HITTER WITTER READY TO STEP OVER LYNES

Junior Witter is determined to put on a special performance when he puts his European and Commonwealth titles on the line against Colin Lynes on Friday night.
The light-welterweight from Bradford returns to Sky Sports in what should be an entertaining domestic dust-up at the York Hall in Bethnal Green.

The 31-year-old admits he failed to fire on his last outing against Andreas Kotelnik when he was taken the distance by the Ukrainian before winning comfortably on points.

Now Witter, who is ranked as the No.1 challenger for Floyd Mayweather's WBC title, wants to turn on the style when he comes face-to-face with the current British champion.

"My last fight wasn't brilliant but I came through it," he said in an interview for skysports.com. "Now I want to remind everyone what Junior Witter is all about.

"He (Lynes) has everything to gain. I know he's the younger man, but I'm going to take him to school.

"I'll let him choose what fight he wants, whether he wants to box or whether he wants to fight, but whatever way he wants to go, I will beat him."

With a 17-fight unbeaten streak to his name, a highly confident Witter is looking forward to the challenge of facing Lynes in front of the cameras.

However, 'The Hitter' is not underestimating his opponent, who has lost just once in his professional career, particularly with a world title shot likely in 2006 if he continues his winning run.

"I've watched a few of his fights and he's dangerous," he admitted."He's underestimated and has a good chin.

"He's aggressive and he wants to win, I've seen him get hurt and he digs deep because he wants to win."

One fight that doesn't appear to be on the horizon foir Witter is a showdown against Ricky Hatton, something the Yorkshireman has been talking about for many years.

Hatton is due to defend his IBF title against Carlos Maussa next month in his first fight since he claimed the belt from Kostya Tszyu back in April.

However, Witter is still hopeful he will get the chance to face the Mancunian in the ring to finally prove who his Britain's best light-welterweight, although he's not sure Hatton is as keen to take him on.

"There's still hope that we'll get it on," he said. "But he doesn't want it.

"If he wanted to do it, he could've done it this next fight, he doesn't have to fight Maussa, that's his choice.

"If I was him, I'd have picked me so he can prove to everybody how good he is and that he is the best in England."

Witter has been talking up Lynes so much this week you'd think he was a stiffer test than Hatton. But if he's on form, he'll probably liquidate Colin inside 4 rounds with little trouble.

Mayweather? Don't think it'll ever happen - Floyd's getting so much flack lately it'll likely be superfights only in 2006.

Still, with Warren, Witter's number one fan, out of the picture now maybe Hatton will take him on next year. He probably figures he can beat Junior in style, something I don't think Warren was too sure about.

I think Witter would be very dangerous for Hatton. He hits very hard and I can see Hatton ending up on his arse. However, if Ricky got through the first five or six rounds I could see him wearing down and stopping a tired Witter.

Yep I've always thought the same. Dangerous early, and too big a risk for SN to have ever considered the match seriously. But after midway it's Hatton all the way.

Would be a disaster for Witter if he came unstuck aginst Lynes

If Witter does come through this fight (which everyone expects him to do) then you'd have to say its been a very poitive year i.e. 2 wins against world ranked fighters & been ranked into the top 3 of every major organisation.

Lets hope 2006 can be the Witters year

A member of Team Hatton posted on their forum they will never give Witter a payday (when asked about Hattons next opponent before Maussa was announced). Team Hatton was as responsible for Hatton-Witter not happening as much as Warren if not more maybe?

I've always been of the mind that Hatton ceased to be interested in fighting Witter once he became a big noise and realised he didn't need him.

Only way I see Hatton fighting Witter would be if Hatton either wanted a unification and Witter had a belt, or Hatton lost a belt and Witter had one.

Joke fight, Lynes is past it and even at his peak Witter would have destroyed him. Witter will take him out as and when he wants to. Lynes has as much chance of winning as I do of shagging the Queen (That's THE Queen as oppose to A Queen - thought I would clarify just in case, cuts etc!)
