Barker v Geale
Barker v Geale
Can't see a thread on this, so....
Barker gets his 2nd shot at a world title when he takes on Aussie IBF champ, Daniel Geale, in New York on August 17th.
While Geale is one of the weaker 160lb champions, by most modern standards he is a worthy titlist having beaten Sylvester, Sturm (for the WBA title that was later stripped and "handed" to Golovkin) and avenging a prior defeat to Anthony Mundine.
It's a great opportunity for Barker and having it on neutral ground is a bonus. Given this summers sporting battles between UK and Australia (3 Lions tests, 5 ashes tests), another UK v Aussie battle in the midst of summer should be a pretty easy sell, in a traditionally quiet time for boxing.
I'm looking forward to it.

Re: Barker v Geale
A good, solid, interesting fight.
If Barker performs like he did for the first 10 rounds of the Martinez fight, he'll win.

Re: Barker v Geale
Barker will get hit in the face and then quit.
Re: Barker v Geale
Hopefully Geale wins because of Barker going for the weak link.
Re: Barker v Geale
I don't think you can blame Barker for fighting Geale; after all, he already fought the #1 and came up only a little short. I'm not sure someone like him gets every option laid out and selects who he wants.
Re: Barker v Geale
Can't believe anybody is criticising Barker for facing Geale. What is wrong with people?

Re: Barker v Geale
Very evenly matched fight, both quite similar in styles, not too gung-ho but like to let the punches go and both are tough whatever else people say about Darren Barker he,s still a tough fighter, technically sound and has looked good since the Sergio Martinez fight albeit against lesser opposition,at least he never laboured against them so im inclined to think that he,s still got a lot to offer,im a big fan of Barker,i think he,s very underreated
Re: Barker v Geale
Why didnt he try and fight Golovkin then before his fight with Macklin was made then?SamWise72 wrote:I don't think you can blame Barker for fighting Geale; after all, he already fought the #1 and came up only a little short. Barker has already tried to beat the best when he fought Martinez.columbo wrote:Hopefully Geale wins because of Barker going for the weak link.
Was your post a joke?
Re: Barker v Geale
No. He could of tried to fight Golovkin or Quillin. Golovkin in particuliar hasnt exactly found it easy to get fights and in terms of cost I doubt he'd be that expensive. Lets be honest though, he'd never take that fight though as he'd get knocked out.Horse wrote:Barker has already tried to beat the best when he fought Martinez.columbo wrote:Hopefully Geale wins because of Barker going for the weak link.

Re: Barker v Geale
If Barker can get that world title then it'd be massive for UK boxing because you'd bank on him defending it over here and we'd be looking at opponents such as Murray, Macklin etc. Sturm would be a good one at Wembley for instance.
Obviously, it's a big ask. Geale has great stamina and will push Darren over 12. I think Barker might just come out swinging early on which would be a mistake. Geale will be there all night. Fingers crossed for Barker to do it though

Re: Barker v Geale
Has GGG been elevated to "Super" champ yet,i checked WBA website last month and he was still "Regular" and the super was vacant, surely if you hold the regular and the super refuses to fight you then as soon as the super champs stripped then the regular champ becomes super champ immedeitly,no?
Re: Barker v Geale
Geale is more proven than Golovkin or Quillin, he might be better than them.columbo wrote:No. He could of tried to fight Golovkin or Quillin. Golovkin in particuliar hasnt exactly found it easy to get fights and in terms of cost I doubt he'd be that expensive.
He took the Martinez fight and got knocked out. Why would he be so afraid of losing to Golovkin?columbo wrote:Lets be honest though, he'd never take that fight though as he'd get knocked out.
Your attack on Barker is absurd.

Re: Barker v Geale
Is Geale definietly more proven than those two guys though? Who are his best wins.... Mundine? Who whilst beating, he also lost to. Sturm? *who ran a mile from Golovkin and the WBA elevated him to super champion for that purpose*. Sebastian Sylvester? who Gregorz Prokska knocked out in 3 rounds. ..... Also why doesnt he hold the WBA super title anymore that he won again Sturm? Is it because he vacated it rather than fight Golovkin down the line?Horse wrote:Geale is more proven than Golovkin or Quillin, he might be better than them.columbo wrote:No. He could of tried to fight Golovkin or Quillin. Re: Barker v Geale
Who is Golovkins best win? I think the question is more who Golovkin has fought rather than who the others haven't. The fact of the matter is that Golovkins record contains no more, and probably less, good fighters than Geale. Sturm is a win which is head and shoulders above Golovkins record.columbo wrote:Is Geale definietly more proven than those two guys though? Who are his best wins.... Mundine? For you to come on and say you hope Barker loses for taking an easy route, when the 'hard' route is an unproven Golovkin, is tragic. Its a british fighter, fighting for a legitimate title in what will be a good fight. Again it's pathetic to hope he loses just because he didn't fight the less proven but more hyped fighter.

I'm looking forward to this both orthodox fighters with Barker's edge in power and Geale's high work rate .
Re: Barker v Geale
Should be a cracker, who do you think gets it? Favouring Barker personally.Final round wrote:I'm looking forward to this both orthodox fighters with Barker's edge in power and Geale's high work rate .
Re: Barker v Geale
I think its a good fight and I'm looking forward to it. Any ideas why it is in New York though? Just a compromise due to where both fighters are from or is there another reason - i.e is this the headline fight or will it be the support to something else?

Yeah I agree i think Barker is in with a great chance if he catches Geale i think he'll do him, he's a decent finisher but the Tasmanian is adaptable has a great engine and will try and rack up the points.DMA1987 wrote:Should be a cracker, who do you think gets it? Re fighting in New York, Geales promoted by Gary Shaw stateside, but a good neutral venue for both
Re: Barker v Geale
Unfortunately I see Geale edging a close points decision, with Barker in front after six, but tiring in the second half while the Tasmanian comes on strong...Final round wrote:Yeah I agree i think Barker is in with a great chance if he catches Geale i think he'll do him, he's a decent finisher but the Tasmanian is adaptable has a great engine and will try and rack up the points.DMA1987 wrote:Should be a cracker, who do you think gets it? Re: Barker v Geale
I made up for Barker to have another shot at a title... he has been plagued by injuries which meant he could never really train fully... fortunately he now says his injuries are in the past and can train harder.. i would love to see darren pick up a title before he retires.. just because i think barker is a very technically graceful boxer...
