Good point, if Hatton steams in then who is to say the wild, unorthodox Maussa doesn't collar him. While Maussa is still swinging he is dangerous, Ricky needs to punish the body. Maussa for all his shortfalls is a big danger because he is the unknown quantity, Hatton needs to take him seriously if he is going to do the job we all expect.

I've got me tickets for this fight & even though the lads that i'm going with have took the piss out of my prediction, i reckon this fight goes the distance, i even think Hatton could get knockeddown, i know its a bit extreme but maussa aint coiming over here to be a whipping boy is he, he took cotto 8 rounds, ko'd harris, has a goods ko record, don't underestimate the guy.
In and out combinations behind a jab - easy nights work. You don't even need to prepare that much - as long as you don't punch yourself out beating Maussa is a piece of piss
I would honestly say that Hatton needs to stay close and keep the fight on the inside. Maussa is only effective when he's throwing shot's from the back of the hall and if you can keep inside of those big arcs then there shouldnt be any problems. My guess is Hatton makes this guy look like a chump and finishes him in around 6.
Foggy - I'm going to the fight as well, so don't want to dampen the evening, but I think it is Hatton within three. Maussa only has one style and Hatton's counerpunching is way underated. I have put a decent three figure sum on Hatton in one, I think it could be that simple.

can't see this going the distance, Hatton inside 5 rounds for me, In the Harris fight Maussa was shattered after 3 rounds, luckily for him Harris was knackered after 1 round. if you watch the fight Maussa could only manage to fight for about 30 seconds of the rounds, and thats when he didn't have hardly anything coming back at him from Harris.
Hatton will be neater and tidier for this one, less frantic and more measured. I'm sure we'll see more of Hatton's jab, blocking Maussa's wild swings, underneath and then body attack.
Maussa presumably, can only come forward, which will bring him right in to range for Ricky.
Maussa will have heart and wont fold, but Hatton brings power, volume and angles that few other fighters can measure.
Ask yourself this, who does Maussa employ to prepare for Hatton.
To address the question posed in the thread, its like asking how do a Premier League team prepare to face Grimsby.
Keep the ball and dont play their game. I think there is somethign to be drawn from that. Hatton has the class, control and technique in the fight. As long as he employs it and doesn't get drawn into a slug-fest, he's home dry.
Though sadly for Maussa, in a slug-fest, Hatton probably wins too.

jesus loynesy, a 'decent three figure sum' on hatton in 1? That's balls, I really don't think it'll happen so quick, not least because hatton hasn't KO'd anyone in 1 in a long time..
Probably best if Ricky starts a few fights outside the local Kebab shop on a Sat night - the styles will be very similar to Maussa and will give him good practice ducking a few roundhouse swings from the hip.
Funny but this fight reminds me a bit of the Boza Edwards/Rolando Navarette fight back in the 80's.
Boza was world #1, and given an easy one after a few wars. Navarette was a slugger given absolutely NO chance against the much better schooled Boza - everyone thought he was in for an easy night.
But one thing Navarette could do was hit....Boza took him to school for a few rounds, but got careless and Rolando suddenly landed a bomb from out of the blue. Three or four knockdowns later and Boza was an ex champ in a real shocker.
Hatton should watch the video of that one - definitely.
One things for sure you don't stand off on a wild swinger you could get caught , Hatton comes inside and stays there with pressure it should be a easy night for him.
But with saying that the thing that makes these guys dangerous is there so unorthodox , they do every thing wrong and come out with so much novice shit that they can catch a boxer unawares, they just don't do what there supposed to do , and don't be suprised if the head goes in to try and get Hatton to stand off a little, he'll be looking to make Hatton stand off or catch him coming in , my bets it will get real dirty in there once Hatton gets past his haymakers,

IMO Maussa doesn't stand a chance, this is a guy who has only beaten 5 guys with a winning record, He got lucky against Harris, who must have been the worst prepared champion in recent history, completly shot after a round.
When Harris did land Maussa looked ready to go, he just couldn't follow it up.
Against Miguel Angel Cotto he showed bravery , but was completly outclassed. Maussa just doesn't have the skills to cope with Hatton.
Jab is critical to beat Maussa, I think the natural style clash for Hatton vs Maussa makes this a more difficult fight for Ricky than the rest of the champions, but he looks better in every department than Maussa. I think he will fight the "wrong" fight and still win.
The fact he quite obviously hadn't trained. He looked ok for the 1st round or so, and then was completely gassed.
Unless Hatton does 'A Harris' I see no reason to believe this will be a hard fight. Hatton will find it easy to tag Maussa with his superior handspeed and far tidier work. Maussa will probably be pretty tought to dispatch as he seems like a tough nut, but Hatton is superior in every department except maybe 1 shot power. To be honest though, Harris' punch resistance was completely gone and the shot Maussa tagged him with to put him down was nothing all that special, Ricky took far harder from Tszyu and plenty of them.
One thing which is a worry is the way Maussa thunders in with his head low, Ricky needs to be careful he doesn't get tagged with the coconut on the way in.
Serious question... How is Hatton going to prepare for Maussa's wild swinging unorthodox style, (if you can call it a style)?
1. Would you suggest Hatton get's in close and punishes the body? Keeps the fight at close range all the time?
2. Or stands back... Waits for Maussa to throw a wild haymaker, then punish him for it every time?
Here's how I'd breakdown the fight. Keep in mind that I'm the self-declared biggest fan of Ricky Hatton in the United States. So maybe this will come across as jaded.
Here's a couple of quick points that need to be addressed before you even analyze this fight. Carlos Maussa is an unorthodox fighter but he's an easily beatable fighter. Vivian Harris came out in their fight with one mentality, try to decapitate the guy with every single punch. By the end of the first round Harris was out of gas and looked like an amateur in there throwing everything with bad intentions and not landing. He grossly underestimated Maussa's ability to stay in the fight and his ability to hello, throw punches of his own. I'd say not to judge Maussa from this fight alone. If you wanna see a blueprint for how to beat him watch his fight with Miguel Cotto. Cotto didn't allow the awkward style to trouble him and he executed his gameplan. Once you get past the awkwardness then Maussa is a very ordinary fighter.
It's hard to say that Hatton should allow Maussa to come to him and counter his mistakes. Ricky isn't a natural counterpuncher. He's a smothering, volume puncher who does his best work on the inside. That said by staying in close he exposes himself to Maussa's power. But I also agree with James on this one. The Harris knockout wasn't all about Maussa's one punch power. It was a combination of a good shot and the fact that Harris was absolutely spent. So to me that makes it a risk worth taking. I think Ricky's best bet is to do what he always does. Stay on the inside and really take his opponent to task. If he does this against Maussa I can see a late stoppage or easy UD win.
