WBC World Cup
I keep hearing about this WBC World Cup. But it never seems to happen. Manuel Charr is talking about it like it is a done deal and about to take place. I think Nick Blackwell is confirmed to be in it as well.
Anyone know any dates/details?

Re: WBC World Cup
Got this from another part of the forum:
Its all a bit vauge at the moment, the format involves 48 boxers in 4 weight divisions, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight and heavyweight.
Or they are talking about having it across 8 weight divisions, which would give it even more boxers.
And all the money raised from these promotions goes to the retired boxers fund, of course this will be after expenses for the WBC are deducted (cough, cough) , and boxers purses.
It will run over 40 weeks, and this from that most honest of men Jose Sulaiman.
“We are going to have all of the champions of every Continental Federation meet each other, plus the WBC Silver champions and the WBC International champions. We intend to have the first fight for say, $40,000 for the winner and $20,000 for the loser – it’s just an example. The winner goes to the next round and then he will 50 and the loser 25, the winner will go on to make 60 and the loser 30. The final champion will make 250 or more. So it’s very, very interesting. We are offering this also to other promoters. It will be very good for boxers, promoters, and boxing. I believe that this is one of the greatest programs that the WBC has had in its 50 years. It is the opening to the world with authentic champions of the Continental Federations affiliated with the WBC"
So thats about as clear as mude then Jose. I expect this to last a short time before it all falls apart and we are left wondering where the money has gone.

Slowly piecing this thing together:
Apparently there is an eliminator round, quater final, semi final and then a final. Planned to start in July 2013 and finish in April 2014.

Money raised from the WBC World Cup goes to the retired boxers fund. I think that is a worthy cause myself.Craigyid14 wrote:Sounds sh1t.

I think it's a worthy cause as well, doesn't stop the concept of the tournament sounding sh1t though. What would winning the world cup actually mean? In other sports it means your the world champions, in boxing terms it would mean absolutely nothing. What about unification clauses in contracts to have one world champion? That sounds a better concept.

Most titles are bs now and one champion will never happen again. So we can hope but it just won't be happening.Craigyid14 wrote:I think it's a worthy cause as well, doesn't stop the concept of the tournament sounding sh1t though. What I see this World Cup thing providing us with is some better matched fights than we are getting now. Plus a good cause makes a buck as well. All positive in my view.

According to Sulaiman there is some decent coin to be made for fringe fighters:
"We are going to have all of the champions of every Continental Federation meet each other, plus the WBC Silver champions and the WBC International champions. Re: WBC World Cup
Reslly! I can't stomach this sort of negativity whem it comes to getting fightets of equal calliber fighting each other regularly and getting paid resonably for it. So youthink that the national champions of a group of strong countries in exciting weight divisions are fighting each other in a knockout comp. with good incentives to win sounds shit? What, as a boxing fan, would make you happy then?Craigyid14 wrote:Sounds sh1t.
Re: WBC World Cup
Agree totally, fighters need all the encouragement in the world to get in the ring with each other, no better way than $ being the best incentive
Re: WBC World Cup
WBC World Cup. Another sanction $$$$ con

Re: WBC World Cup
I think the last thing we need is more world champions. As a boxing fan champions fighting champions would make me happy if this sh1t tournament takes off will we then have a WBA world cup? WBO? IBA etc etc. I can't stomach naivety. Do you really think boxing needs more champions? Why can't matchmakers/promoters just make these fights happen? Super 6 was a good idea in theory and got some great fights happining but as a tournament it took too long and boxers were still dropping out left, right and centre. Good for you looking forward to this, personally like the WBC I think it sounds sh1t.dberry wrote:Reslly!
