Don Curry (vs McCrory) vs Tommy Hearns (vs SRL I) 15 Rounds

Post by keithmoonhangover »

This is a mouth watering match up.

Could Curry handle the power?

Does Hearns have the legs to go 15 hard rounds?

This would be an early KO either way. Curry would've definitely been dangerous against anybody the way he was fighting the night he KO'ed McCrory, but I think Hearns' longer reach and power wins the day. Don't see this one going more than 3 rounds, and it would be a shootout all the way.

This is a tough one, because for a couple of nanoseconds, Curry looked nailed on to be an ATG for sure.

When he blitzed McCrory, I thought he was going to be greater than SRL potentially! :o

It's very difficult to predict most fighters to beat Tommy Hearns at 147, but Curry, for the nanoseconds that he was in his pomp, certainly had a chance.

I think SRL had lightning in a bottle that night he beat Hearns. Hearns bad game plan combined with Leonard's great gameplan was Hearns downfall. I wouldn't pick anyone at welter to beat Hearns and I'm a huge Curry fan. Hearns could box and move or seek and destroy vs Curry and win .

I'm not a fan, either, though I started following the sport around the time he fought Norris.

While he was a very skilled fighter in his prime, Donald Curry never once showed the mental or physical toughness to pull off a scenario like Leonard's rallying to stop Hearns.

Agreed. I don't really put much stock in computer program scenarios. If computer programs could tell us fight results, enter in fights coming up in the future (that are going to happen).

Curry could give Hearns hell, but his chin wasn't the strongest, and I don't see him getting past Hearns' reach. He was fortunate to get Milton McCrory at the right time, and Jun Sok Hwang floored him, serious red flag.In the best scenario for Curry, his defense holds him up to lose a tight 15 round split, or majority decision. Most likely, though Curry will hold his own for four, five rounds, maybe have a slight lead, but Hearns will catch up, stop, lock, and coldcock Curry with that right cross in the eighth round.

I forgot Hearns was the ultimate destroyer at 147lbs and not that he flailed around with Randy Shields for 12 rounds and looked less than imposing against no-hopers Luis Primera and Pablo Baez, so of course he'd automatically do a Cuevas on lightning quick, sharp punching, technically sound, non-weight drained Donald Curry. Thanks for straightening that out so simply for me.

Awesome match up.

That Curry would have been tough for anyone in history, including Hearns. He was brilliant. Could go either way, but I lean toward Curry catching him and stopping him. He was a very, very good finisher.

Curry left everything he had in the amateurs. He had over 400 wins and only 4 losses. Think about that for a second. Of all the boxers that got screwed by the 1980 olympic boycott, it was Curry that got screwed the worst. Perhaps Bernard Taylor would have been a distant second.

I have the same fears with GGG and his amateur wear and tear and I had the same fears for Kostya Tzyu as well. Kostya was a top ten most feared amateur fighter of all time. People spoke of "the Russian" in quiet tones when talking about him. He was awesome. But had a short lived, albeit, hall of fame career but should have been more. Too much wear and tear.
