Is the great white hope a thing of the past ?
Is the great white hope a thing of the past ?
I remember Mike Tyson once quoting that "all white men where pussy's !"
Now the top heavyweights seem to be mainly white. Have the eastern europeans taken over the heavyweight scene for good or do you think the tides will soon change again ?

Why does it matter? Surely we just all want to see some decent heavyweights, whether they're from the States, Europe, China, Polynesia....

Nobody said it mattered. It was just a question wether anyone thinks the current situation will change.Deserter wrote:Why does it matter? Surely we just all want to see some decent heavyweights, whether they're from the States, Europe, China, Polynesia....

I think we as people should not focus on race or skin colour, especially in sport. Of course 'The great white hope' is a thing of the past, in the past with the ignorant views of 'some' in that time. In life The quicker we all realise that we originated and came from 'one' the better.

The focus has changed to being that of a "great American hope"

That's a very good point.iamasadlittleboy wrote:The focus has changed to being that of a "great American hope"

I remembre years ago, mainly because boxers are bred from slums, it was predicted that a lot of the top fighters would come from the old Eastern bloc.
Perhaps the US has become to nice in comparison!

"surely matters" because I took 30 seconds to throw a topic together ? Come on deserter, stop trying to be so politicly correct ! No ones racist, stop making a mountain out of a molehill as per usualDeserter wrote:Well for someone to take the time to question if the current situation will change, it surely matters to them?mickey1975 wrote:Nobody said it mattered. Jessi, 2 things:jessi wrote:"surely matters" because I took 30 seconds to throw a topic together ? Come on deserter, stop trying to be so politicly correct ! No ones racist, stop making a mountain out of a molehill as per usual
1) Why am I trying to be politically correct?
2) How am I trying to make a mountain out of a molehill?
I thought I'd just made a pretty straightforward comment and the replies from most on here seem to support that view.
Re: Is the great white hope a thing of the past ?
Is the fact that traditionally a lot of the heavyweights were black just done to genetics? I mean, a lot of times people of certain ethnic descent grow bigger than others. (People from the West Indies for example can be quite big guys.) For want of a better/more politically correct way of phrasing this, it's not uncommon to see black guys who are tall/big.
That's why a lot of basketball players are black, as well as a lot of heavyweight boxers.

The picture's a lot more complicated than genetics though. Look at some of the guys in the south Pacific - Fijians, Samaons, Maoris etc - yet bar David Tua, how many have become boxers? Culture/environment plays a prevailing role in determining outcome.ILikeBeer wrote:Is the fact that traditionally a lot of the heavyweights were black just done to genetics? There was a theory that when the slaves were originally taken from West Africa that they only took the big, strong, fit ones because they would be the better workers. Therefore a superior physical race was transplanted to the Carribean/AmericasILikeBeer wrote:Is the fact that traditionally a lot of the heavyweights were black just done to genetics? Re: Is the great white hope a thing of the past ?
right. in fact the rise of the heavyweights in russia is not about poverty in fact it is the opposite - the russian billionaires wanted to invest in sport, not just boxing...sometimes to avoid taxation...and that is why we have what we have now
(tennis/football has enjoyed a similar success for russia)
you never saw professional russian boxers in the days of communism did you. but you can bet your arse there were plenty of poverty stricken russians who could box well.

That's my whole point, they end up in rugby rather than boxing because of cultural circumstance rather than genetic predisposition.columbo wrote:a lot play rugby though and they're built like brick shit houses! Re: Is the great white hope a thing of the past ?
I think the Great White Hope has since been replaced by the Great American Heavyweight hope since The Klitchskos began clearing out the Heavyweight division in 2006 when Wladimir knocked out Chris Byrd and then Vitali came back in 2008 after four years out with his injury problems since 2006 every single American Heavyweight hope in the shape of folllowing has been...
Lamon Brewster stopped by Wladimir in his revenge match
Ray Austin Koed by Wladimir
Calvin Brock Koed by Wladimir
Tony Thompson Koed by Wladimir TWICE
Eddie Chambers Koed by Wladimir
Hasim Rahman Koed by Wladimir
Chris Arreola Stopped by Vitali
Kevin Johnson dominated by Vitali
Shannon Briggs battered by Vitali.
So from an American perspective the Heavyweight division looks extremely grim even though you have got the likes of Deontay Wilder who needs to step up in quality in the next two years to show if he is the real deal or not, Bryant Jennings is coming along and Seth Mitchell needs to get past Johnathan Banks next who DEFINITELY will not be going to be fighting Wladimir as he is now training him.

Re: Is the great white hope a thing of the past ?
It only matters if it's a heavyweight, and from America.

2, you just over Analyzed things to much.
Your either a politician or like assuming questions asked from other people are for personal reasons rather than interest.
