Jimmy Young vs Billy Aird Question.

32 years ago today future Heavyweight Title challenger Jimmy Young came over to the UK and fought a eight round draw against the UK's Billy Aird at World Sporting Club, London.

At this point Young was still a little inexperienced but it was still a great result for the limited (in world tems) Billy Aird.

Does anyone have any memories or information on this fight? Was it a fair decision etc.

As you know Billy is one of our Merseyside fighters and at present lives in the london area and attends a former boxers assoc meetings - forgot which one at the moment- I was hoping to see him soon but not sure when etc.

Should be able to get some details on this at some point and will make a point of sending them to you

That would be fantastic if you could do that Rob. I am a big Jimmy Young fan and always eager to learn more about his career.

Also Billy Aird had a very respectable career, as well as Young he fought many big name such as Richard Dunn, Bunny Johnson, John Conteh, Gregorio Peralta, Kevin Isaac, Alfredo Evangelista, John L Gardner, Gordon Ferris and Steve Gee. Thats a very impressive list, he must have some great stories to tell. I also notice he beat Big Cliff Field twice, Fields by all accounts was a very powerfull man with a big punch who went on to box on unlicensed cards with a lot of success. I heard that these two fights were stopped on cuts, but having never seen them I can say for sure.

The last I heard about Cliff Field was that he had developed a very bad drinking problem and in a bad way after suffering a stroke about 2 years ago.

I have Airds fight against John Conteh if you're interested. Aird was a pretty good boxer, clever and pretty fast but lacked power. Looking at his career he was also rather erratic, a man/fighter of moods perhaps.
I have a lot on Aird and Young too in my 70s boxing News papers.
Young also fought twice more in London... in feb 11 '74 he koed Richard Dunn in 8 and on April 22nd the same year he outpointed Les Stevens over 10 rounds.

I have a contact address for billy and will write to him later in the week. i will send him the questions and with a bit of luck we will get some comments from him . Several of the guys in our assoc. know him very well so i will ask them also. will be several weeks however
