Should these two records be combined?

For the most part they should be combined. It wouldn't suprise me that there would have been more than one Herman. We should probably start with the West Coast stuff, and see how the rest fits in with his travels.

And, I now recall reading somewhere that Jack Kearns had come to California hunting for talent, and took back with him to New York in the summer of 1921 Jimmy Darcy (Valley Trambitas):

This is the same time that Herman moved to the New York area, and the second Herman record (now "empty" after the transfer of bouts to the other Herman record) listed his manager as Kearns. So, it appears Kearns also brought back with him to NY Babe Herman as well. Anyone disagree?

Yes he signed Herman in January 1921. He also took Joe Benjamin, Jimmy Darcy (as you mentioned), Alex Trambitas, and Oakland Jimmy Duffy back east.

The record does look good.
