Re: The Worst TV Announcer of All-time.
Some of the dudes that call those Top Rank cards are pretty bad. I don't really remember their names, but they'll actually try to hype up guys with records that are beyond sh*t just to make there guy look like he's winning something.
Re: The Worst TV Announcer of All-time.
pacheco, czyz, jones jr, and foreman.
Re: The Worst TV Announcer of All-time.
cmon Klompton why so tough on the boxer commentators? Foreman was entertaining...and when you are entertaining you don't have to be clinically sound. lol.
Who do you think had a great eye for just what was really going on in the ring emprically? As bad as Cosell annoyed me, I found that when I would run the "replay" his quick eye was able to capture in real time whether a punch had found it's mark or not.....sometimes that's a real skill. IMHO. Thinks happen damn fast in the ring, and you have to have some serious focus power to get it right so often.

Johnson and Renallo are bad, but I'd take Gus.

I dont think Cosell was as bad as some think he was. He was definately entertaining and made the fight feel more like an event. Its something that Lampley and Kellerman have tried to ape but they come off as just shouting. Ive seen both screaming at what are essentially pedestrian fights trying "sell" them. The problem I have with Cosell is that he could be a cheerleader with his favorites and he did play favorites. He also got to a point where he thought he was part of the event. I cant stand that and its why I like Dunphy so much. He kind of stayed in the background and just let you appreciate what was happening. He pointed out things to the viewer that the viewer couldnt see, acting as your eyes and ears ringside. His book states his philosophy on announcing very well and I find I agree with it and his criticisms of modern commentators almost to a T. Tompkins was good. Ryan was pretty good. Larry Merchant was once a good color man but the older he got the more he seemed enamored with trying to think up "cute" things to say and sometimes picked on fighters unnecessarily. Im not a big fan of Bernstein. Hes knowledgeable but he kind of comes off as whiny. I think its more his voice than his actual ability. Alex Wallau was pretty good as well. Sam Taub was pretty fun to listen to as was Clem McCarty. Those guys lent an old fashioned feel to the old fights.

I can remember a friend years ago telling me Chick Hearn was the absolute worst. To me, no one really stand out as the worst.

I can't stand listening to Teddy Atlas, the man thats never wrong! He just keeps repeating the same thing over and over. And then if he's wrong he tries to make out he did actually call correctly how the fight would go or end.

Re: The Worst TV Announcer of All-time.
Jim Lampley is the all-time worst. In love with himself and cannot use one word when 10 will do. And now Max Kellerman is hot on his heels with the same style of endless self-regarding waffle.
Re: The Worst TV Announcer of All-time.
Worst ever? I don't know the names of these rotten sons of whores but it was the retarded team from top rank that did the commentary for zab Judah v Miguel cotto. I've never heard such a rude unprofessional insulting bunch of online warriors / microphone heroes. From the get go they questioned Judah courage and did the most biased commentary I ever heardRover wrote:Fire away.

Can't remember his name, but the Australian guy who has done some recent Chris John fights. Completely over the top and seems to know almost nothing about boxing other that what's happening in Australia/SE Asia

I love that guy! He's so bad it's hilarious, fantastic entertainment for all the wrong reasons.giacomino wrote:Can't remember his name, but the Australian guy who has done some recent Chris John fights. Colonel Bob Sheridan is awful, I don't like John Rawling, Jim Watt often talks absolute garbage and Teddy Atlas is just appalling

as much as i love him as a fighter as muchklompton wrote:... and foreman.
i can't believe my ears when he comments.

i agree he developed this idea to come up withklompton wrote:Larry Merchant was once a good color man but the older he got the more he seemed enamored with trying to think up "cute" things to say and sometimes picked on fighters unnecessarily.
big phrases ... terrible. but i give him all credit
in the world for seeing things like no one else.
i just say manny-marquez I, round 1. he was first
to say that juan came out unusually offensive and
he was the first to note that he had weathered
the storm.

And he seems to survive by using little more than standard boxing clichés. Dreadful.
Re: The Worst TV Announcer of All-time.
Was reminded of this guy on another thread. JOHN CONDON used to announce the fights on the MSG network. The guy was dreadful. You would think a guy working in boxing as long as Condon would have knowledge of what he was watching in the ring - not Condon. Also His voice was like fingernails on a blackboard.

Max Kellerman is one of the worst for sure. He is obnoxious and bias as hell. The guy can never give credit to a fighter that he doesn’t like. He is a condescending prick that never wants to be wrong.

Well, I'm assuming you are talking boxing announcers, because 'in all of sports' the list would be ridiculous.
I hated Gus Johnson the most of anyone ever. Until now. Sadly enough for me, the Gus Johnson replacement is even worse.
Mauro Ranallo with his minimal boxing knowledge, bad moment to moment calls (calling hooks as uppercuts and leads as counters and such), feigned excitment and his over-the-top annoying on air persona voice, almost ruins those showtime broadcasts for me.

Yeah, I meant boxing announcers. Gus and Mauro are the worst. I said Gus because I suffered through much more of him, but Mauro's rapidly catching up.uptconnect wrote:Well, I'm assuming you are talking boxing announcers, because 'in all of sports' the list would be ridiculous.

Re: The Worst TV Announcer of All-time.
It has to be Jim Lampley. Maybe there are worse announcers, but, I pick Lampley on top of my head.
Re: The Worst TV Announcer of All-time.
B.J. Flores sucks, Gus Johnson sucks, Mauro Ranallo sucks (both in Boxing and MMA...I just don't like the dude's voice)...I don't know I tend not to remember the names of the sucky ones usually unless I see them a lot.
Some of the older fights in my collection with Ferdie Pacheco on the call definitely tells me he sucked real bad, and was an obnoxious douchebag on top of it.
Some of my favorites are Lampley, Merchant, Steve Farhood, Don Dunphy, Howard Cosell and Al Bernstein. I wish Showtime would put Farhood on the big fights instead of just using him on ShoBox. He knows his stuff.
I always liked Nick Charles too, may he rest in peace.
Re: The Worst TV Announcer of All-time.
Put Tompkins on the big fights, replacing Renallo. God, he's awful.gilgamesh wrote:Always the hate for Jim Lampley, the guy is a great commentator and is the perfect guy to have the call in a great fight.

Barry Tompkins taking Renallo's spot would be just fine by me. Really I don't see why they couldn't just use Farhood though, they already have him at Showtime.Rover wrote:Put Tompkins on the big fights, replacing Renallo. Tompkins for blow-by-blow; Farhood could be another analyst, I guess, though I really like Bernstein.gilgamesh wrote:Barry Tompkins taking Renallo's spot would be just fine by me. Tompkins was great. Haven't heard much of him since his FOX days. He had great chemistry with colorman Rich Marotta, another underrated and overlooked boxing announcer.
