Q for Billy Nelson - why is Ricky not fighting Broner?
Re: Q for Billy Nelson - why is Ricky not fighting Broner?
i'm a noob really and I sometimes have a look without posting, it's just my opinion Tomasino; someone (a poster) once did well for himself and got a foot in the boxing world and there was a bit of jealosy - I think sometimes people like to sound off at successful people and go a bit far. Some successful people can take it and others can't.

That's very true in all walks of life, sadly.

I really am not a fan of burns, it surprises people I don't like him or his style. Seems a lovely person.
His career at the moment is buzzing but the last year has been a joke with cancellations & promotional difficulties I'd like too see him face Rees before broner.
Burns is very fit & very hard to cut down & stop I'd like to see how broner handles him

You quote " I don't LIKE HIM or his style " what don't you actually like about him ? You even said that he seems a lovely person ! What has happened in his last two proposed fights is not his fault, you also said you would like to see how broner handles him but want to see him in with Rees first, who clearly isn't world classhurlock wrote:I really am not a fan of burns, it surprises people I don't like him or his style. Yeah I read that back
Just don't like his style one bit & don't rate him.
Rees can handle himself on any stage & ain't what he was but still a good fight for anyone.

Fair enough, I still believe Rees is a step back now for burns ! Would like to see Mitchell v Rees more.hurlock wrote:Yeah I read that back![]()

Rees would also act as a yardstick & for that reason would pile more hype or pressure for a broner fight

How many times has Burns fought in Scotland?ThereByTheGrace wrote:Burns is not, and never will be an "Elite" fighter. For as long as he's fighting in his comfort zone at Braehead/Secc if they know the fighter his fan-boys up here will pay to watch.
Answer the question Billy please- why is Ricky not fighting Broner?
First time it was the weight, second time it was preparation time and well the third time is dependent on your next answer (My guess is you don't want to go to America).
Fool me once shame on you; fool me twice shame on me.
Fool me three times?Let's hope not!
Burns has "fan-boys" because they see him for what he is, a champion with the heart and dedication of a lion. To say he's ducking Broner, in what would be his biggest payday by far is an insult to the warrior and heart of Burns.
Re: Q for Billy Nelson - why is Ricky not fighting Broner?
Is it a managerial strategy then Ste? I can imagine that Ricky has no personal fear of facing Broner but that does beg the question why the bout has not been made. It certainly looks like Broner wants the bout.Ste Hawkins wrote:How many times has Burns fought in Scotland?ThereByTheGrace wrote:Burns is not, and never will be an "Elite" fighter. Re: Q for Billy Nelson - why is Ricky not fighting Broner?
in fairness Broner and Schaefer are just calling Burns out to fight on their terms, I'm sure there's no discussion at all of them coming over to the UK to fight. For such a high risk fight, which you would hope that Burns privately realises it is, there is no way you can enter into that sort of thing without having some of the conditions in your favour.
Burns is a belt holder as is Broner and whilst Schaefer is claiming he's offered more than Burns would ever earn, we don't know if what was offered is reasonable to travel to the US, take the training camp there and make the fight and end up with the sort of money left over in the end that you deserve for a big unification match against a dangerous opponent.
It's the best fight in the LW division and it would nice to see it happen, there does seem to be a suggestion that Alex Morrison doesn't fancy it, and boxing is a business, and probably realises that without the belt Ricky has a lot less options in terms of maximising his earnings - so unless it was life changing money then perhaps it's good business management for the lad who is one of the most honest, hardworking pros out there.
As usual Billy N will rant and rave when he'd ultimately be better keeping his counsel, but whilst Ricky's height and ridiculously improved skills would definitely give Broner his toughest day so far, it feels inevitable that Broner will be too strong at the weight and way too quick ultimately - If I was handling Ricky, I'd certainly want at least a couple of 'money' fights before I went into that particular lions den.

Re: Q for Billy Nelson - why is Ricky not fighting Broner?
If Alex Morrison doesnt have confidence in Ricky maybe he shouldnt have let him fight for the World title,i mean can you see Broner having a warm up for Burns.?
in my opinion when you become world champ you should take no backward steps or tune ups,Rickys been at world level longer than Broner and i know Adrien Broners a special talent but hey this is world championship boxing
maybe Burns needs to demand Morrison let him fight Broner otherwise bye bye, some of these old fashioned managers and promoters need to move with the times, the fans demand it especially as we`re paying through the nose to watch boxing these days as theres little boxing on terrestrial TV

Demarco and Ponce deLeon aside, Broner has had nothing but 'warm up' fights. Burns would be Broners best opponent so far IMO. I've said it before but I think DeLeon beat Adrien.

Yeah maybe he shoulda lost to De Leon but remember Broners only really made 1 defence of each world title so its obvious theres gonna be some donkeys on his record, its the same with everybody, you cant have tune ups if you dont hold a titleTomasino wrote:handsofstone wrote:If Alex Morrison doesnt have confidence in Ricky maybe he shouldnt have let him fight for the World title,i mean can you see Broner having a warm up for Burns.?

