Re: At least Hearn said it like it is
Id take the rematch but hopefully he does have another fight or 2 in the meantime. Dawson fights Stecenson in like June time doesn't he? So at the earliest he would make his next mandatory in like November/December, and it may be later than that if the Stevenson defence is a mandatory. I don't think this British title defence against Ajisafe would do him that much good with the greatest of respect. Tony needs a fight that's going to motivate and push him again so a European shot or defence of his Silver title would be the options I'd be looking at.
Re: At least Hearn said it like it is
in all respects to Bellew I think this may have come as a realisation check for him. facts are he lost to lost to Cleverly at home and some would say fortunate to get a draw again on home turf.
He seems to loose it mentially particulary come fight week over the top intense staring the drinking water at the scales etc, that coupled with the act of being a tough sod from Liverpool etc like in all professions as you go up the ladder one has to be a little bit more shrewd.
With the pull he has in his home town he has a massive platform to build a successfull career, However I think some timeaway from the city maybe travelling oversees wether it be boxing related or just experiencing other ways of life and cultures would make him a much more rounded individual and no doubt help his career long term.

He is as a Scouser, broadening his horizons would diminish his Boxing ability. Everyone knows Sousers are by far the toughest people in the World and are " a different breed". They are that scary, Chilemba, who has encountered REAL hardship could not possibly cope with about 7-8000 cheering against him (which they hardly did after first few rounds), could he?Daveyswan wrote:in all respects to Bellew I think this may have come as a realisation check for him. facts are he lost to lost to Cleverly at home and some would say fortunate to get a draw again on home turf.

Indeed mickey1975 - perhaps instead of referring to cleverley as the "boy from the valleys" his mind set should have been this lad from the valleys has been studing for a pure mathematics degree in addition to boxing and winning serious titles, maybe just maybe the boy from the valleys is mentially and physically a tough mofo.....

Scousers are world class complainers. It's all whinge and no trousers.
You have to remember that scousers have had it tougher than any other people in the UK. They are special and it's only their immensely funny sense of humour that keeps them going.
A lot of disrespect shown to chilemmba after the fight. Not on at all really. CHilemmba has seen more hard times than a dozen scousers who's shellsuits have been nicked.

Agreed although I must say the smith brothers and Derry Matthews seem much more rounded individuals, nothing wrong with being proud of your roots but at the same time its important to learn and look outside the box.
Re: At least Hearn said it like it is
He does seem to expend an enormous amount of emotional energy both before and during the fight. Look at the number of times he did something at the end of the round - glared, threw a late punch, had words, etc - surely it would benefit him if he was to focus purely on the boxing while actually in the ring. His heightened state of emotional unrest will have distracted from any game plans, strategy and advice his corner was trying to convey and the emotional workout will also have taken a physical toll. He definitely seems to be someone who would benefit from the presence of a sports psychologist.
Re: At least Hearn said it like it is
The bare facts are that (yet) Bellew isn't ready for the top guys in the division. He's a very good fighter at his level which right now is European level, and on the fringes of the top 10 in the World. He's been beaten of Cleverley who is about 5th best at LH and now has a draw with Chilemba.
Group that together with the knockdowns and struggles against domestic fighters like Ajisafe and McKenzie shows that Bellew is not yet a world class fighter.
No shame in that at all, and I hope he does prove to be so in the future.
A Sports Pyschologist can't give him the tools that right now aren't there.

Very true. Derry seems very mentally strong, the guy has some heart.

Tony was always well thought of on here...he seems to be taking some kind of a backlash at the moment.

It does not mean we don't like him if we think he got beat.milpool wrote:Tony was always well thought of on here...he seems to be taking some kind of a backlash at the moment.

Well said; I imagine he feels disappointed and hope he doesn't stay away too long.mickey1975 wrote:It does not mean we don't like him if we think he got beat.milpool wrote:Tony was always well thought of on here...he seems to be taking some kind of a backlash at the moment.

you would have to be a pretty big cheerleader of his not to recognize that he was disrespectingMachoMan09 wrote: Whilst there are a handful of exceptions, for the most part I think the criticism is coming from people who do like him and want him to do well. his opponent during the fight and after. for the average guy watching it, he was playing the part
of a villain, which a lot of boxers do successfully to add drama and all that. there shouldn't be
any surprise that people watching the fight, not sitting in his cheering section, didn't appreciate
the antics. he didn't do as well as he apparently thought he did, and his personality wasn't enchanting,
but it's not the end of the world. fighting for british and euro and international titles is a very high level
and if he learns from his mistakes he will earn another shot at a world title.
Re: At least Hearn said it like it is
Personally I don't think people are giving Chilemba enough credit - Chilemba was very smart as he managed to get under Bellew's skin a few times and put him off his game plan whilst remaining in control and boxing well.

As a highly ranked boxer should.JayMc wrote:Personally I don't think people are giving Chilemba enough credit - Chilemba was very smart as he managed to get under Bellew's skin a few times and put him off his game plan whilst remaining in control and boxing well.
Re: At least Hearn said it like it is
At least he's fighting good opposition, in comparison to some at the weight. Bellew is passionate and I love that but I see it does affect him when fight night gets close. He's proud of his roots which is great, and I don't think there is a more determined boxer out there. I like Tony, or Anthony, as many of this forum were calling him when hanging out of his anus (while he was on here, of course).mickey1975 wrote:As a highly ranked boxer should.JayMc wrote:Personally I don't think people are giving Chilemba enough credit - Chilemba was very smart as he managed to get under Bellew's skin a few times and put him off his game plan whilst remaining in control and boxing well.
Re: At least Hearn said it like it is
I like how he is on here - he seems very honest and seems to enjoy the forum. He does get hyped though before a bout and threatens all sorts and he didn't ought to; some of the most lethal hitters in boxing don't go so far. That Chilemba really knew his stuff and did not do what Bellew would have wanted. He'll maybe be better for the draw when the disappointment goes.

I was not having a go at Tony, just stating a boxer fighting in a final eliminator should be competent!JamesH wrote:At least he's fighting good opposition, in comparison to some at the weight.
