Heavyweights and Body Shots
Just watching Andy Ruiz Jr yesterday on the Bradley/Provodnikov undercard got me thinking about why dont Heavyweights stop many opponents or even throw many shots downstairs when fighting,i cant think of any big fights when a heavyweights been stopped by a body shot, the only 1 i can think of is Price stopping Skelton.
what about you fellas, can you refresh my memory or tell me 1 i dont know :??

Joe Frazier has got to be one of the best heavyweight body punchers, he used to double people over when landing.

Um, Fitzsimmons vs Corbett (no, I wasn't ringside for that one). ... Tye Fields crumpled Airich with a left hand to the body from the southpaw posture in Prizefighter ... Joe Bygraves did for Henry Cooper with left hooks to the body ... without checking my files I am pretty sure that Henry went down twice in apparent agony from left hooks to the body and was counted out the second time ... Without checking (too busy at the moment) my memory tells me that Ingemar Johansson dropped Franco Cavicchi for the full count with a right to the body in their European heavyweight title fight ... I was doing some research for a retro piece in the next Boxing Monthly and I was surprised to learn that Georges Carpentier twice knocked out Bombardier Billy Wells with body punches (once in Belgium, once in London -- I thought Wells got chinned in those fights), and "Fainting" Phil Scott was done in by body punches by Young Stribling, with the news agency reporter whose report I read making note that there was no "cry of foul", which apparently was unusual for a Phil Scott bout ... As you must have gathered, I love this stuff --- Graham.

He did have a spell with Robert McCracken in his corner and the damn fool split with him. Just think of the topline sparring he would get at the EIS up in Sheffield due to McCracken being head of the GB Boxing Squad and this article http://news.boxrec.com/news/2012/exclus ... erve-price on this hallowed website lists who he has been with causing Al Bernstein to famously remark live on Five that Fury has had more trainers than Madonnas has had lovers!!danconnollyeire wrote:Was that McCracken in tysons corner? Remember that in the first couple of rounds. Quite fantastic he came out for the next round and started dominating the fight. DW could've easily been stopped.Londonirish wrote:Danny Williams nearly stopped John McD with a body shot broke his rib..

Re: Heavyweights and Body Shots
Phil Scott was notorious for collapsing to the canvas after being hit in the body and claiming a low blow (with a view to winning by DQ). Gene Tunney, in correspondence with George Bernard Shaw in May 1930 (The Prizefighter and The Playwright: Gene Tunney and George Bernard Shaw; Firefly Books) was scathing in his opinion of Scott, writing: “I believe Scott the most cowardly man I have ever seen in the ring. There is but one thing about pugilism Scott is interested in, and that is the money. He is a complete disgrace and should never attempt it again.”Final round wrote:Graham Houston wrote:Um, Fitzsimmons vs Corbett (no, I wasn't ringside for that one). ... Tyson & Frazier were great body-punchers at heavy, obviously.
& Holyfield floored Mercer for the first time in his career with (I think) a left hook to the body... I'll have to check on that one though...

Re: Heavyweights and Body Shots
The first Carpentier v Wells fight sounds a barnstormer, Carpentier was down in the first by a right hand , he got up at 9 bleeding badly. 2nd round was all Wells, with him punishing Carpentier along the ropes and flooring him with a left.Graham Houston wrote:Um, Fitzsimmons vs Corbett (no, I wasn't ringside for that one). ... But by the 3rd Wells had blown up, and Carpentier discovered the body shots were working, he punished Wells in the 3rd, and in the 4th he put Wells down for the count with a big right to the stomach.
He must of thought that worked well, because in the 2nd fight Wells didn't last a round.
I had the Wells fight confused with the Carpentier v Joe Beckett fight, which also ended in a round. I've got a nice collection of postcards from that fight. For some reason i think the Prince of Wells was in attendance at one of Carpentiers fights in the UK, might of been one of these 2.

he also put Bert Cooper down, and hurt him badly with left hooks downstairs
speaking of Holyfield, he was hurt to the body himself, by one of those whipping left hooks Toney specialised in.
Mike Weaver's consistent work to Coetzee's body throughout their fight, punishing shots with both hands, was a huge factor in that stoppage IMO
Re: Heavyweights and Body Shots
Tommy Morrison stopped Yuri Vaulin when behind on cards with a good left hook to the body and scored few other stoppages with same punch.
Also Tyson v Spinks first knockdown was good body shot

Despite that, Ruiz Jr has a serious amount of speed both in his defensive movements and in his hands, which you could argue are one of the quickest in the Heavyweight division right now.Final round wrote:Ruiz Jnr has been training at Arreola school of conditioning

Ruiz Jr has been one of my favourite prospects for a while and although he's never been "in shape" (he turned pro weighing around 300lbs) he's always been ridiculously fast, throws amazing combinations, moves well and...oddly seems to have pretty decent stamina (has done 8 rounds at a decent pace).Duffus91 wrote:Despite that, Ruiz Jr has a serious amount of speed both in his defensive movements and in his hands, which you could argue are one of the quickest in the Heavyweight division right now.Final round wrote:Ruiz Jnr has been training at Arreola school of conditioning
For my money he has the fastest hands in the division and the best combinations. He may not be a monster puncher (certainly not feather fisted either) but he's a stinging puncher who lands very clean and very often, fantastic fighter who, if he can lose another 10-15lbs could be the long term future of the division...

6' 2" 246 Lbs same as Wlad Kiltchsko. On his debut he weighed 297lbs only 10 or so LBs less than Valuev!
I'll have another go and try appreciating what graceful speed the fat pud has .

Thanks for that Graham, that's some put down by Tunney! worse than a body shot. ouch*Graham Houston wrote:Phil Scott was notorious for collapsing to the canvas after being hit in the body and claiming a low blow (with a view to winning by DQ). Honestly if you can ignore the jiggles and just look at his hands you will see what I mean. He was training with Freddie Roach earlier in his career and apparently showed a fair few folk that he had exceptional talent even if his body was less than great.Final round wrote: Tbf my eyes never got past the two fat blokes with boxing gloves on.
