Sugar Ray Seales.

Post by KOJOE90 »

Anyone here ever see him fight? What was this former contenders style and how good was he?

He was a Olympic Gold medal winner in 1972 at Light-Welterweight and won a number of other amateur titles.

But as a professional never rose above contender status. I seem to recall that towards the end of his career he only passed the eye sight tests as he knew the eye chart off by heart.

Any thoughts, memorys or general information on this forgotten Middleweight contender? :box: :box: :box:

I certainly don't think of him as forgotten. His greatest error was in taking on the "sugar" name which was just a skosh big for him. USBA and NABF title holder. I thought he got lots of media attention but was just a shade under the performance level one expects from a sugar.

He choked in the clutch more than once. He had an overall successfull career in my estimation. I saw him fight live in Seattle agains Mike Nixon in a very entertaining fight that went the distance and if my memory serves me he won in a decision. I now have to look at the record to be sure my memory serves.

I was looking over his record he fought some pretty decent fighters but never beat any of them, he fought Hagler 3 times and the closest he got to winning was a draw. You dont hear too much about the guy

In a 1980 fight with Jaime Thomas, Seales was thumbed in the eye, tearing his retina, and he gradualy went blind. Seales retired in 1983, and currently works with autistic students at Lincoln High School in Tacoma.
