Best Middleweight in Britain
With Ricky Hatton stating that Martin Murray is the best Middleweight in Britain after comingaway from a points loss against the Pound for Pound ranked Sergio Martinez. Who do we think is the best Middleweight from the British Isles.
Re: Best Middleweight in Britain
Thats a really tough one! I think Murray, Macklin and Barker are on a very similar level! Its really hard to choose between them for who is the dominant one. For me anyway!IRLangmaid25 wrote:With Ricky Hatton stating that Martin Murray is the best Middleweight in Britain after comingaway from a points loss against the Pound for Pound ranked Sergio Martinez. Re: Best Middleweight in Britain
It is when you think about. Because both Murray and Macklin gave Felix Sturm rough nights but gone done over on the scorecards. Then Macklin and Barker put in very creditable performances against Sergio Martinez but got stopped by him which Murray was not and probably give Maravilla his toughest nice since his first fight with Paul Williams so it is a see saw battle between the three of them and it will be interesting to see what Macklin does against Golovkin in his next shot and Barker in hsi which could be against Daniel Geale.columbo wrote:Thats a really tough one! It is and I would like to see it happen as well as a fight between of the 3 would be very very tough to call and who knows perhaps in 12-18 months Billie Joe Saunders might also force himself into the reckoning as well. So the Middleweight division here in the UK is looking very healthy at the moment.

A year ago I'd have agreed RE BJS but now...I'm worried of him falling a long way short of his potential and would actually go with Ryder being the likely one to go the furthest.IRLangmaid25 wrote:It is and I would like to see it happen as well as a fight between of the 3 would be very very tough to call and who knows perhaps in 12-18 months Billie Joe Saunders might also force himself into the reckoning as well. I think going off performances you have to say Murray who turned Pro in 2007 compared to Darren barker in 2004 and Matthew Macklin 2001 so in the shortest Pro career achieved plenty losing 2 world title shots by slightest of margins and also proving himself at World level!!

Add British and Commonwealth titles and you got a strong arguement in there.matko wrote:I think going off performances you have to say Murray who turned Pro in 2007 compared to Darren barker in 2004 and Matthew Macklin 2001 so in the shortest Pro career achieved plenty losing 2 world title shots by slightest of margins and also proving himself at World level!!

The flip of that is that they are all the same age so despite being a pro shorter it's not like he's a spring chicken, in fact him and Barker have the almost the same amount of pro fightsmatko wrote:I think going off performances you have to say Murray who turned Pro in 2007 compared to Darren barker in 2004 and Matthew Macklin 2001 so in the shortest Pro career achieved plenty losing 2 world title shots by slightest of margins and also proving himself at World level!!

Re: Best Middleweight in Britain
Isn't this one of the major things wrong with boxing that most of those of that list have never fought each other?

Re: Best Middleweight in Britain
Macklin may well take a serious 8-10 round beating from Golovkin, which may take its toll on him.
Barker, as is well documented, is one injury or possible defeat away from retirement. His stamina in a tough contest may well be doubtful late on. He is on the shortest time for me.
You have also forgot to add Andy Lee. He would give any of the three a good fight and he might just do Barker late on.
Prince Arron and Kerry Hope won't ever be up there but both good tests for BJS or John Ryder who seem to be on a collision course.
We've also got Chris Eubank Jnr, Adam Etches and Joe Selkirk coming through and a certain Mr Ogogo who could be mixing it at British level in 18 months or so. Craig McEwan is a decent operator as well.
Yes, Murray did ok against an injured and declining Sergio but he still didn't win. Martinez's punches didn't seem to have that snap and his left was seriously messed up by the mid-point.

