Muhammad Ali v Trevor Berbick
Muhammad Ali v Trevor Berbick
I watched this over the weekend and had Berbick win by 5 rounds to four with one even. The official scorecards scored it a lot wider; 97-94 and 99-94 twice.
Anyone else watched this and have an opinion on the scoring?

8 Rounds for Berbick, one even and one for Ali. You could well make a case for a shutout, Ali had nothing left.

Re: Muhammad Ali v Trevor Berbick
I haven't watched this fight in a LONG time and have no desire to do so again, but I don't remember anything other than Berbick winning just about every round. The only positive for Ali was that he wasn't completely trashed like he was in the Holmes fight.
Re: Muhammad Ali v Trevor Berbick
I might watch it again and see if I score it any differently. The post fight interview with Ali was pretty sad, he sounded so old and frail, why did they allow him to fight?!

And ended up getting a few teeth knocked out in a hotel room as a result, if I'm not mistaken...Il Duce wrote:That fight was called,

Don King attempted to get the bout halted, because he had an 'Option' on Trevor Berbick.
Re: Muhammad Ali v Trevor Berbick
Don King was a such a thief man. Anyway, about the fight I saw Holmes vs Ali unfortunately, I never want to see that version of Ali again. So I have no interest in seeing him in with Berbick. I can't see the Ali of the Holmes fight beating anybody of any note at all. Hell I'm sure he would've lost to a lot of complete unknowns at that time in his career.
Re: Muhammad Ali v Trevor Berbick
9 rounds berbick 1 even cant get it any closer, being as generous as possible

Re: Muhammad Ali v Trevor Berbick
Ali was much better and stronger in the Berbick bout than he was versus Holmes where he was weight drained.
That he was bashed about for 10 rds by someone as brutish as Berbick is horrifying but, in a way, remarkable. Ali, even in the early stages of illness, was inhumanly tough.

9-1 Berbick. The 5th round is the only one you can reasonably score for Ali.milpool wrote:I watched this over the weekend and had Berbick win by 5 rounds to four with one even. The official scorecards scored it a lot wider; 97-94 and 99-94 twice.

I don't think there was a price to see the bout.Il Duce wrote:Does anyone rememeber the price to see that bout.
I'm pretty sure it was $24.95 or thereabouts.
Muhammad Ali was pathetic, and fat.
After the bout, he used his weight and lack-of-training as an exscuse.
Stating that if he had trained and came in at 222 lbs, he would have won.
He actually wanted a rematch, by stating that if they gave him the proper amount of
time to train, he would have won.
Re: Muhammad Ali v Trevor Berbick
The Earnie Shavers vs Jeff Simms preliminary was pretty good.
Don King tricked Earnie phoned him up and asked him if he like a quick payday by fighting
"somebodys grandma",
Shavers didn't know who it was till he arrived in the Bahamas a few days later.
also because no one bothered to bring a real boxing bell, a big cow bell was used to begin and end the rounds because

As usual, Ali 'flopped'? Did Muhammad Ali usually flop in his fights? What?Il Duce wrote:As usual, Muhammad Ali 'flopped'. He had nothing left after the 1st Round.
In typical Muhammad Ali 'fashion', he was hoping the Judges would save another bout for him..........
'Hoping the judges would save another bout for him'? Was he? How do you know that?
To these eyes it was a gutsy effort from a totally shot 40 year old man quite heroically battling a brute in his 20s.
You seem to have a distaste for Ali. Liston twice, Patterson twice, Chuvalo twice, Quarry twice, Bonavena, Frazier three times, Ellis, Norton three times, Foreman, Lyle, Shavers, Spinks twice among numerous others. Who on earth does impress you?
Who the hell do you like?

I didn't think it was televised at all.Il Duce wrote:Saad Off The Deck,

I remember not wanting to pay to see another pathetic Muhammad Ali bout, "Rip-Off-The-Public-Again'.
The bout was originally scheduled for Saturday Night, December 5th.
But the date was changed to Friday Night, December 11th, as there was a better opportunity for a larger
Closed Circuit purchase, as there was too much Free Television competition from College Sports Programming.

I meant in the states. It wasn't where I lived, but that was in a small town near Boston and even at 11 years old I knew Ali was finished. I've seen it as well, I don't offer up cards on fights I don't watch.Adamj1987 wrote:Yeah i have a copy of the thai(i think) broadcastSaadOffTheDeck wrote:I didn't think it was televised at all.Il Duce wrote:Saad Off The Deck,

If he wasn't there to try win, why on earth did he stay in there for 10 violent rounds?Il Duce wrote:Mr. Loaded Gloves,
Do you honestly believe that Muhammad Ali should have been in the ring that night,,,,,,,
He was not in-shape, and it was an utter 'rip-off'.
He took $1,100,000 for that bout,,,,,,,
The Drama in Bahama.........should have been called 'Nausea in Nassua'.
Lets stay with the facts,,,,,,,,December 1981.
Don't bring up 'tired and old' history.
For fun?
No I don't believe he should have been in the ring, but how many heavyweight champions have retired at a sensible time? You can count them on one hand.
Ali was no different to the rest and he was obviously sincere in believing he could win the fight.

Re: Muhammad Ali v Trevor Berbick
5-4-1 is pretty reasonable. Though 97-94 is actually only 1 round going to Berbick than to Ali. Horrible fight. Ali would occasionally land a little flurry or a jab. However, Berbick was not doing much more. There were several close rounds; which on this forum automatically goes to the other guy with many people on this forum. Anyway, it was a little closer than the judges had it, but in the grand scheme of things not that important.milpool wrote:I watched this over the weekend and had Berbick win by 5 rounds to four with one even.
