Christ! DuPlooy as well??

Sounded like a wild, fight loving character in his Boxing Illustrated interview, round the time he lost to Snipes.

He came out swinging very hard, bit like an orthodox Corrie Sanders, could be KOd - although he seemed to give up rather than be genuinely knocked out - and made for some very exciting fights. Lost in the deep talent pool he competed in, but wow he would be fun to have around today.

Only a few of Johnny du Plooy's bouts were televised.
Here is Johnny du Plooy vs. Mike Weaver II.

What did he die of? Must have been fairly young.

Du Plooy had a good punch but was not the most athletic guy and although he had a long AM career really wasn't that skilled of a boxer. Also had the trademark South African stamina problem. But he was in a lot of fun fights and was a top 10 contender at one point in the late 80s. RIP.

There were many DuPlooy fights televised. I have a ton of them on tape. Tillis, Bey, Pritchard, Weaver 1 and 2 et al, Snipes broadcast in the US, all these just off the top of my head. Obviously that poor run vs Damiani, Coetzer and Sanders (I say poor - he came out blasting in all of them to his credit)

He's not as well known as he should have been I guess. Definitely a tough era to prosper in.

I've read it was heart trouble.

Hmm... bit rascist. There's been a few heavies who could have trained harder, but it's hardly a genetic weakness in all South African boxers! Lol

I was answering the question about what he died of: heart issues.

I guessing from your strident defense of Corrie Sanders poleteddy that you are South African.

Not sure if you were joking or not, but all of the notable South African HWs of the past 30 years had notable stamina issues (Coatzee, Sanders, Botha, DuPlooy) Not sure why, but it just seems to be the trend. Certainly nothing "racial" about it. Heck, the lone black South African HW of any note was Courage Tshabalaba, and he had awful stamina too!

Botha doesn't have terrible stamina. Even as a middle-aged, overweight boxer he can still do 12 rounds.

Doing 12 didn't work out well for him the last time he tried it.
And he's gone 12 in the last few years against mediocre comp.

Johnny Du Plooy passed away 3 weeks ago?

Post by Jaywheel »

How could I have missed that?

Johnny du Plooy one of South Africa’s most charismatic and exciting fighters died in Primrose on the East Rand on Friday morning after suffering from heart problems in recent years. He was 48...

...a journalist once wrote “Physically he has all the macho requirements of a matinee idle. Yet beneath the handsome, sun-tanned exterior bristles an untamed, spit in your face product as rough and resolute as the hard-bitten Ellis Park suburb from which he sprung.”

Du Plooy, a very very good heavy from the 80's and 90's, had a career defining KO win against ring legend Mike Weaver, who was still in his prime. He then suffered hardly fought at decent rates defeats to soon to be considered ATG WBO champs Damiani and most famously, the Stamina Sniper.

Mike Weaver was nowhere near his prime when he beat Johnny DuPlooy, let alone when he lost to him. Still, a very nice KO for JP.

If you want to see a really scary KO, I have no idea if it's on YouTube, see DuPlooy lay out James Broad in horrorshow fashion.

It should be pointed out that Broad is 6'5'' and 260lb and DuPlooy is 'only' about 200lb, so probably Broad took a dive because it is well documented on Boxers of the Past that anyone 200lb cannot punch, is 'small', 'feeble' and 'fly-like'.

You seem to have omitted Pierre Coetzer in your analysis.

And as mentioned, Botha had lots of issues, but stamina wasn't one of them.

Du Plooy, at 6'3", weighed 212 for the Broad fight, and he could punch, so highly doubt it was a "dive". ( I know you're kidding  )

It sounds like you have some of the more esoteric fight footage.

Maybe a good idea to upload it on youtube? :TU:
