British Eurosport Commentary...WTF?

Atlas is boxings biggest bully and keyboard warrior. Really scummy trailer trash at heart pretending his dad was a doctor and that he himself is some genius psyciatrist. He didnt have the balls to fight a decent amateur career or fight as a pro yet ad nauseum he questions the courage and "character" of fighters every telecast and rambles on like a bully putting down fighters. Atlas is a well connected bum. and the way he hates on tyson on those espn greatest heavyweights shows refusing to give tyson any credit as a fighter is just pathetic and shows Atlas is a biased partizan shameless excuse for a "journalist". Someone send him to journalism school so he learns about character himself and integrity

I don't think there's any serious dispute that his dad was a doctor. Tyson was a major creep to one of Atlas' relatives (he admitted as much), so I can understand the animosity. But I agree that he's too harsh on Tyson as a fighter as a result of that. And yeah, he goes overboard with the psychoanalysis sometimes, too.

Have you seen footage of a 15 year old Tyson? You would not want him fooling with a 40 year old hooker, let alone a 13 year old girl.

I think the story goes that he grabbed her ass without her consent, which isn't okay regardless of age. Plus it's not like you'd have wanted your young daughter messing around with Tyson- who had basically been liberataed from juvy by D'Amato not long before that- under the best of circumstances.

I'm not going to argue that Teddy isn't an at least occasional hothead to a criminal degree, but I'm just saying his visceral dislike of Tyson isn't totally without justification. I doubt any of us would be willing to discuss him on TV without slipping a jab in here and there, had our personal experience with him been what Atlas's was.

Don't watch much boxing on Eurosport, but from other sport's I've watched on the channel, the commentary in pretty much all sports can be pretty grim.

From what I have seen though, the boxing commentary isn't an exception. I remember watching a fight live a few years back. Can't remember who, I think it was Michael Sprott vs Somebody. But it's been a while. Anyway, whoever it was it must have been pretty soon after Christmas. There was one commentator, doing the job on his own. And I swear to God, the guy spent a good couple of rounds thanking everybody he'd ever met for the Christmas cards he'd received. It was ridiculous. A fight is going on, and this clown is going; "I got one off my flatmate. Er.. Who else? Oh the one from Aunt Sally was lovely. I'm not sure if she'll be watching, but thank you Sally. Nice right jab there. Oh, and this lovely couple I met when I was on holiday in Teneriffe wrote, which I thought was nice....."

I saw the same guy commentating on the David Tua vs Talmadge Griffis fight back in the day. It wasn't live, it was on like a month after the fight happened. I still remember this guys amateur hour commentary. Tua had some weird pair of shorts on, with a flap that was on the front, but not the back. Anyway this guy was obsessed by them. He kept going on about; "Tua looks like he's in a skirt. Don't you think it looks like a skirt?" <doh> Another pearl of wisdom of some guy on the undercard's losing record; "This guy has had 23 fights, and he's lost 15 of them.... He's not very good, is he?"

About this time last year I was watching a fight. I didn't know who the guy was, but apparently he lived near me, so I thought I'd whack it on. Anyway, they had Richie Woodhall on. A guy who does boxing commentary for a few different channels. Now whoever he was commentating with was his biggest fan. Every sentence the guy uttered ended with the words; "Don't you think, Richie?" One more than one occasion, the guy even said; "I don't know much about this boxer/gym. You're the expert Richie, what do you think?" They may as well just have had Richie Woodhall on his own.


So, in answer to your question, no. The boxing commentators aren't great on Eurosport. They are memorable though.

This doesn't have anything to do with Eurosport, but I just got done watching a FuelTV rebroadcast of a Fox Deportes Golden Boy Card, and I can't help but tip my cap to the delightful awfulness that is Chris "Nice Combination" Rose and Brian "Nice Combination" Stann. If you did a drinking game based on the times these guys yell "ooh! Nice combination!," you'd be sloshed inside a round. They couldn't care less if anything lands or not. They appreciate combinations for what they are, not what they do. But my favorite part might be when they pretend that they're at ringside, even when they open the broadcast with a brief studio shot.

But I digress. Sometimes they do vary their commentary. Occasionally they'll say "good combination" instead of "nice combination."

On reading this thread a bit more thoroughly, the guy who was bumming Richie Woodhall certainly sounds like the Steve Holdsworth guy you mentioned. The other stuff might have been him as well.

I watch a lot of snooker on Eurosport, and the commentary can be a bit duff on that as well. But it comes across as better, because the people who discuss it make up for their obvious lack of knowledge with some enthusiasm for the sport. When I have heard boxing on Eurosport, the commentators have sounded like they just got some bloke from down the pub who volunteered to do it for a free pie.

Eurosport do that for a lot of their sports as well. The cameraman will cut to something that isn't anything to do with the game, and the commentators flounder and come up with an excuse why they aren't telling you what's happening live.
