Interesting and illuminating piece about boxers and formal education by Marc Stockings (an educated man himself):

If you haven't read Marc's stuff before, he is putting together a good list:

Certainly 'back in the day'. Higher education has become more widely available (in the UK, at least - though it's again heading the other way) so one hopes it can be pursued hand in hand with boxing.

I used to teach some kids who were elite swimmers. I always thought their out-of-school commitments would negatively affect their academic performance. In fact, it seemed to be quite the opposite. They were just incredibly organised - every hour was set aside for something or other, including their homework, etc. They rarely, if ever, used their sport as an excuse for missing anything.

So, it can be done! :TU:

These days you don't need A levels to go to many 'universities'
The old polytechnics let anyone in to let people do things like the science of watching soap operas.

A-levels are flawed anyway! Theres a big difference between doing A-levels and doing a degree in terms of difficulty. I was told that by a lecturer actually, he told me that a lot of young kids who have just finished their A-levels are completely out of their depth when they come to uni.

If you think they are out of their depth after only doing A Levels how do you think they cope after doing the gnvq.
Most people found a levels tougher than their degree, I can imagine this was a lecturer at one of these Mickey Mouse courses at a Mickey Mouse institution, trying to justify his position.
Further education now is far more about massaging unemployment figures.

No it wasnt a mickey mouse course at a mickey mouse institution. My uncle also told me the same and he has 5 A-levels and 16 O levels and went to Oxford. Also on a sidenote in depends when the person did the A-levels as standards have dropped somewhat. Getting A-levels years ago was harder than it is now.

I def agree the standardisation of qualification now as dropped by alarming proportions.
Next we will even have boxers going to uni!

The standard hasn't dropped alarmingly, at least at some levels, though it is true to say there has been some grade inflation. Different things are assessed differently.
