabilities in the chin department against that type of opposition then he's going to have to tighten up defensively against the top boys.
I do think though the lapses in concentration have come against guys he possibly underrated a little. Against Degale you could tell he was wary of what was coming back at him and defensively was excellent, this bodes well for when he does step up in class.
He's my favourite domestic fighter to watch but he has my heart in my mouth at times!

Anyone that takes a fullblooded shot from Smith or Anderson will know about it. He was not put tp sleep, Price is chinny, Groves is not.
It was his defence that let him down, but it can ony get better.
