Bruno was always in good condition, world class puncher, very good jab. His nerves and hence stamina often let him down though, but Big Frank always gave it 100%.darkstar81 wrote:im too young to really remember. shame about his voice! he was always a figure of fun but he got in there with tyson twice so he has my respect
He gave a near peak Lennox Lewis a VERY tough fight.

He never gave 100% in the 2nd Tyson fight.KOJOE90 wrote:Bruno was always in good condition, world class puncher, very good jab. Yeah, he pushed Lewis early on but once Lewis landed flush Bruno was gone.

like barry mac said last night," when bruno got tagged, instead of covering up,holding on or move away,he dropped his hands and stuck his chin out". as for the 2nd tyson fight,if nigel benn got the shits walking with frank holding the flags imagine what frank was going throughCollins2000 wrote:He never gave 100% in the 2nd Tyson fight.KOJOE90 wrote:Bruno was always in good condition, world class puncher, very good jab. I did like Benns contribution last night, at least he was honest to say he felt Intimidated at the 2nd Tyson fight. So what did it feel like to be Bruno, i think maybe the feeling that he could let everyone down got to him as well as the thought of facing Tyson.
Bruno always trained to be in top condition, one of my favourite memorys of boxing is when he won the title, hopefully he can keep himself together and enjoy his retirment.

I remeber listening to that on radio at a house party in Preston. I had my ear next to the radio all fight but for the last couple of rounds the music went off, the girls were ignored (and pissed off) and then the whole place went nuts.nickd wrote:I really enjoyed it, brought back so many memories. Him holding on against McCall in the last couple of rounds I can remember willing him to stay up.
Very strange performance by McCall, he did absolutely nothing for the first 9-10 rounds I think he banked on being able to get a stoppage at the end. Or he was off his face on crack who knows.Coconut wrote:I remeber listening to that on radio at a house party in Preston. I was at a party when the fight was on, at the start of the fight there was about 5 of us watching it, by the end everyone at the party was shouting at the TV willing Bruno to hold on, we all went nuts at the end.
And if my memory is right i got my end away by the end of the party, not a bad night out

I was on a night shift when Bruno beat McCall. At the time we used radio receivers to receive the weather charts I needed, but they could be tuned to Radio Five. Not many weather charts got received that evening. Ha Ha. My current employers would probably give me the bullet for this kind of thing now!!!
I'd never seen Bruno getting staggered by Jumbo Cummings before - lucky that was at the end of the round. I'd also forgotten about the Uncle Tom stuff, which was very sad IMO.
I didn't think the level of Bruno's competition was that bad really either as it happens...I mean, he won the European title. I thought it was a shame he didn't fight for the British title - surely the leading British contenders at the time would have been of an acceptable standard for Bruno.

Bruno did beat some good men Eklund, Coetzee, Coetzer, Williams, Ferguson and McCall.dandantheweatherman wrote: I didn't think the level of Bruno's competition was that bad really either as it happens...I mean, he won the European title. Unfortunatly he also faced some hopelessly outclassed people like John Emmen and Chuck Gardner, it didn't help Bruno that these mismatches were televised on prime time TV.

Underrated fighter Bruno, had good boxing skills especially his jab which was phenomenal, but his stamina problems always got to him in the end.
His punch power was nothing short of promethean, and had he been a bit more fluid he would have been a really devastating fighter, but his lack of combination punching made it easier for the top class fighters he faced to weather the storm.
Why he didn't learn to hold and grab before the McCall fight is totally beyond me, because he sure grappled and clung on for dear life in those last three rounds.
I always suspected that McCall was instructed to hold back in that fight, it won't be a popular theory, but I always suspected that King was keen on McCall losing and probably paid him well not to try too hard, certainly he did bugger all for most of the fight. There was a lot more money in Tyson fighting Bruno than fighting McCall for Don King.
This isn't meant as a knock on Frank in any way shape or form.
Thought allegedly came across pretty well in that documentary, seemed to have genuine respect and care for Bruno. I laughed at that bit where he went, 'fornicate off Frank, maybe you're fornicating mad.'

Did you blow your load early like Frank?topper123 wrote:I was at a party when the fight was on, at the start of the fight there was about 5 of us watching it, by the end everyone at the party was shouting at the TV willing Bruno to hold on, we all went nuts at the end.