Macklin has the most miles on the clock as a fighter. By a distance too. He will be adding another 100k miles plus against Golovkiniamasadlittleboy wrote:The flip of that is that they are all the same age so despite being a pro shorter it's not like he's a spring chicken, in fact him and Barker have the almost the same amount of pro fightsmatko wrote:I think going off performances you have to say Murray who turned Pro in 2007 compared to Darren barker in 2004 and Matthew Macklin 2001 so in the shortest Pro career achieved plenty losing 2 world title shots by slightest of margins and also proving himself at World level!!
Will be a painful night for him.
Re: Best Middleweight in Britain
It is ridiculous taking the point another poster mentioned earlier.
We have Murray, Macklin, Barker, Lee, Hope, McEwan, Saunders, Ryder, Blackwell,
Each of these men is in and around the divison at the moment in near enough the same era some are at different levels but have been around whilst some are rising through the ranks so should naturally run into each other.
Out of a possible 36 different potential matchups that could be made between these men in different combinations. We have only seen 4
Murray v Blackwell, Saunders v Blackwell, Lee v McEwan, Barker v Hope.
These matchups are probably some of the least enticing that could have been made. This is what is wrong with boxing by the time all of these guys have retired how many do you think will have fought each other Despite that fact that 4 are already British champions and a couple have been Euro champions and a couple on that list may yet still grab a British/Euro title.
That is what is wrong with the sport of boxing currently.

Same old same old.
Form lines mean fornicate all in boxing.
Only way to sort it is FIGHT EACH OTHER.
Example Lockett gets absolutely mullered by Tsarenko, Rhodes beats Tsarenko on points and gave him a 1 stone weight advantage.

I know it's been said a million times but it would be great to have a domestic super 6 for this current crop of middleweightswrimc wrote:It is ridiculous taking the point another poster mentioned earlier.

Never gonna happen though

Ive never been a big fan of McEwans and I feel like he ended up being a bit of a disappointment to golden boy but otherwise I agree with everything else you've said.ScottDetonator wrote:Macklin may well take a serious 8-10 round beating from Golovkin, which may take its toll on him.

Re: Best Middleweight in Britain
The version of Martinez that Murray fought was the worst of the three, and I thought Murray faded badly in the last couple of rounds and looked very predictable at that point. For me he was brilliant up to that point, but in giving away the last two rounds I feel he lacks something when it really matters. He didn't fight smartly in those last two rounds and lost the fight as a result. I also don't like how Murray and his team are trying to say he won the fight and that the judges were against him. I don't know any neutral who awarded the fight to Murray and most observers felt he started late and faded late and ended up losing a close decision.
Re: Best Middleweight in Britain
Id really like to see Andy lee vs Barker. I know there was talk of that fight happening. Being a lefty myself ive always quite liked Lee's style and he's very technical which I also like! Not sure if he'd beat Barker though. He seems a little chinny at times and doesnt seem like he has the best cardio. The Dark Destroyer wrote:I wish they'd all fight each other so we could actually find out. Exactly. Styles make fights. If Macklin comes up short against GGG hopefully we can see these fights made. It would be great if Hearn could pull his finger out and get a Macklin-Murray, Barker-Lee card on Sky!

If Macklin beats GGG then I say he is Number 1, but he won't and that means Murray is!

IMO It's impossible to call between Macklin/Murray and Barker until they fight each other. It'd be a crying shame if we didn't see these 3 get it on

ugh, no he isn't
he's the kind of fighter who looks like he might be technical, perhaps- southpaws often create that illusion, I've fell for it myself- but no technically adept fighter would take the amount of shots Lee has always taken, in the way he has taken them (backing straight up in punching range/leaning back from punches, trying to pivot off to the side with his hands down and getting clouted with hooks over the shoulder, etc)
basically, just because a bloke moves around a bit and has a teensy bit of offensive flash, doesn't make him a technical boxer.

Re: Best Middleweight in Britain
see the McEwan fight lefty, for a more tecnhically-adept boxer in McEwan eventually getting outmanned (basically in my opinion because Lee was a half stone or whatever bigger), skillswise McEwan had Lee ovr a barrel in that one
