I think Jose was knackered due to making LW and knew Ricky was still strong and basically bottled it, 9 mins is an eternity when someone is punching you and you've nothing whatsoever left in your body

Bricks were definitely shat though Billy until that point.billy nelson wrote:I think Jose was knackered due to making LW and knew Ricky was still strong and basically bottled it, 9 mins is an eternity when someone is punching you and you've nothing whatsoever left in your body
I was sat thinking, who the eff is this guy? he was very good indeed until the bizarre conclusion.
Ricky seemed to really lunge and put everything into the punches, and because of this, he became predictable to Gonzales. I remember Calzaghe was good at mixing up soft punches and then throwing in the hard ones randomly. I was willing Ricky to feint and then double up once Gonzales had committed to moving that head in his chosen direction. Ricky needs a bit more kidology I think - and no smiles, no touching gloves, to be "all business".

I must admit, the look on Gonzo's trainer was disbelief - he put the towel over his own face and sighed at the crowd if you watch it back. During the corner talk, Gonzo didn't really say there was a big problem, it was the fact he sat on his stool at the start of the round which signalled the ref to wave him off.Dead Mouse wrote:It’s about being the complete package, not just about looking good early in the fight. Gonzalez tried to take Burns out, realised it wasn’t going to happen and then quit. Burns turned it around by out-dogging him, which is a championship quality. Burns didn’t get lucky, Gonzalez quit because he found himself in with someone who took his shots and came roaring back.
His trainer then kind of walked off, and it was Billy who chatted to him, gesturing with the elbow as if to say "did you catch an elbow on the hand" ?

this is why i'd like to see a rematch. see how good gonzalez is when he paces the fight properly.Dead Mouse wrote:It’s about being the complete package, not just about looking good early in the fight. Re: Ricky Burns won the lottery last night ! WOW .
Gonzales was the mandatory and not chosen, now I see why!
He was way better than I expected and would give anyone at that weight a tough night.
Credit to Burns, he realised it was all fading away in the 7th and he stood his ground and IMO took Gonzales best and broke his spirit.
It's not really a good phrase to say he bottled it. He came in shape and clearly came to win as was evident in the first 7 rounds, I just think Ricky broke him, he chose to quit with the injury because, like a lot of big punchers, he tried and didn't KO his opponent and knew he then lacked the power and remaining fitness reserves from thereon in to go to war.
But Burns needs some serious improvement in his defensive performance if he's gonna step up in weight and take on Broner..

I watched the fight with a mate who had £400 on Burns at 1/4, he fcuking shat his pants.
Re: Ricky Burns won the lottery last night ! WOW .
Arent you concerned about the manner in which Ricky was getting outclassed up until that point though? Ricky showed a ton of heart and toughness which ended up winning him the fight, however he was getting outboxed pretty badly.billy nelson wrote:None shat bigger than me lol seriously I know Ricky is super tough and he proved that sat nightG0mez wrote:Bricks were definitely shat though Billy until that point.billy nelson wrote:I think Jose was knackered due to making LW and knew Ricky was still strong and basically bottled it, 9 mins is an eternity when someone is punching you and you've nothing whatsoever left in your body

Almost always fights good opponents? He's fought some pretty mediocre opposition aswell....... Mitchell is a good european level fighter but thats it, Paulus Moses isnt anything special and Katsidis is very limited if you have a decent chin. Its not like Ricky's been fighting the elite of the division.Autobarn wrote:it's not all about broner.
show some appreciation for burns, who's done dozens of world championship rounds, almost always fights good opponents and who shows something different ever fight.
we've seen the slugging and boxing (martinez), the nifty boxing (katsidis), punching (mitchell) and the perseverance (vs gonzalez).
it's about winning, and sometimes you have to win in different ways. the next fight targeted is miguel vazquez, so let's see what adjustments burns can make. no one has ever called out vazquez, no one's ever made an effort to face the tricky mexican.
Re: Ricky Burns won the lottery last night ! WOW .
Miguel Acosta knocked him out in 6 rounds and he has lost himself to Brandon Rios and Richard Abril and now a couple of other guys I dont even know much about.Dead Mouse wrote:Moses is a really good fighter, as it goes.
Re: Ricky Burns won the lottery last night ! WOW .
Im not saying they're mediocre, but are they the elite of the division? I think the answer is no to be fair.Dead Mouse wrote:Acosta is 35, he was creaky before Rios stopped him and slid from that point. Prior to that he had a good run and was in the form of his life when he met Moses, who was on the up. Moses looked excellent against Yusuke Kobori, which you probably haven't seen, and, as I said, is a really good fighter. Neither Moses, Mitchell or Katsidis are 'mediocre', to say they are is complete and utter nonsense.columbo wrote:Miguel Acosta knocked him out in 6 rounds and he has lost himself to Brandon Rios and Richard Abril and now a couple of other guys I dont even know much about.Dead Mouse wrote:Moses is a really good fighter, as it goes.

