Saw in the latest Ring Magazine that Little Red Lopez was rated by a boxing scribe as one of boxing's top 10 greatest Mexican American fighters ever.
Another article in the same issue noted that he was a major part of the big west coast Mexican American fight scene in the 1970s.
Before reading these articles I never thought of Lopez as Mexican American. All I had ever heard was that he was Ute Indian along with brother Ernie.
Outside of his surname, there was nothing to really link him to Mex-Am heritage.
I don't believe he ever spoke Spanish, although it's true that some Mexican Americans don't. His pale skin and red hair, gave him an Irish look, almost an early version of Canelo Alvarez.
Does anyone know if Danny was legitimately Mex-Am or is it a stetch by the Ring writers to refer to him as that?

Re: Danny Lopez--Mexican-American?
I'm not sure if he has any Mexican heritage. A lot of people probably assume he's Mexican because of his last name and that a majority of his fights were in the LA area.
Re: Danny Lopez--Mexican-American?
I have heard that he does have Mexican blood in him, have much? I don't know.

From Wikipedia
Lopez is of Ute Indian, Mexican, and Irish heritage. He had been moved from one foster home to another, and coming off a Ute Indian Reservation in Utah, he finally found a home in Southern California. .[1] He is also the brother of welterweight contender Ernie Lopez. He is married to Bonnie Lopez and has three sons, Bronson, Jeremy, and Dylan.

kiki, you hardly needed to cite a source.. Your word alone would have sufficed.
My guess? The big Wiki checks with you for some of these facts...lol.

Gathering from my own experience on this board, it seems to be considered a negative to look at any source material before posting.
