According to Ritchie Giachetti,Holmes's trainer.
That was the fight that made Larry Holmes.
Holmes had broken the right thumb of the"Holmes Hammer" in the first round,
and by the Fifth he was in a lot of pain,
and a question if maybe he was to continue.
Giachetti then told Holmes in the corner, not to worry about his right hand, use the left overtime to win this fight.
(That and continue still punching with the outside of his knuckles with his right hand)
Holmes was out of action for nine months afterwards for the thumb to heal.
Holmes later would also break his right thumb in the Leon Spinks fight.
