Johnny du Plooy RIP

Post by Old bones Ian »

Another heavy gone before his time.

He had talent and boxed for the WBO title, but Johnny didn't like training. One story is of Du Plooy, Corrie Sanders and Pierre Coetzer on a trip to America. In the morning Sanders set out on his roadwork run he passed Coetzer who was doing runs also. Then Sanders ran past the beach where Du Plooy was flying a kite and getting his trainer to run after it when it fell.

Snipes exposed him in the States where Main Events were pushing him. I seem to remember old man Weaver giving him too much trouble over the course of a couple of fights. Nevertheless, he kept his nose clean after retirement and this is another sad death.

Thats right Bennie, if i remember correctly the 1st Weaver fight he just punched himself out, and because of the bad training had nothing left and retired with a broken hand.
Du Plooy gained revenge in the 2nd fight, with a good countout KO in the 2nd round
