Why doesn't the WBC reconise the British title?

On fighters who are British champs like Witter, Cook and Pickering they have EBU and Comm but not the British title next to them.

Howcome?

Good point. I think it might be they just don't mention domestic titles. It's actually quite hard to think of someone other than Skelton who's in the rankings and has a domestic title. But if say Colin Wilson (Australian) was in their rankings, I think they just wouldn't bother putting that title beside his name.

It's a different thing not recognizing a title and just not bothering to put it beside your name though. I'm sure they took the British title into account when they did Skelton's rating

I'm not sure the WBC recognise any domestic titles do they? Although it wouldnt surprise me if they recognised Mexican and American domestic titles.

Isn't one of the US titles affiliated to the WBC? Either the NABF or USBA.

Maybe a bit of revenge for the BBBoC not recognising the WBC many moons ago.

Often think how Cooper vs Ellis would have gone. Cooper was probably a better fighter in his latter years and might have won this.

Why didn't the BBBofC co-operate? Not being affiliated to the WBA or something? Seems harsh and petty to be fair....I mean, you'd think the BBBofC would want Cooper to do well. And why did Cooper simply not just ignore the BBBofC like Brian London when he went to fight Floyd Patterson in the late 1950s?

The simply dont list national titles, otherwise they would have to list German, british, Japanese, Mexican, Thai, Philipino ect titles

Remember it was when the WBC was a fledging organisation. When Patterson was champion, there was only one organisation (now known as the WBA).

If I am correct, the first split world champion was Ali for one organisation and Ernie Terrell the other. I think it was Ali with the WBC and Terell the WBA - but soon Ali re-unified the title by whooping Terrell.

When Ali got his licenced revoked - I believe the WBA awarded Ellis the title whe he fought Quarry in the final of the elimination torunament. I also think WBC wanted Ellis vs Cooper for vacant WBC title - but the BBBoC said they didn't recognise it so he would have to defend it in the states. Reigning New York Heavyweight World champion, Joe Frazier, fought Ellis for his WBA title and the vacant WBC title (taking Cooper's place).

The BBBoC did a similar thing with the WBO, didn't recognise it - hence Nigel Benn's first few defences of the WBO title HAD to be abroad, and were in the states. That was untill Benn vs Eubank 1 - when all of a sudden (and I'm sure finances didn't dictate

) the BBBoC recognised the belt

Funny how things change as I anxiously wait the latest IBB, WBF defence in the UK.

My info might not be correct, it was for a school project I did (on the history of heavyweight boxing) about 8 years ago. It could be wrong.

2 Things I think about those events.

1) What would have happend between Cooper vs Ellis.

2) I know why he wasn't included, but how would have Sonny Liston done in the elimination tornament. Floyd Patterson was there, very nearly making the final and indeed was Ellis' first title defence. Imagine Liston vs Frazier - The Ugly Bear was still dangerous up untill his death.

I thought Sonny Liston got stopped in 9 rounds by someone in an elmination tournament....I think it was Leotis Martin or Thad Spencer that stopped him.
