Micky Ward Film

Post by bigznyc »

watch it the other night and wtf are they talking about when saying he fought for a world title? I know its a movie but comon, I thought this was a true story. Do you think the family really considered him a world champion cause he beat a british local fighter for wbu title? They acted like he beat Floyd Mayweather for undisputed title. I didnt get that..he wn some fight and the guy comes in locker and says he is getting a tite shot. Then they have him go to england to fight a guy nobody heard of. Also, did HBO really televise micky ward and some brit? Really

Yes, they televised it on the Hamed/Bungu undercard.
And Ward did fight for a major title--v. Vince Phillips.
And Ward's retired; this belongs in BOTP.

Great film. They left out a bit regarding his path to the title, but oh well. It's a movie, what are ya gonna do?

I know more about boxing than anyone on this forum...they say title shot and then show this garbage fight against a british club fighter..then they hype it up as world title! The world title match was Phillips and no mention in film. Dick

You've shown nothing to indicate your knowledge. Read your first sentence. Ward did fight for a world title. You got called out on it (and not just by yours truly, either).

I'd love to see him take on Mr. Hascup, Controversial, Bundana, etc.
That would be brutal.

I really can't believe they didn't include something about the Gatti fights in the movie. As far as his Boxing career goes, that's defnitely what he'll be remembered for most without any doubt, title or no title.

Personally I thought it was a great film with wonderful performances. Though I did, have an issue that they referred to the WBU title as THE World title and that Mark Wahlberg didn't go blonde, my biggest gripe was that they felt the need to make it Rocky style and represent Shea Neary as the cocky, arrogant and disrespectful villian to who we can all cheer when he gets knocked out! In reality, Neary was always fully respectful and affable. Plus the final fight showed the inevitable beating up of the hero before the rousing in between round speech before the comeback victory. In reality, Ward was pretty much in control throughout. So for history, not awesome but for theatre and film making, superb!
