Haye Vs. Valuev racked up 800,000 PPV buys, Haye Vs. Harrison sold 700,000 and Haye Vs. Klitschko as much as 1.2 million buys. People have suggested Froch Vs. Bute drew around 650,000 viewers on SKY Sports. On this basis I think 500,000 PPV buys for Froch Vs. Kessler II would be a realistic target.desperados wrote: 500k seems massive. What does bigger UK PPV numbers, JC or Froch v Kessler?

Hatton-Mayweather was the biggest ever with estimates of 1.2 million. Bruno-Tyson 2 did 660,000 in 1996!

Well that is a very convincing argumentKhaosai-Galaxy wrote:Sorry mate, but those PPV numbers are total baloney.
I'm just going by figures published in the press. I'm all for believing you if you'd be prepared to post some links to alternative figures. Until then, I'm happy with my sources.

PPV numbers are all about casual & football fans imo. Hattons about the only guy to rack up that kind of exposure that wasn't a bigtime heavyweight imo. All those numbers do seem big to me when you think along the lines of % of UK population. The UK population is 62 million. How many are children under 18... maybe about 15 million? That leaves around 45 million adults, if we say half of that are male, that's 22 million adult males. (just my estimations ofcourse). So for the UK to get numbers of 1 million PPV sales for boxing, especially considering fans of boxing probably group up for the real big fights in the designated persons house, is a huge number. It works out a far higher % of the population than america's top PPV numbers.

SKY have never released the figures for the Haye fights (which says a lot), but BARB have estimated less than 250,000 viewers for all those fights.
If the figures you quote are accurate, why was Haye and Chisora not on PPV?

Yes you are quite right, only crossover stars can draw the big PPv numbers. Hatton, Hamed, Bruno, Tyson etc etc are names that every bloke in the UK knows, where as Carl Froch and David Haye have sadly never crossed over into the main stream.
There is an awful lot of "heads in arses" in British boxing forums. Suggesting that Froch - Kessler will be a bigger PPV than Lewis - Tyson, Hatton - Mayweather, Bruno - Tyson etc is ludicrous.

Wasn't Floyd Mayweather presented with an award for the biggest PPV sales ever at the pre-fight conference for the Guerrero fight? That was for the De La Hoya fight and the figures I've seen before for that suggest it reached just over 2m buys, although I think those figures are only HBO figures for the US.
On that basis I'd be staggered if Hatton/Mayweather reached 1.2m in this country alone. I'm guessing the figures mentioned above are for this country alone as I can't see any way that either Hatton or Bruno had that big a fan base outside the UK.

Mayweather holds the record for PPV buys for a non-heavyweight, i think it was 2.4m in his fight with Oscar. But make no mistake about it, Oscar was the draw, not Mayweather.
USA apparently has around 320m population, so if 2.4m is a record there, then i find it astonishing the UK can hit around 1m buys in a population of 60m. Thats the equivalent of about 5.5m buys in America.

Exactly. Oscar had the Mexican audience too.desperados wrote:MarkMcBurney wrote:Wasn't Floyd Mayweather presented with an award for the biggest PPV sales ever at the pre-fight conference for the Guerrero fight? Re: What does bigger UK PPV numbers, JC or Froch v Kessler?
David Haye had 4 fights in total on SKY Box Office being Valuez, Ruiz, Harrison and Klitschko. I agree it's very difficult to find anything from SKY regarding PPV buys however, here is some telling quotes from SKY rgerading David Haye on SKY Box Office.Khaosai-Galaxy wrote:SKY have never released the figures for the Haye fights (which says a lot), but BARB have estimated less than 250,000 viewers for all those fights.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/no ... matic-haye
"Sources at Sky, which broadcast the fight on pay-per-view, reported that they had to hire extra staff to deal with requests as interest grew in the lead-up."
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14005228
"Broadcaster Sky has apologised to customers after its pay-per-view coverage of a world title boxing fight was hit by technical problems. It said there was an "issue" with late phone and online bookings amid "unprecedented demand" to watch British boxer David Haye take on Wladimir Klitschko."
I'm not really a fan of figures on BARB however some of the figures on the BARB website do make for interesting reading. I admit if some of these figures accurate then some of the figures I quoted are wrong, but then again some are right. They do however completely blow your figures and argument to pieces. Unfortunately they do not go back as far as the Valuev fight however some here on Boxrec did record the BARB viewing figures for the event at that time.
David Haye Vs. Nikolay Valuev - 07th November 2009
http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f ... 6&start=75
SKY Box Office weekly reach: 469,000
David Haye Vs. John Ruiz - 03rd April 2010
http://www.barb.co.uk/viewing/weekly-to ... 1004060104
SKY Box Office weekly reach: 177,000
David Haye Vs. Audley Harrison - 13th November 2010
http://www.barb.co.uk/viewing/weekly-to ... 1011060114
SKY Box Office weekly reach: 223,000
David Haye Vs. Wladimir Klitschko - 02nd July 2011
http://www.barb.co.uk/viewing/weekly-to ... 1107060103
SKY Box Office weekly reach: 1,143,000
That's 2,012,000 PPV buys over 4 events or on average 503,000 per PPV outing. Sadly BARB don't cover commercial PPV buys for pubs and clubs so the actual figures could be much higher. At 14.95 per PPV buy, that is an incredible £30,079,400. That doesn't sound like a PPV flop to me!

America is a very divided country, though. Literally tens of millions of people will not have even heard of those fights whereas here we all knew Bruno-Tyson and Hatton-Mayweather was taking place.
