McNeil fails drug test

Colin McNeil has failed a drugs test, he recently fought for the commonwealth Light Middle losing on points to Ossie Duran, performing well in doing so.

he has now got to appear in front of the board to explain why he failed the test.

looks as if his fight against Gary Young will be off now.

To paraphrase yesterday's newspaper reports, McNeil has apparently plead guilty. After jibes from his friends saying how clean living he was, he apparently had a few puffs of cannibas, and, taking the Duran fight at short notice, he was caught out. His managment are hoping that the bbbc will be fairly leniant on McNeil as he, pardon the pun, has come clean.

the bbbc signs up to WADA (world anti-drugs agency) in January after which anyone failing a drugs test will be suspended for a minimum of 2 years

EDINBURGH'S Alex Arthur is hoping he can help to convince the British Boxing Board of Control to take a lenient view of Scottish light-middleweight Colin McNeil's failed drugs test.

The boxer, from Fauldhouse in West Lothian, became the first Scottish boxer to fail a drugs test following his Commonwealth title defeat by Ghanaian Ossie Duran last month.

He plans to plead guilty when he faces the Board of Control in November after admitting to smoking cannabis while on holiday in France.

He could face a fine and a two-year ban but Arthur, Edinburgh's European, British and Commonwealth super-featherweight champion, has vowed to speak up on McNeil's behalf.

Arthur said: "I am totally shocked by this.

"While I can't possibly know what Colin does for 24 hours of every day of his life I've travelled the world with him boxing internationally over a six-year period, sparred with him, shared hotel rooms with him and spent recreational periods with him.

"I definitely believe him when he claims that this incident was a one-off, so much so that I'd be willing to speak up on McNeil's behalf at next month's scheduled board meeting."

McNeil himself admitted he had foolishly accepted a cannabis joint while on holiday in France - to relieve pain from a troublesome training injury.

The former five-times Scottish welterweight champion said: "Nobody knows better than me that what I did was wrong but it was a foolish and isolated incident which I now bitterly regret it.

"Apart from the impact on my family, the local kids in the Fauldhouse Amateur Boxing Club look up to me as a hero and I've let them down.

"I am deeply ashamed for letting them and my family down so I am hoping the Board of Control will show me mercy."

Dear oh dear. That was a Sportsnetwork show wasn't it? That doesn't reflect very well on their organisation.

Very disappointing. They seem to have at least one a year, Montero and Oakey spring to mind. :(

About 28 days I think, he should have had some nosebag its untraceable after a day or 2

How can the Promoter be blamed for fighters taking drugs? Stupid fornicating comment if ever I heard one.

Tenner say's you will get sued for that comment

but I managed to stop myself....phew

Joking aside I'm starting to quite like allegedly, now that hes producing good fights and hes lost his obsession with the ABC's. I like the way he was trying to help BIG Frank in his time of need as well

So he had a smoke, what's the big deal? Not exactly a performance enhancing drug is it? More likely to dash out to the petrol station between rounds for a mars bar.
