So there are 16 - yes SIXTEEN sanctioning bodies in business today. That is a effing lot
- even more than I thought there was, so what I am going to do is rank them in seniority
- the most established to the least. So the WBA - it came from the old NBA is the senior belt
and then comes the WBC, then IBF which was an offshoot of the WBA (again) and then the WBO
which was another offshoot of the WBA. So

WBA: Richar Abril
WBA Super: Vacant
WBC: Adrien Broner
WBC Youth World: Jose Maxian
IBF: Miguel Vasquez
WBO: Ricky Burns
WBB: Vacant
WBF: Chris Goodwin
WBPF: Vacant
IBO: Emiliano Marsili
IBA: Vacant
IBU: Vacant
GBO:
GBU:
GBF:
GBF:

And I haven't added the WBC 'Silver' title which is an interim world championship. Because we would have nine champions.

So even amongst that lot, I would have Ricky Burns the 4th best lightweight out of all those fighters calling themselves 'champions' and you might say - I don't know what you would say. I remember there being one world champion and the day he wasn't the best in his weight class is the day he got his title took off him, now when you have 16 - 17 title belts where people can call themselves 'lightweight champion of the world' that is a problem don't you think? If Brazil beat England in the world cup semi final and then England played Argentina in the third place play off and went home and called themselves 'world cup champions' everyone would laugh and say how ridiculous it is for them to do that, but for some reason, Ricky Burns not being the best lightweight in the world calling himself 'world champion' should be ridiculous but it doesn't seem to be on here.

If there was 5 miss worlds, 5 formula one world champions, 5 prime ministers, 5 field marshals - their title and prestige would hold no weight. We all know Ricky Burns isn't the best fighter at 135 - so why is it ridiculous to question his right to call him 'world champion' (singular).

What he should call himself is 'world title claimant'
Youth titles aren't world titles, the fighters themselves wouldn't say they were a world champion if they held one and the silver title isn't an interim title, they have them as well, they have silver, international and international silver titles, they're like Frank's old favourite, the WBO intercontinental title, winning them will give the fighter a top 15 ranking.

My iPad doesn't seem to want to include desperados post. But all I can say is I hope Mallignaggi beats Broner I loved his Punch-Out Wii advert, I love the way he battles on with confidence despite his career set backs, and I especially love the way he verbally attacks Broner and so far has come out on top in that regard.

But no amount of talk about Daniel Ponce de Leon will convince me that Ricky Burns could beat Adrien Broner. No chance.

Well, why isn't it a world championship? It is marketed as one but it has a (so called) age limit that they don't regulate, there have been fighters well over the age of 21 or whatever fighting for it. As for the Silver belt - it is an interim world championship belt, you can look it up easily enough. And what does interim mean? Transient, temporary - so, he is a 'temporary' world champion. It is all bollocks and a scam but still - some folks here are happy with it. :-?

Fight lasts 12 rounds. Gonzalez couldn't make it to the finish line. Winner Burns. And still.......

Whilst technically you are right, you can fight for the Youth title when you're over the age of 21 (it's up to 23 years 11 months actually) it becomes automatically vacant if you win it and you're over the age limit. Those rules are all on the WBC site somewhere (starting point http://www.wbcyouthpro.org/rules.html)

Much as it pains me to agree with Carlos (a man so objectionable he invites people to come round his house and fight him - http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=53902), he is absolutely bang-on here. What are we doing thinking of Ricky as a world champion when he's getting his arse kicked for what may be the 4th or 5th best regarded 'world title' out of the galaxy of shit boxing straps? No wonder our sport has no fornicating credibility.

fornicate me - that thread was from 7 years ago. And the gentleman concerned wanted to come round my house and beat me (and many others) up.

I am a pudendum - but could you not find something a bit more recent? :D

Stealing rounds? My erse. Outclassed for the majority of the fight, milk the cash cow 2 more times then gamble on the Unification. I doubt the other champs are worried...unless the fight is in Glasgow

Ricky made a lot of excuses in that presser and its funny listening to Eddie as when one of the journalists brought up the idea of a rematch to Ricky, Eddie pipes up for him saying no! People keep going on about Eddie being good for boxing but he seems to like putting on mismatches aswell and protecting his fighters. He was supposed to be a breathe of fresh air for british boxing but he's not looking like that at the moment.

I had González up 7-2, but it don't matter if it was 11-0, boxing is about the toughest man standing at the end and the Puerto Rican sat down.
Doesn't matter how good or how much talent he may have his heart isn't there, wouldn't surprise me if he don't fight again.

The crowd were great, good atmosphere and a smooth running show. Burns/Gonzalez didn't look as one sided as some are saying. Was good to see Choi in action, still in good nick for 41.

Anyone thing if it was broner in there tonight that burns would won??? There is a reason they were avoiding him. Is ok now tho, billy can say all he wants that burns would beat broner when they have no intention of ever fighting him (they had 2 chances we no of) but the bottom line is the fight is dead. Broner is at 147 and can anyone see burns fighting him at 147 if he already ducked him at 130 and 135. Only top top fighters jump 2 weight classes and win a title in there first fight and as much as I think broner is a dick hes pretty much unstopable, and its fighter like burns who are making this sport look bad by not taking the toughest fights/ the fights the fans want to see.

Gonzalez would give all of the other 15 world champions a lot of trouble as well.

Remind me which aspect of last nights fight could be described as a mismatch or protection? To me it seemed the opposite.

Best way to compare World Champions is to compare reigns at the weight, so here goes...

WBC - Adrien Broner
W Rees RTD 6
W DeMarco TKO 8 (champion)

WBA - Richar Abril
W Bogere UD 12 (vacant)

IBF - Miguel Vasquez
W Gesta UD 12
W Quintero SD 12
W Ammeth Diaz UD 12
W Zappavigna UD 12
W Dominguez UD 12
W Kim UD 12 (Vacant)

WBO - Ricky Burns
W Gonzalez RTD 10
W Mitchell TKO 4
W Moses UD 12
W Katsidis UD 12 (Vacant Interim)

Nothing here suggests Burns is more or less of a paper champ than any of the other contenders. To use the historical prestige of titles (WBC and WBA in particular) is to ignore some of the ridiculous decisions they have made over the years. Based on current champions across all divisions, I don't actually think there is anything between the 4 main bodies.

Any chance at leastbsome of this was to do with burns having already been through two long training camps before this one and messed about?

Not exactly ideal preparation.

I bet kell brook doesn't tear trees down in his next fight either.

So has Gonzalez said why he quit? Was it an injury or did he just not want it anymore?

Would of liked to have seen how it would of panned out to the end of the fight as gonzalez didnt seem to want it after trading in the second?