Re: Ricky Burns won the lottery last night ! WOW .
It's often the championship rounds which make or break a fighter, Gonzales hadn't fought in 12 rounders, and didn't have the heart to bite on his gumshield down the home straight.
As Billy said 9 minutes is a hell of a long time when you are knack erred, ESP when you got someone punching your head in!
But if Ricky had been in in that position he would have def gritted it out.

Re: Ricky Burns won the lottery last night ! WOW .
I think Burns hurt him in the 7th more than people have given credit for.... not just him getting knackered, Burns hurt him..... worst thing that happend to Gonzales was him hurting Burns.
Judging by that though, I make Vasquez the favourite now if they do ever fight (sorry Billy).

Burns was far too eager to land his shots.....
Tactics should have changed after round one, to hold back, take his time, feint and counter...
May have made a boring fight but winning is more important....

they were all in ring mag's top 10 before fighting burns.columbo wrote:Almost always fights good opponents? He's fought some pretty mediocre opposition aswell....... unlike gavin rees who was ranked in the top 10 after losing to broner - bizarre, until you consider broner's inflated place in the p4p rankings.
martinez, moses, katsidis, mitchell - and gonzalez who proved he can box was in the WBO's top 10, a fight that needed getting out of the way.
and miguel vazquez, the nifty, tricky holder of the IBF title, is on the horizon, having pulled out of a burns fight before (injured).
broner is trendy, whereas burns looks to me like a lasting champion at 135 - a guy we should respect and stick with and admire for the perseverance and discipline he shows. like i say, there's different ways to win fights. if burns was dominating everyone, it'd be boring.
personally, wouldn't mind seeing burns and gonzalez go at it again, but gonzalez seems to be the obstacle to unification with the fine boxer, vazquez.

Please point out where Burns came roaring back ?? ,in fact would you need more than one hand to count the amount of times Burns actually landed on Gonzalez ?Dead Mouse wrote: Burns didn’t get lucky, Gonzalez quit because he found himself in with someone who took his shots and came roaring back.
The only reason the one sided beating Burns was getting from Gonzalez ended was because Gonzalez stopped due to injury ..FACT....lets get it straight ...no roaring back lol

thats one way of looking at itDead Mouse wrote:Rounds seven and eight. If, as you say, there was nothing coming back, and Gonzalez opted to quit, then he quit despite not having to worry about in-coming fire. The other option is that Burns came at him and, although not as effective as he could be, it was enough to make Gonzalez think that he would not be able to hold Burns off for the remainder of the fight. If you go for option one then Gonzalez out-and-out quit and doesn't deserve another crack at the title; if you go for the other one then you can argue that Burns helped put the quit in him.mrpedigree wrote:Please point out where Burns came roaring back ?? ,in fact would you need more than one hand to count the amount of times Burns actually landed on Gonzalez ?Dead Mouse wrote: Burns didn’t get lucky, Gonzalez quit because he found himself in with someone who took his shots and came roaring back.

The other guy looked completely spent in the last two rounds. He had nothing at all left in his legs. The very least that would have happened is that Burns would have won all of the remaining rounds. Me personally, I think Burns would have got stronger and Gonzalez would have got even weaker. I think Burns could have stopped him.
Re: Ricky Burns won the lottery last night ! WOW .
Certainly my way of looking at it. Think its pretty clear he knew what was coming.mrpedigree wrote: thats one way of looking at it

When Ricky lent on him and heis Knesset hit the floor, notice how slow hews getting up on his feet,he was very very tired and Ricky still had fuel in the tank
Re: Ricky Burns won the lottery last night ! WOW .
Never really understood why people criticise a come from behind victory. To me it’s even more of a feather in the cap. Froch’s come from behind win over Taylor took him 2 levels as a fighter in my opinion.
Maybe it’s because Gonzalez quitting took away Ricky’s moment to stop him. but Ricky will be a better fighter because of this.
I hope Gonzalez goes on to have a fine career.

I'm sure Ricky had more fuel in the tank, nobody is disputing that, but I feel it was his heart broken not his wrist, and I bet you would have been heartbroken if Ricky quit in the same manner if he was ahead late on in the fight.

The Bottom line was the more skilled man on the night bizarrely gave that title fight away,it was nothing that Burns did that helped him keep that title, the only way burns could of won that fight was if the other man gave up or got injured, witch is what happened .billy nelson wrote:When Ricky lent on him and heis Knesset hit the floor, notice how slow hews getting up on his feet,he was very very tired and Ricky still had fuel in the tank
If the Burns camp is that sure of their guy why not an immediate rematch and prove the critics wrong ?..i am sure all us fans would love to see Burns get revenge
The only way Burns beats Gonzalez in a rematch is if Gonzalez gives up or gets injured again..to risky a rematch ??
