Kevin Mitchell at The Guardian

Post by chad »

Like many other boxing fans each day I vist sites like Boxrec to get the latest boxing news and gossip.

Over the past few weeks I've started to visit The Guardian website more and more to read the views of Kevin Mitchell, their boxing and tennis correspondent. I wasn't fully aware of his work until recently and have to admit I find his stories a very good read. He seems to get exclusive bits of information that other journalists either miss or don't think about asking for. His coverage of the whole Matchroom, Groves, Warren and Burns saga has been a delight to read.

Anyone else want to join the Kevin Mitchell fan club

Blimey you're late to the party. If you like his reporting you'll probably like his book on the Benn - McLellan fight - the glamour of violence. A very good read.

His work on Klitschko-Haye is among the most biased boxing journalism I've read.

I'll check out his other work though.

Kevin is a good guy and a very good writer.

Can I just point out, though, that BoxRec News was first with several of the bits Kevin then did a more comprehensive job on

I always enjoy his stuff on both boxing and tennis.

You don't see that many drugs in boxing stories, so ill give him credit for that article. I'd like to see a boxing writer really get into this subject in depth someday.

Yeah I watched that recently myself. Just noticed he was in it. I enjoyed the programme. I enjoy film and cinema just as much a boxing.

He isn't.

Might seem like it given that he's quite balanced. A world away from those in the thrall of Al who produce platforms for one-sided articles - and there are plenty of them.

We beat everyone to Groves, then ducked out the fray, save for the odd dispatch RE Selby confirmation :TU:
Sheehan was first with Groves, I believe? Even a broken clock is right twice a week, etc.

That was speculation, not a quote and verification. Twice a day, by my reckoning.
 That'll learn me!

Sheehan got it right. He called it first. He knew it was going to happen and wrote it as such. Call it bollocks when he gets it wrong but when it's right, it's right.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sp ... hroom.html

This is speculation, as signalled by a question mark, and the writer doesn't seem to be sure, probably because he doesn't have his own sources:

http://www.BS.com/hearn-announ ... ves--62926

This isn't speculation:

http://news.boxrec.com/news/2013/groves ... rren-hearn

and it was the first 'confirmed' one up after Sheehan's, because I quickly got his story verified.

Dead Mouse wrote:There was a story on the Saturday with a confirmation quote from Booth. The language is more definitive IMO. Anyway, this is by-the-by, the original post was to remind our beloved fellow forumites that there's other members of the circle jerk. Otherwise we'd never achieve that glazed look. We're just all doing our best to keep up with WBN, who have an uncanny knack of uploading verified stuff within seconds of it being verified elsewhere. It's a miracle. We really should praise them.
Yes, it was up on Saturday tea time, whereas BoxRec's was up on Saturday morning with what I'd say is definitive language:

"BoxRec News can confirm that Eddie Hearn's latest signing is another defection from allegedly Promotions (sorry, W Promotions) - Commonwealth super-middleweight champion, George Groves."

The quote from Booth is a big bonus though and that's the way to do it, if one can :TU:

But regardless and leaving this no doubt universally boring issue to one side, you're quite right, of course - there's little the likes of us can do about the onward march of WBN. I particularly like 'their' videos/photos which are always clearly flagged up as being 'WBN photo/video'. We can't compete with that.

Kevin Mitchell has written two very good boxing books - "War, Bay - The Glamour of Violence", which is about the Nigel Benn-Gerald MacClellan fight, and "Jacobs Beach", about American boxing during the mob era.
Recommend both.

Kevin Mitchell has written some good books and is knowledgeable on Boxing. The guardian is a hypocritical, whingeing, student paper whose circulation is critically endangered and loses money faster than a prostitute that pays the client

Kevin’s on Twitter, he seems a good guy, witty and approachable, so is well worth a follow. I don’t read the press, local or national, unless researching a specific subject, but I’ve dug out some of his stuff recently using Nexis.

I'm not a big fan to be honest. I'm on the guardian every day but haven't really got time for Mitchell. Seems very biased at times and unable to see any other viewpoint. He's one of those that thinks all anti  -khans are daft racists