Re: Q for Billy Nelson - why is Ricky not fighting Broner?
I did too Tomasino and DeLeon has some real power but Broner has really come into his own. Rees is a high level boxer and very tough and game; I don't think he'd ever been off his feet and Broner did really well against him. I imagine that Gavin hits nearly as hard as Ricky and Broner weren't at all concerned. He has been doing pretty much what he wants in bouts and he does look class when he opens up. Style make fights and Burns is a man to be admired but I do think Broner would beat him.Tomasino wrote:handsofstone wrote:If Alex Morrison doesnt have confidence in Ricky maybe he shouldnt have let him fight for the World title,i mean can you see Broner having a warm up for Burns.?

Re: Q for Billy Nelson - why is Ricky not fighting Broner?
I can certainly imagine that Ricky is less distracted, less bothered by outside training things and it's obvious that he is dedicated in the gym. Strength is only one attribute though and getting to the later stages to impose it may be a problem. Could Broner be brought over here to box? I think that he would be more unsettled outside of his comfort zone and may not enjoy the weather + th weight may not melt off quite so easy.billy nelson wrote:Over 12 rounds I'd say Ricky Burns is going to be stronger than Bronergoldenears wrote:in fairness Broner and Schaefer are just calling Burns out to fight on their terms, I'm sure there's no discussion at all of them coming over to the UK to fight. fair play for a reasonable answer BNbilly nelson wrote: Over 12 rounds I'd say Ricky Burns is going to be stronger than Broner
Sadly the Malignaggi fight has been made now and that ship has sailed for Ricky, of course as his trainer you have to believe that your fighter would win that fight, and as big a fan of Ricky's as I am, and he's constantly proved his critics wrong, having seen Broner a couple of times I just think he's a step too far. Martinez has been exposed as not quite the fighter we thought he was, Katsidis was obviously on the way down and battle worn, Moses was a good solid win, and Mitchell the same, but none were anywhere near Broners' level. Speed and size wise I just think he'd have too much for Ricky. I (and I can tell you, most of America's fight fans) would be cheering from the rafters if I'm wrong and Ricky were able to shut Broner up, but I can't see it.
More sadly (especially if you are potentially right Billy), I think the opportunity of this fight has probably gone now - Broner will beat Paulie (GB aren't stupid, Broner is their next PPV potential along with Canelo and Paulie is being fed up for him) and he's not going to come back to 135 after winning a 147lb strap.
Ricky is going to be left scrapping it out with Vasquez and (GOD PLEASE NO) Abril at 135. This was THE glamour fight out there for Ricky - i'm not sure where the next one comes from unless he is planning a move to 140 and is ready to mix it with the top talent in that weight class - which is again a level up from anything (Broner aside) at 135. Rios, Matthysse, Khan, Garcia etc... would Ricky even get those fights? Not sure a move to Fast Eddie is going to make any difference in that respect.
Just my opinion like.

Burns just didn't want the broner fight.
Can't blame him, as he knows it would be a difficult fight he would probably lose. I'd imagine the Rees hiding was the fight where burns decided to swerve broner for good.

Re: Q for Billy Nelson - why is Ricky not fighting Broner?
Business and survival wise can see why they would swerve Broner, and also the things I said above about Broner negotiating as if he was 100% in charge when Ricky was also bringing a belt, however legacy wise it was the only fight for him and now it's gone. I respect BN as a trainer for his achievements with Ricky and understand him saying that he thinks Ricky would be too strong for Broner, but his team weren't prepared to put that on the line and they can't run away from that fact.allahsnackbar wrote:Burns just didn't want the broner fight.

But sadly it looks like we'll never know because Ricky Burns, act on appalling advice, refused to fight him on multiple occasions. The Broner ship is sailing all the way up to 147 and if he wins that why on earth would he come back down to fight little old Ricky Burns?
The level of misguided arrogance diplayed by the Burns camp in this saga has been incredible. They continually make comments like 'why should we jump for him?'. Its Broner and Broner alone who has made Burns a name by repeatedly calling him out, its Broner who is the one who'll fight anyone and its Broner putting the money on the table.
It is absolutely blatant that Burns is ducking this fight. Warren was prepared to take it in June in Vegas but yet again the Burns camp cry off. If Burns fights Rees or Harrison in Glasgow in May it will be a sad and embarassing night for British boxing.

Reading all these posts it very amusing ! Do you seriously believe Ricky himself is scared of fighting Broner ? Get Real ! A fighter will fight anyone, and Ricky's record isn't a perfect one so that isn't a problem either, the fight will happen, team burns just want as much as possible in there favor and there's nothing wrong with that !

To go through two camps and have them both end in a pull-out will have sickened them all and I feel for them. Maybe Billy could be a little more accommodating but try seeing things from his perspective for a minute.
Re: Q for Billy Nelson - why is Ricky not fighting Broner?
This is an age old problem. One with an easy answer. If Burns and his team thought they could beat Broner, then the fight would have been made by now. Everyone knows why it hasn't been made. Broner wants the fight because he knows he will win. Boxing now all seems to be about keeping face. I don't really care if fighters lose when fighting the best. There is no shame in it.
World champions should defend against the next best challenger...and if they don't then strip them (of the title) simple.
There shouldn't even be any other fight available for a world champion anyway. Thats where the problem is.

I don't think it's a case of being scared Jessi. It's more about confidence in beating Broner.
