Dangerous Don Lee vs Tony Sibson

Post by zuru »

This was a very good fight with several knockdowns for each fighter, when Lee sucked it up & stopped Sibson in the 8th(I think).Did anyone see it?The 6"2" southpaw Lee against the 5"8" fireplug Sibson

Yes - great fight. I still watch the tape now and then. Lee won 4 knock downs to 3.
Interviewed after the fight, Sibson calls the stoppage premature. I must have missed something.

Yeah, this was a classic... Sibson was really never quite the same fighter afterwards. Lee also had cracking fights with Doug Dewitt and Jeff Harding later on in his career.

I'm pretty sure Don Lee was down only twice (not 3 times)

Strange fight. Sibson scored a flash knockdown in the first, but Lee had the better of it the 2nd before flooring Sibson 3 times in the 3rd. Amazingly (if I remember, don't have the tape) Sibson than one the 4th and 5th rounds. Than Lee was down in the 8th and than Sibson to end it.

Seeing as I now live in Leicester I really should have more Sibson in my fight film collection.

The only fight I can recall watching of Don Lee was his fight with Micheal Watson. I seem to remember that it was a pretty even fight untill the fight was stopped due to Lee having a really bad cut in his mouth.

Fantastic fight. Sibbo always gave 100%. The fans got value for money.

As a converted southpaw he had a tremendous left hook.

How on earth did he make 160?

I have no idea. He was certainly one strong, stocky fighter.

When Sibbo was 'on' he was a serious fight for almost anyone.

Really nice guy as well I have been told.

Dangerous Don Lee had an even more unusual fight than his bout with Sibson. In 1989 he fought fringe contender Paul Whittaker. In the 3rd round (I could be off slightly) Lee dropped Whittaker twice and looked to be in for a short night when Whittaker floored him at the end the round. The next round, Lee appeared to be back on target for a KO after decking his opponent two more times, but once again Whittaker caught him near the end of the round and dropped Lee for a second time. After that the bout got ugly and ended with Lee being DQ'd in the 6th.

I had Lee pegged for big things until Michael Olajide (another fighter I was disappointed by) exposed his lack of defense.
