Video: My interview with Paul Ingle - former IBF world champ

Paul was one of my favourite fighters to watch, always entertaining and never in a dull fight. former British, commonwealth, European and IBF, IBO featherweight world champion. Paul gave Prince Naseem Hamed his toughest fight, out-punched Manuel Madina and successfully defended his world title against 'Poison' Junior Jones at Madison Square Gardens.

Pauls career ended in Dec 2000 after he was stopped in the 11th round. Paul was weight drained and couldn't train properly because of injuries and shouldn't have been fighting that night, Paul still to this day doesn't understand why he did go through with the fight and cant remember the training camp for the fight, the fight! Paul fell into a coma afterwards and had to undergo several life saving brain operations and his boxing career was over.

I recently visited Paul at his home in Scarborough, took my camera and we chatted for a couple of hours about his career and the key moments that saw him fight at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, and then storm through the professional British featherweight rankings, cleaning up the domestic titles before becoming champion of the world.

Here is the video I knocked together and I've used footage of Pauls fights to bring his story back to life and to re-live with him the highlights of his remarkable career. This is Video Part One, the Second Part will be uploaded next week.

I remember when he destroyed Colin McMillan, he was a beast that night.

Really enjoyed the film he is credit to the sport .
Look forward to the second part looking out the window of a cafe at a wet windy seafront perfect backdrop for a trip down memory lane.Glad Paul can remember how he felt back then following such an injury.
Not a hint of hard done too or bitterness in his account a genuine top fella.

I attended a benefit night for Paul last weekend in Hull, was a cracking night, Paul seems really well he's apperently started light training and lost a stone in weight.
Sky Sports were in attendence so maybe some fotage will be shown on ringside this thursday

I saw him fight live a couple of times but was never a huge fan, good to see him making an improvement though.

I remember him cutting a swathe through journeymen on his way up the rankings and looking pretty good but he impressed me further with his run at British title level, he absolutely brutalised McMillan winning the title and added Irwin's Commonwealth title to it right down at some stupid time in the morning on a freezing cold Sheffield Arena. JonJo's Dad said that they were originally scheduled to come on about 8pm but got moved down and down the bill until they were the last fight, I think. I don't think it would have made much difference had they fought at the weigh-in, Irwin just couldn't keep a rampaging Ingle off him. I saw him last night and had a long chat with him, he's looking well. That was his Lonsdale belt that McDonnell had in the ring last night. I think Steffy fought on that same bill too, he put up a spirited fight against Pithie, almost having him out of there at one point.

I wasn't quite sure how he would do against Hamed or genuine world class fighters, but he impressed me again in losing to Hamed and winning his world title. I remember his brother kicking off when he got stopped and throwing a couple of chairs about at ringside.
