Sky Giving Out Spoilers

I was hoping to watch the Jamie McDonnell fight after the Ricky Burns fight. I'm still going to do that. However, I am now forced to do so knowing the result as the Sky Commentator (not Jim Watt the other guy) felt the need to reveal the result. Right after the finish of the Burns fight. I find this annoying as fornicate. I really do. It's needless.

If allegedly can have a policy where they don't give out the results to fights they aren't showing why can't Sky?

Being more reasonable, I don't mind Sky mentioning the result. It's the mentioning it without warning that I find annoying. If they would have prefaced it by saying, "If you don't want to know the result of the McDonnell fight press mute now" then I would have had no problem. That way the people (like myself) who wanted to avoid it could have done so.

Buncey & Lillis started spoiling fights about 8 months ago on allegedly. I e-mailed B0xantion to complain and got a full apology. I was told my comments had been passed to the production team. Since then I think there has only been about 2 spoilers since last November, one of which Buncey let slip in error.

Was disappointing to hear that it disn't sell well, at the venue. Hopefully, now that Jamie is champion - fans and the TV channels will get behind him.

Glad I don’t post over there; looks like many of their members are unreasonable and have some serious anger issues!

SKY need to stop this for their own sake. If and when SKY go head to head with allegedly or Channel 5 people are more likely to record the SKY show, and watch the other channels broadcast live, purely to avoid spoilers. I’m sure both SKY and Eddie Hearn would prefer fans to tune into their broadcast live rather than watching on a recorded basis. I tend to find if I’m watching a recorded card I’ll skip through the adverts, some of the studio chat, between rounds and undercard fights if they are not entertaining.

I can get through a 4 hour Prizefighter broadcast, in about 1 hour, when I fast forward through all of the chat and adverts!

I don't see the problem with this. For starters the McDonnell fight was over before this one started, so most people planning to watch both will have watched McDonnell first then switched over. Secondly, most people would want to know the result, just like on the football, they tell you the other scores as it's going on, not just think "maybe someone will be wanting to watch the other fight later.
Having said that, I still haven't watch the Trout-Alvarez fight on my Sky+, so no one tell me the result or I'll be very angry!

Conflicting boxing events are now the norm on both sides of the Atlantic. Many fans in N. America and the UK now watch one show live and the other in recorded form "as live". I don't think certain commentators make the connection between "breaking the news" and spoiling the enjoyment of many fans who hope to watch both shows without knowing the results.

I wasn't living in the UK at the time of the Witherspoon-Bruno fight but I do know there was an outcry among boxing fans when, just before the BBC showed the next-morning full recording of the big fight, the female presenter helpfully gave the result of the fight.

In the States, HBO and Showtime seem to have an unspoken gentleman's agreement not to give out spoilers of each other's shows. The folks in charge at HBO and Showtime are well aware that thousands of boxing fans will be watching one show live and will be planning to watch the other show "as live" and, as I understand it, neither side wants to start a "spoiler" bloodbath ...

When there is a big night of televised boxing I just don't pick up the phone. I don't want anyone shouting down the phone, before I can get in a word: "What an upset tonight!!" ... When the BBC would have next-evening recordings of big heavyweight title fights from America, our late and much-missed friend Harry Mullan would go to quite extraordinary lengths to avoid the result.

I guess the answer for UK fans is to watch the "rival" show live and record the Sky show for viewing "as live", as someone posted earlier, if the folks at Sky continue to give these "breaking news" bulletins.

I suppose the Sky people would say that giving the result of the "other" big fight is all part of the broadcast experience and that they are acting in the interests of "good journalism". Who knows?

The great Las Vegas oddsmaker Herb Lambeck always wanted to watch fights with the result unknown. He told me that once his pal Jack Fiske, the Hall of Fame boxing writer, phoned him to ask his opinion on a fight that had taken place earlier that day. Herb said: "Jack, before you say anything more, I haven't watched the fight yet so please don't tell me the result." Jack Fiske replied, as Herb remembered it: "OK, Herb. But call me back when you've seen the fight and let me know what you think of the decision." I remember Herb saying to me: "I didn't make a big deal out of it with Jack, but I said to myself: 'Damn! Now I know the fight went the distance!' "
