Channel Five pulled out of boxing ?

Whilst the value of BARB data will always be argued, we don't have any other reliable measuring stick to use. The above figures paint a clear picture why Channel 5 would drop boxing. Boxing seems to detract from their usual Saturday night viewing figures.

I don't think there is any reliable measuring stick to use. BARB is there but it's crap.

All we know from those stats is that one person or more in 244 UK households, from a sample of 5200 households, watches Law & Order on a Saturday night. And one person or more in 227 UK households from the same sample of 5200 households watches boxing on C5 when it's on.

All the other stuff about x million people, etc... is fabricated.

That's not to say that you're incorrect when you say that's what C5 will go off when making their decisions, they may treat BARB like a Rabbi treats the Talmud.

Rightly or wrongly, I suspect that whether advertisers use the BARB figures will be the defining factor. I imagine they will take into account any purchase peaks following a campaign, but the BARB stats are bound to feature heavily when the call is inevitably made.

Mick did an amazing job getting the C5 deal in the first place. No other promoter managed to pull it off. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Hennessy will come up with something.

Good luck to him mate. If Hatton can't pull anything off I can't see Mick doing it - certainly not on terrestrial. Looks like he'll have to sell his soul to Wazza. I wonder if Eddie will make a move for Barry ? Nice addition to Brook for a Sheffield show going forward.

It's probably a lot more simple than people are talking about here. I'm sure the average Channel 5 TV exec knows next to nothing about boxing, or the names/titles involved, so to say 'they will be peeved about fighter X not fighting fighter Y' is probably wrong and not the reason at all.

It's probably as simple as: outgoing sports director guy liked boxing and was willing to give it a go, incoming guy doesn't like boxing and wants to go in a different direction, probably just churning out more tat. Unless they get someone else in who is at least even slightly receptive to boxing being on their channel, then it will be the end. Big shame.

I do agree though that boxing has done this to itself to some extent, it could do with a massive UFC-style rebrand to bring it in to the modern age.

Yeah you're probably right actually! Talking of a UFC rebrand, thats got me curious! The UFC are leaving their contract with ESPN, i wonder if channel 5 might buy into the UFC as they're looking for a new tv deal in the uk.
