Boxers listed heights

How accurate do you think they are? The reason I ask is because ive watched so many fights where one fighter is listed at say 6'0 and another at say 5'11 and yet you can clearly see there's more than an inch difference! Anyway what are your thoughts?

Unless your officially measured at the Doctors which professional boxers should, then you don't have an official height, I always thought I was 6' 0" until I got measured and was 6' 1", I think the common problem with boxers stats changing is sometimes there measured in there boots and other times there not.

do you know what I mean though? You see a lot of fights where there's only supposed to a little bit of difference in height and there's a pretty big difference and then in other cases you see the guy listed as being the shorter man, being taller than the guy thats supposed to be the taller guy!

Amir Khan was listed as 5' 10" for many years and I tried getting it changed to 5' 9" to no avail. Now his height is listed as 5' 8½". I have no idea when it changed.

One that has always stuck with me for some reason is Paul Smith, he's listed as being 5'11 on here but whenver ive watched him im convinced he's shorter than that. I mean Groves is listed as being 5'11 1/2 I think and he looked a fair bit taller than Paul to me.

I thought Chisora was shorter than 6'1.5" for a while after seeing him stand a couple of inches shorter than (then listed) 6'2" Sam Sexton prior to the Magnificent 7 fight.

Turns out that Sam Sexton was taller than 6'2", and in fact he was listed as 6'4" for the Price fight, which he might be close to.

Seeing Chisora look roughly the same height as (6'3" listed... but probably only scraping 6'2") Haye, and then walking right past him at the Bellew/Miranda fight at Ally Pally confirmed to me that he is 6'1.5".

heights are always unreliable. the only time you can really tell is when both fighters weigh in and the do the face to face in their bare feet. even then its possible to slouch or stretch etc.

Gavin Rees had a good 3" boost from 5'4" to 5'7" for years. Wonder if it ever messed up sparring preparations for any of his opponents?

It's so difficult to tell until they are in the ring ...

In stare offs the smaller fighter often lifts their head upwards and stands bolt upright, while the bigger guy slouches.

Price vs Harrison is a classic example ... The difference didn't look as big as I thought it would be in the stare downs for a 6'8 guy vs a 6'4 & 1/2 guy.

In all honesty it looked like just an inch maximum between them!



In the ring though the size difference was as expected.

i think i noticed during those contender series how off the heights were,
often having the heights reversed

I think Audley's height in reality is bigger than it's listed. Also, if you look at any of the Haye/Aud head to head stuff, he absolutely towers over a man who is listed as only an inch or so smaller. So that sort of answers both questions. Lenny Lewis was/is consistently listed as 6'5" and Audley is taller than him.

I dunno... he was taller than Danny Williams, Chisora and Martin Rogan in the head to heads he's had with them. And looked roughly the same height as Larry Olubamiwo.

Looks like he just stands slightly below David Price's eyeline too, which would be about 5 inches. (6'8" - 5" = 6'3").

I was in Brockton in 2005 visiting Rocky Marciano's old haunts and in George's Cafe owned by the Tartaglia family I met an old guy who used to travel with Marciano when he fought locally in Providence Rhode Island. I asked him if he'd been fighting today could he have got up to 15sts instead of the 13 stones 8 lbs he usually fought at and still have been as effective. The old chap said he couldn't have fought at the higher weight because he was really only 5'9" and the extra weight would have slowed him down.

I can also say that I was standing with Mike Tyson when he weighed in at Glasgow in his bare feet and he was exactly 5' 10 and a half . He is sometimes listed as 6' and sometimes 5' 11" .

There's a picture of Rocky somewhere on some internet archive, it's from a weird angle so slightly obfuscated and not one of the usual shots you see of him. I swear if you didn't know it was him, you'd think it was a middleweight.

Haye ain't no 6:3 either

He's not far off. I saw him walk George Groves into the ring from fairly close up and went home telling people he was surprisingly little. Then I actually met Haye and I thought 6'3" wasn't unreasonable. I'm 5'8.5" so I couldn't tell you for sure, although I used to be quite autistic in being able to tell people how tall they were. Maybe he was wearing big soles or something?

Haye is also notorious for bending his knees for head to heads, so he is dwarfed completely.

Audley was noticeably taller than Lennox at the Haye weigh in. Audley was listing himself at 6'4.5" then. He is surely easily 6'6".

Wladamir has said in a couple of interviews he is 6'5".

I met Kevin Mitchell and John Thaxton and they were both tiny. I dunno how big John is supposed to be but Mitchell is supposed to be 5'8", right?

I've been saying for a while Tyson Fury is shorter than listed. When he was first listed as a pro he was on Boxrec at 6'7". Then they started listing him at 6'9". In that radio rage interview they question Steve Cunningham about how he said he didn't think Fury was 6'9" and looked more like 6'6" (then after the fight kept on banging on about him being a 6'9" giant). I mean, that's the first I heard of it. But it doesn't look like half a foot between them head to head. I just don't believe it.

The main one I remember was when Cotto fought Clottey, and Clottey was listed by Boxrec as 5'8" and Cotto as 5'7", and when they weighed in Clottey was shorter.

Price was definitely listed as 6'7 and Fury 6'8. Price had grown to 6'8.5 vs Sexton and Fury is now 6'9.

I guess that's what fame does for you!!!

At the end of the day, though with all the super big guys - who cares,?

Unless they are fighting each other they are always the big guy and have a massive size advantage. Fury is definitely at least a couple of inches taller than 6'6 Wlad from the photos I have seen and looked a bit taller than some 6'8 basketball player he met last week in New York ... so I think all the heights are probably right within half an inch or so.

EDIT: I have just found footage of Tyson Fury's reach being measured before the Cunningham fight and it as listed, exactly 7 foot I am guessing then his height is going to be pretty much as listed as if it was much less, a 7 foot reach would be insane on a 6'6 guy

Listen your wrong fury really is. 6;9 Harrison is. 6:5 haye is not 6:3 and chisora is about 6ft
