Howard Eastman
Forgive me if this has been discussed before but I am a newbie!
I was just looking at the upcoming great shows and saw that Eastman is fighting soon. I then had a look back through his record and was actually gutted that he didn't retire about 5 years ago. His fight against Joppy on the undercard of the Lewis Rahman II fight was one that got me hooked when I was just a wee lad and I couldn't believe he didn't win that fight. He seemed made of iron and to see some of the fighters he has lost to is quite depressing really. It's a shame that there isn't the money there unless you are a really top drawer fighter as Eastman should be able to retire comfortably after a long, hard career I think. It brought it home to me too reading an earlier post about Rendall Munroe trying to get his job back on the bins, could you ever imagine a premier league footballer trying to get a job like this less than 6 months after retiring? A long post I know so apologies but just sharing my thoughts!

Re: Howard Eastman
He's a bit of a looney from what I've read. He lives in Ghana and keeps fighting near novices and losing. Just too old for the game. Basically a slower, beatable version of Howard with limited power. I think he gets himself into a bit of trouble with the law. Smokes too much weed and generally refuses to grow up.

Not these days but the former FA Cup Winner Mickey Gynn is a postie these days. The large majority of that team have normal jobs nowsmackdowngunny wrote:Forgive me if this has been discussed before but I am a newbie!

How do we know he gets in trouble with the law and smokes too much weed? Or are we making assumptions....polecateddy wrote:He's a bit of a looney from what I've read. Lots of fighters 'need' to retire. Lots still need to earn money and this, for most, is the best and only way to do so.
Re: Howard Eastman
I remember watching his fight John Duddy on BBC Ireland a few years back. (As I recall, it was on the same night as Hatton vs Floyd.) That loss should have signalled his retirement.

There's no money in boxing. Rios-Alvarado 2, a blockbuster HBO fight; only had about 4,500 attend. The live gate was only about $500,000. So you can imagine at lower levels what the live gate brings in.
The purse for Peterson-Holt, a world title fight on TV, was $50,000. That's split between them.
I remember when Hayemaker made a bid for a British featherweight title fight; I think the champion got a record purse of £60k. That is excellent money for a British title fight. However, take away training expenses, tax, trainers fee, promoters fee, managers fee and he might only see 25k from that 60k. Then say he gets injured and that is the only fight he has that year. 25k/year and that's from a "good" purse. That is fornicate-all, especially considering they are putting their health and very lives on the line.

Re: Howard Eastman
Yeah that fight was Paul Appleby Vs Martin Lindsay, not sure about now but at the time it was the biggest purse for a british title fight ever.
Also agree with all what you sid in the rest of the thread.
Lad I know boxed at a decent level, Midland area champion etc, loved boxing but it was actually losing him money (due to time off work, travel expenses etc)

I thought he were a Rastafarian and a proper one at that, not just an excuse to smoke dope.polecateddy wrote:He's a bit of a looney from what I've read. Re: Howard Eastman
Eastman really should have retired after the loss to Duddy - that truly was the end of the line. Given what happened to his brother Gilbert, you'd think he would be wise enough to look for another way to earn money. Also, I would have thought the Hopkins, Joppy and Abraham paydays would go far in Guyana?
As an aside, I have been face to face with the Battersea Bomber after one of his fights, he was all long lean muscle and crazed eyes. Totally friendly to me, but definitely something a bit freakish and ghostly about the man.

Re: Howard Eastman
Weren't he homeless for quite a while while he was boxing amateur? Am sure he had some sort of spiritual happening but may have been drugs? He was a very good boxer and powerful, if he still want's to do it and he's not showing himself up/getting battered what's to do?loaded_gloves wrote:Eastman really should have retired after the loss to Duddy - that truly was the end of the line. I thought he won the Duddy fight, personally.

Re: Howard Eastman
Yep he used to sleep on the northern line in his teenage years.
And you could argue he is showing himself up, given that he is routinely losing to novices. His brother Gilbert suffered a brain injury in a bout.

Re: Howard Eastman
What else can he do? Does he have skills or qualifications that can make him employable in Guyana? Does he have savings or capital or property? If not his options are limited; he was a skilled boxer and if he is losing to novices, is he getting beaten up? What can the man do? He has made boxing his trade and invested over 20 years of his life to it.

Re: Howard Eastman
I heard he built a hospital in Guyana.
When the money dries up (if it has) he should be supported outside of the ring in my opinion. A job in the hospital for a start.

Erm the being in jail since 2010 for the possession of cannabis would be fairly damning, albeit not proof that he smokes it I suppose

He should have committed more and beaten Joppy. It would have been the making of him if he'd kept away from Hopkins.

I see that as well, it must be wrong as his opponent is also a middleweight weight as well...
Re: Howard Eastman
He was good to watch in his prime, loved his little pause/shuffle when he knocked someone down ! Legend
Re: Howard Eastman
I thought that, but his opponent's last fighting weight was just over the Welter limit though.Londonirish wrote:grub wrote:Eastman's next fight is listed as being for a WBC regional belt...at Welterweight!

Re: Howard Eastman
anyone can get outhussled in a 4 rounder but the other recent losses are not
to bad fighters. he may beat this next guy. just because someone else got
hurt boxing, related or not, doesn't mean a guy shouldn't box if he wants to.
he's just not the same guy in his 40's so he needs to make a few adjustments.
maybe he's doing it for the money but maybe he isn't. who really boxes for
the money?
