Re: Tough test for unbeaten heavyweight Gary Cornish on Friday
Well anyway, good luck to Cornish, my criticism was of the poor opposition, but seeing how he got on against Evora I can now understand why they need to match him against cannon fodder. Other prospects like Fury, Chisora, Price etc were facing better opposition by then, Cornish has very limited experience in comparison and needs to develop at a slower pace. I don't think we'll see Maloney putting him in with Zack Page just yet...

Ok il put it bluntly, hes shit&will get knocked out once he fights someone with a pulse...Understand??MachoMan09 wrote:What do you mean by an "accident waiting to happen"? Going to be a long learning road for the 'Highlander'. Plenty of time though at only 25. He had 7 fights last year and he's all ready had 3 this year. We'll have to see where he is in 2014. He's certainly not ready for the likes of Tom Dallas, nevermind John McDermott or Matt Skelton.

Fully agree, and that is a sobering thought for a physically massive 25 year old heavyweight prospect who's 14-0.
So, instead of upping the quality of opposition, maybe they need to lower the bar even further and book some proven tumblers. Get Cornish to 20-0 or 25-0 before testing him
Re: Tough test for unbeaten heavyweight Gary Cornish on Friday
Better still why not get him to 50 -0 then he can break marcianos record for being an undeafeted heavyweight ....

In the heavyweights all you've got to do is stay unbeaten and opportunities come your way eventually.
Re: Tough test for unbeaten heavyweight Gary Cornish on Friday
Yes but staying unbeaten isn't that easy, and surely staying unbeaten in any weight will bring opportunities eventually !Jeff Thomas wrote:In the heavyweights all you've got to do is stay unbeaten and opportunities come your way eventually.

It's different for Heavies. Once they get a few wins people start talking about them. It happens on this forum. Towers, Whyte and Cornish get talked about on here because they are unbeaten heavies. There are plenty of unbeaten fighters in the lower weights that don't get a mention. It's like that in the national press and promoters see £££££ when they have a heavyweight.jessi wrote:Yes but staying unbeaten isn't that easy, and surely staying unbeaten in any weight will bring opportunities eventually !Jeff Thomas wrote:In the heavyweights all you've got to do is stay unbeaten and opportunities come your way eventually.
As far as staying unbeaten being 'not that easy'... Any decent fighter can stay unbeaten if he is matched right.
Re: Tough test for unbeaten heavyweight Gary Cornish on Friday
I don't recall Tommy Gilmour or Gary Cornish making any claims about how far he will go . He's fighting regularly and being watched closely by Gilmour in each fight. He'll get taken aong nicely and when he's ready he'll be stepped up . We don't know who he's sparring and how he gets on in the gym. But Gilmour will know !!!
It would be good though, if he took a step up on 11 May in Glasgow on the undercard of Ricky Burns' next fight.

Tommy Gilmour has said( and not for the first time Ian Millarve) that Gary will be Scotland's first Heavyweight British champion, well he defo won't be based on Fridays display, although he's only had 13 fights he has loads of basic faults and a dodgy chin by the looks of it.dalcumly wrote:I don't recall Tommy Gilmour or Gary Cornish making any claims about how far he will go . So you obviously think Tommy knows what he's talking about regarding a fighter and there development in a gym? how many fighters has Tommy trained,he doesn't even have his own gym for fighters to train in.
Re: Tough test for unbeaten heavyweight Gary Cornish on Friday
Put down in the 1st by a fat 3-11 cruiserweight. Good work. He needs to feast on bums for a good while longer until he's ready to cash out.

Another learning fight. Nowt wrong with the big mans chin. That was a hell of a shot right on the sweet spot and he recovered instantly. Dominated after the first, confidence was building nicely rounds 2-4 and Evora would have been stopped in 5. No doubt. Onwards and upwards. Anyone on this forum who has a game heavy/cruiser requiring a decent spar PM me ;) Aye, that includes Simmons.
Re: Tough test for unbeaten heavyweight Gary Cornish on Friday
I haven't seen this fellow Cornish in action but it's obvious to me that any boxer who hasn't had an extensive amateur career needs to learn his trade in the pros. Right now Cornish is slowly picking up the basics the way the old time boxers did. Every match is a learning experience and Cornish has plenty to learn. There are a few guys on here who expect any unbeaten boxer to take on top twenty fighters no matter how few fights they have on their record.

Exactly. His full potential, of which there is a significant quantity, will be realised. You'll not hear any bull shit hype from the man himself. He's an apprentice going about his education. I'd be more than happy to progress to 30-0 before advancing on the domestic top tier. Stay tuned.Cap wrote:I haven't seen this fellow Cornish in action but it's obvious to me that any boxer who hasn't had an extensive amateur career needs to learn his trade in the pros. Did Alex Morrison not offer Cornish 1k per round if he boxed Simmons? Maybe just a rumournaturalmass wrote:Another learning fight. Nowt wrong with the big mans chin. With all due respect it would be a total joke if he was 30-0 before contesting domestic level titles. I acknowledge the need for him serving his apprenticeship due to a lack of amateur experience but there would (IMO) be something wrong if he needs that many fights before even facing a Sprott, McDermott or Skelton. I'm not sure what the long term benefit would be if he was known, in a few years time, as that Scottish heavyweight who built an impressive unbeaten record and then got starched by the first decent guy he fought. Surely there is a reasonable amount of cannon fodder opponents required before tougher boxers are put in the other corner ? Personally I just don't see the point in extending the unbeaten run for the sake of it. Maloney could have got Tom Dallas to 25-0 by now if he'd have kept matching him against tumbling latvians instead of stepping up the quality of opposition, but ultimately what would have been the point ? As the saying goes, sxxt or get off the pot. I wouldn't want to see Cornish rushed and ruinned but its coming to something when your 14th opponent is a forty year old loser from Portugal.

Billy, a serious question - if Cornish's camp asked you to train him, would you ? I don't think a Scottish heavyweight has ever gone unbeaten into double figures, and he must be doing something right to get to 14-0 even against bums. Nobody can question your credentials and credibility as a trainer, would you take him on ?

I partly agree with you but surely there are plus points in building a fighter such as to gain more experience with fights and decent sparring, gain confidence, build a bigger fan base and make more money. Look what happened to Dallas after he got thrown in against Price. It totally shattered him as a fighter.JimJim2009 wrote:Maloney could have got Tom Dallas to 25-0 by now if he'd have kept matching him against tumbling latvians instead of stepping up the quality of opposition, but ultimately what would have been the point ?
Not everyone will be a world champion.

Dallas would never hace been a world champion, but Price was far too big of a step for him, but fair play to Tom for taking the fight and to Uncle Frank for putting it on.ScottDetonator wrote:I partly agree with you but surely there are plus points in building a fighter such as to gain more experience with fights and decent sparring, gain confidence, build a bigger fan base and make more money. After Zack Page, Dallas needed a lot more learning fights.
