Examples of men/women who were destined to become champions, but something along the way destroyed their shots at becoming something more.... or at least put a dead halt to it for many years....
Tony Mundine was being groomed to face off against Carlos Monzon, and the plan was for him to get one more win, and he'd get his chance. Enter 'Baaad' Bennie Briscoe. The fight took place in Paris, France and Briscoe blasted Mundine out in five rounds.
Another good example, Duane Bobick. The great amateur standout who had beaten both Holmes and Stevenson, was climbing up the heavyweight ladder like nobody's business and it was only a matter of time before he would get his hands on Muhammad Ali. However, there was a problem, Ken Norton was also in line for Ali and there was bad blood between the two men, Norton wanted that 4th fight. Against his better judgement, Ali said he would fight Norton if he could beat Bobick. Bobick was stopped in the first round in MSG after getting clocked in the throat and nailed with a tremendous punch soon after. Ali, hoping Bobick would be successful, ducked Norton and fought Spinks instead.
