I was watching this video of a distant cousin named Jack Gardner, 28 - 6 (23 KO's), former British and European Heavyweight Champion, and top ten contender for World Heavyweight Title.

Both Gardner and Williams were top ten heavyweights of the early 1950's.
How would you rate their technique?
Were they true contenders or would you rate them as gatekeepers on the world circuit in today's world?
My personal opinion:
Gardner had incredible power in his right hand and left hook, but throws very few combinations. He fought like a brawler/puncher. And he threw his uppercut way too high towards the end. And Williams was very experienced and many considered him the better boxer, but Jack Gardner was the better puncher.
I feel fighters back then were tougher, less pampered, and the only real difference is that most weighed less than the ones today.
An average sized man back then was 5' 9 and weighed 160 lbs. while today it is 5' 10 and 190 lbs.
