Ricky Burns won the lottery last night ! WOW .

Post by CiganoBoxer »

Lets be fair last night was not a great victory for Burns to celebrate ,from the get go Burns limitability was exposed as he was out thought/outboxed/out-skilled for 7 of the 9 rounds and was gonna get stopped if it carried on ,lets have it right the only reason Burns won that fight last night cause it was give to him due to Gonzalez forearm being broke and him giving up.

Agree with most of what you say apart from the "only reason" Burns won,the other reason was that Burns has the heart of a true champion and broke Gonzalez,s,if Gonzalez was in total control he would have rode it out and became a world champ,he had already done the hard part but showed a bit of the Victor Ortiz syndrome which sometimes isnt good enough, kinda reminds me of the Josesito Lopez fight actually, but yeah lets just say Ricky dodged a big bullet

The old saying goes: "Better being lucky than good". The finish still bemuses me, broken heart my erse Gonzalez was 3 rounds away from being world champion.

Things like this make me lose my belief in the sport when you get fishy endings like that! Get the Broner fight made now haha! :yay:

Yeah its probably 1 of the strangest endings iv seen in a long time, was it a sore wrist/arm?,lack of heart?,conditioning? who knows? important thing is he,s got this mandatory out of the way and he can be grateful to still have his title and lets move on,every fighter has a bad day at the office every once in a while,he can just think himself lucky 2 things though
1-It was Burns first bad night in a while
2-Jose Gonzalez is a quality operator who i expect to see again fighting for major honours

Seemed fairly obvious to me that Gonzalez gassed after his exertions in the 7th and lacked the fortitude to grit his teeth and get through it. And to anyone suggesting something fishy was going on why would Gonzalez try so hard to take Burns out in the 7th?

I'm guessing here but I assume it was broke in round 7, meaning he'd fought 2 rounds with it being damaged and knew that if he'd done 3 more he'd not do enough to win (same thing reflected on the scorecards) so thought "better to fight another day".

Yeah but atleast with Ortiz he had a broken jaw in that fight! A broken wrist when you've got three or four rounds to go and you're winning the fight?! Cmon now.

I'm very lucky that I've never broke a bone but have sprained my ankle a couple of times. The pain was incredble and I know people have different pain thesholds but it would have been inconcievable to me to have jogged or run anywhere or even put weight on it. There are different sorts of breaks and a bad one would hurt really bad, there's not a chance that a decent punch could be thrown.

Ive ripped ligaments in my knee badly and was still walking on it when my leg kept buckling until someone told me to go to the hospital and I also shattered my elbow bone so badly they said i might not be able to use my arm again and i had to have pins inserted. The latter was really painful at the time but Gonzalez's own corner seemed very disappointed in him aswell mate.

I accept that some ankle, knee injuries mean that you couldn't walk so that to continue would be impossible. Many fighters fight through broken noses for example and obv cuts where the pain obv increases a lot when you are punched.
With your hand and wrist you can just scuttle about without throwing it so there is no further injury. He had 3 rounds to go with an unassailable lead and his other hand was fine as well. This is for a world title which would have changed his life ffs.
He hardly expended much energy in the first 6 rounds.

Gonzales was very skilled and showed lots of speed and power; Ricky is a top level boxer but was thrown out of his stride and pace by Gonzales. Only he knows how much pain he was in but it strikes meas odd that someone would go through 22 professional bout and travel to Scotland to face Burns if he were a scaredy cat and a softy who had no tolerence to pain. Gonzales semed to have shot his bolt and maybe had just had enough; Ricky did well to get through nd I'm happy for him and glad he did not box Broner who would have took the absolute piss.

Burns showed a lot of heart and that ended up being the difference. At the top level you need heart and skill in my opinion to be a top level fighter.

His lead WASN'T unassailable, he was 3 up with 3 left, he'd likely fought 2 rounds with the hand banged up and would have ended up with a draw on the cards...

So by those scores he gave up a draw and a rematch, if he only had 10% of his talent in his heart.

He "gave up" a rematch? Never have I of a mandatory getting a rematch just for getting a draw. Especially not when they are like Gonzalez and in the high risk-low reward category.

I could see the stoppage coming 30 seconds before, Gonzalez was sat in the corner with the towel over his head and the way he was speaking to his corner, even though I couldn't understand a word of it, suggested something was wrong.

I think burns and broner is still interesting! Rickys biggest problem was finding the target the other night, and broner can be easy to hit! I think the heart, fitness and toughness he showed only make it more interesting! Vasquez would have been a nightmare though! Avoid that one I reckon!

Of course if broner beats malignaggi impressively I might change my mind but at the moment he's still a bit of an unknown quantity at the very top level IMO

it's not all about broner.

show some appreciation for burns, who's done dozens of world championship rounds, almost always fights good opponents and who shows something different ever fight.

we've seen the slugging and boxing (martinez), the nifty boxing (katsidis), punching (mitchell) and the perseverance (vs gonzalez).

it's about winning, and sometimes you have to win in different ways. the next fight targeted is miguel vazquez, so let's see what adjustments burns can make. no one has ever called out vazquez, no one's ever made an effort to face the tricky mexican.
