The 'Contender' Rankings

Post by ALI »

What is with Boxrec's rankings of the guys from the Contender tv series. I have just noticed Manfredo is #18 at SuperMiddle, Mora is #7 at Middle and Gomez is #7 at Welter....... are any of the 3 big organisations (WBA - WBC - IBF) ranking these guys so highly? Its bloody dangerous if they are, these guys could get seriously hurt if given a title shot, its crazy.

Next thing you know, Joke Calzaghe will be beating on Manfredo Jr & calling it his defining fight :D

The sad truth is that there is probably a big demand in the USA to see just one of these guys in with a genuine top ten fighter. The US is full of sick weirdo's and disallusioned fools who probably actually believe that these guys could win a world title fight. The sad truth is any of the top guys would take them apart in the first round, it would be sickening to watch, even more sickening would be listening to the chants of the sick American fans whooping as another contender gets obliterated.

For reference PJ Maxwell has applied for Contender II following a conversation with SRL on his recent visit to these shores.

Well...

Ishe Smith was the only guy I was aware of before the whole telly thing kicked off, and he had a decent win over Randall Bailey. I think Mora beat Smith so maybe the computer's kicking in a bit there.

That said, although these guys do have the advantage of full-time training and are fringe-standard they'd still get mullered against a good champion.

They would get clobbered just the same, though maybe in round 2 or 3!

You have to remember that we struggle to get 5 or so of our fighters from all divisions into the top ten rankings at any one time. Fighters ranked 4th or 5th in the British rankings are, most of the time, well down the list in the world rankings and therefor would be at a similar level to the likes of those on the contender!

I disagree that all would get clobbered. Here in the US, we were well aware of Mora, Manfredo, and Ishe Smith prior to the show. Any of those three would certainly be competitive with any of the British top ten at 160.

Why must you compare all of us to the few ignorant fools who run their mouths too much? I come here to be respectful and talk boxing. By saying the things you say all you do is expose your ignorance and that you are no better than those you seek to criticize.

Mora is a junk fighter. I've said a hundred times that any top 20 middleweight contender would beat him silly. He's got 17 wins and 3 Ko's. And he has the attitude of someone who really accomplished something. Personally I thought Manfredo beat him by 2 points when I watched it the first time. I recently replayed it with the sound down and came up with the same score. But neither of these guys are gonna be top contenders. And the Boxrec rankins are all computerized. They don't have much relevance.

I think mora is better than manfredo, just because he performed poorly in his 2nd fight i don't think it makes manfredo better. Manfredo will get ko#ed by many top 20 fighters, i don't think manfredo will go far at all.

I can see ishe smith competing at a high level, mora's lack of power is what fucks it up for him.

Neither Mora nor Manfredo is gonna beat anyone in the top 10 or maybe even top 20. But I'd like to see Mora take a step up in his next fight. His attitude bothers me and the beating he'd take in stepping up should shut it for him.

This whole contender thing was a joke anyway. Don't understand why people take it so seriously.

On a side note I think that the best fighter in the series was Ishe Smith. He's clearly not a middleweight though. He scored a couple of nice wins over David Estrada and Randall Bailey down at welter and jr. middle. If he goes back down there I think he can compete.

I'm not a Brit. But are you saying that Mora, Gomez, Manfredo and Smith beat Howard Eastman?

Well if Patrick Maxwell is being considered for the next one which i'm sure will still feature the likes of Mora then we'll soon find out (I know Pat is really American anyway).

Ok how about these matchups who would win?

Alexander v Brinkley
Rhodes v Mora
Dann v Manfredo
Williams v Smith
Lockett v Gomez
Elcock v Bonsonte

I missed the early fights, but I have to say that Ishe and Mora were the only ones that impressed me. To be fair, the short format does skew things a bit - those that like to brawl, fight inside or rely on a big punch can be at a disadvantage, while slicksters like Mora can look better than they are.

The problem is that Smith is a blown-up welter. A good welter, but the likes of Dann or, god forbid, Alexander would knock him into next week if they caught him. Mora looked good, but he's a non-puncher, so we'll have to see if he can keep guys off him for 12 rounds. Still, I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the middleweight mix in a year or two.
