Was Shane McPhilibin anything more than a journeyman?
There can't be too many people who had had a worse year that Shane.
One year ago he was the British boxing darling who beat Leon Williams for the title, and was then at the receiving end of some terrible timekeeping against Enzo Mac.
Since then he has turned in a tepid performance against JLD, been stopped by Chris Keane and lost every round to Menay Edwards.
Was he anything more than a journeyman who struck lucky (he hadn't won a round against Williams before stopping him in the twelth), or are there other factor to his run of bad form like falling out of love with the game, boozing?
It just all seems a real shame

PR - without being disrespectful to him. I would say its the former.
Leon Williams struck lucky in his own right.

Yes...Leon went on to get stopped in a round by Conquest and lose every round to that Latvian fella whose name I will not even try to pronouncestujones wrote:PR - without being disrespectful to him. I would say its the former.

Arturs Kulikauskis - after beating Williams he's gone on to beat former EBU European Cruiserweight Champion and WBA & WBO World Light heavyweight Title challenger - Yuriy Barashian.
Kulikauskis is looking to extend his winning streak when facing Menay Edwards on the Steve Goodwin bill at the Civic Hall,Grays,Essex on the 5th April

I don't think he was ever the darling of British boxing. Cruiser is by far the poorest divison at World and British level. Just look at Williams level. I don't think Shane's ever expected more than British title anywaysthepocketrocket wrote:There can't be too many people who had had a worse year that Shane.

I do think he was a darling, if only briefly, or at least had a cult following. He was, for a while, a staple of the Bunce show.danconnollyeire wrote:I don't think he was ever the darling of British boxing. Cruiser is by far the poorest divison at World and British level. At least he had his moment in the sun, no-one can take that away from him.
But you are right, Cruiser was, and is pretty poor

Journeyman is apt. He was never a prospect or a contender so that is the only label that fits. I'd rather drink cyanide then watch him to be honest. Yes he should have got the win against Enzo in the 1st but Enzo was still shaky in 2nd and 3rd round and anybody who is 1/8th decent would have had him out of there

Shane was never the prettiest to watch, but for the rest of his days he can say he was British Champion. Good on him.

He may never have been a prospect or contender in your opinion but he was definitely a champion.lefthook82 wrote:Journeyman is apt. Maybe it's possible to get lucky with one punch, you can't get lucky for 12 rounds.

He didn't really, he showed he could take a punch but lost every second of every round up until he landed against Williams. But fair play, they were great scenesCoco wrote:He may never have been a prospect or contender in your opinion but he was definitely a champion.lefthook82 wrote:Journeyman is apt. Williams isn't exactly Sugar Ray Leonard, but I was shocked at how poor he was against Kulikauskis. He didn't want to know. It was Kulikauskis only win outside Latvia.joelouis1234 wrote:thepocketrocket wrote:Yes...Leon went on to get stopped in a round by Conquest and lose every round to that Latvian fella whose name I will not even try to pronouncestujones wrote:PR - without being disrespectful to him. Shane is a journeyman now , as hes openly said his heart is no longer in it .
Lets face it when you come off the Williams and Enzo fights it was never going to get any bigger than that for him , its probably pretty hard to motivate oneself afterwards for lower bouts , especially when hes known to like a few beers .
I spoke to him at a show after he boxed Keane and he said "Yes Keane is a descent boxer and a nice lad , but i know i would have beat him had i actually cared , like i did when we was amateurs" or words to that effect .

Re: Was Shane McPhilibin anything more than a journeyman?
I would love to know what was wrong during the JLD fight, as the performance was so tepid.
I got stick at the time (bring it on LOL) but he never seemed to be that upset regarding the Enzo farce. I was told that was just the way he dealt with setbacks, and that he would be back to try to reclaim the gold.
Not saying that was wrong ( how the hell would I know?) but he seems to have easily reverted to type, and that is a shame.

For JLD fight he told me he took if fully serious , trained at an army camp etc but just couldnt get it going on the night , felt like there was nothing in him .thepocketrocket wrote:I would love to know what was wrong during the JLD fight, as the performance was so tepid.

He has gone, in a year from fighting for titles, to a guy that even non-championship level fighters (yet) are beating with ease. How is that showing disrespect? I asked why?
Bloody hell. No-one is saying that he is a bum or anything. Just a quick downhill trajectory, which a guy on this thread has said he admits to being down to a lack of motivation. And if you read my OP, I never made an definitive comments, just gave different reasons it may have happened and left it out there to be discussed
Of course no-one can take that British title away from him, he will be showing that off when many of us are dead. However, it was/is a topic worthy of discussion

The motivation was there if he won he would be back in the title mix. Plus Williams is a nice guy but terrible boxer, so dont know where that statment about it dont get no bigger after the Williams & Enzo fight comes from
And if anyone looks back over the old posts, I said all along Keane would be the first to stop Shane, and I guarantee this, Chris will also Stop: China Clarke, Tony Conquest, Wadi Camacho, Neil Dawson with out a doubt if they fight him, so it was no bad thing Shane getting stopped by him either, Chris is a very fast, heavy handed fighter.

The motivation was there if he won he would be back in the title mix. Plus Williams is a nice guy but terrible boxer, so dont know where that statment about it dont get no bigger after the Williams & Enzo fight comes fromShane looked to me like he cared ploughing forward in the 3rd round against Keane throwing bombs after being encouraged to put pressure on by his corner and walked on to a big right hand. The 2 rounds before that he was unusually cagey, but that was not because he didn't care, that was because he knew Chris would hurt him like no else has been able to in 10oz gloves. He had sparred Chris for the Williams fight and we all knew then if they ever fought again what ever the condition mentally or physically Shane would of been in, there was only ever gonna be that same out come. So if he did make that statement to you then I can only think that it was hurt pride talking. Shane is a nice guy and we wish him well what ever he decides to do, and what ever people think about him he is down in history has winning the British Title and that can never be taken away. Some people could only ever dream of it.
No one is denying you said Chris would stop shane , I had never seen keane before that fight so i couldnt assess that beforehand .
But to clarify what i meant earlier , the Williams fight came completely out of nowhere, he was given an unlikely title shot , of course that was a big fight for him , bigger than the keane fight for certain , and the enzo fight was always going to be the biggest fight of shanes career regardless of the outcome .
Shane is well known to not live the life of a boxer , so imagine how his training is when hes no longer bothered ? take nothing away from keane , he won at the end of the day and did exactly what you predicted , but surely you can see that would have been a far tougher bout had shane gone in with intention , come on pal you have enough knowledge to know what im talking about , dont just try to make us all buy into keane , im sure he will show us himself if thats what we should do
Its nothing disrespectful as shane is a friend of mine but he has openly said he no longer has the desire , he took a fight against menay edwards last week and didnt tell anyone , he just went and did the fight , if he was going there with intention would he have not been telling people he had a fight ?, especially when shanes always managed to shift a few tickets .
Hes had his glory and won a british title , something he will always be able to proudly say , but now boxing is to pay the bills .
Re: Was Shane McPhilibin anything more than a journeyman?
Shane can punch, but that's the lot really. He got a title shot against a poor champ off the back of a win over a perennial loser. Williams, who was incredibly pedestrian in that fight, as well as before and since, nevertheless boxed his ears off, but McPhilbin found the big punch while Williams was gassed. He had his moment and grabbed it, and you can't take that away from him. There was a chance the fairytale would continue because Macca is so fragile, and Shane can hit, and yeah, he found the guy's chin, and might have finished it if not for the early bell. Truth is, though, that Dickinson or Keane would probably have finished Macca in the next round, but Shane got outboxed for the rest of the fight. Against guys he wasn't likely to knock out, he wasn't competitive at all. A good shot can win you the British title, but you need more than that to sustain that level.
Re: Was Shane McPhilibin anything more than a journeyman?
As Shane's manager it has been very frustrating and since the Enzo fight his hearts just not been in it can you imagine knocking a former world champion down having him gone then the bell rings 47 seconds early the lad was just robbed blind and I truly believe there was more to all of this than the timekeeper making a mistake and on top of all that Enzo goes onto fail a drugs test and the board don't even do the decent think and rule the fight a no contest and give Shane the British title back. It made a huge difference to his purse not going into the JLD fight as champion. Shane will never be a great fighter to watch but when he trains and has a bit of fire in his belly he can be very dangerous but unfortunately since the Enzo fight its just not been there if you can remember him winning the British title at 2 weeks notice having Enzo in all sorts of trouble and doing well in the heavyweight prizefighter instead of his last 3 performances I'd be very grateful.

A fair few British cruiserweight champions were of the 'journeyman' variety - Roy Smith and Andy Straughn, Buster Keeton, Tee Jay and of course Leon Williams. On their level, all good fighters and the Smith vs Straughn fight - it was either on 'fight night' or 'world of sport' bloody good scrap that was!
