Can anyone identify this classic Los Angeles boxing match??

Post by klompton »

Can anyone identify this classic boxing match? I purchased a 16mm film of it but I have no idea who it is. I believe the venue is either the Sports Arena or the Olympic in Los Angeles:

Are you sure it's a classic? At times the white fighter looks somewhat like Armando Muniz but the crowd's attire (lots of thin ties and a turtleneck) looks more like a fight from the late 60's. Muniz turned pro in 1970. Someone help Klompton. I'm dying to know too.

I use there term classic in the sense that its old, lol. No I dont know if its a great fight. It could very well be Muniz. I have no idea.

Absolutely no sound? Any signs to possibly identify the arena. The Olympic always had The Olympic sign visible in the background. How long did the film last and did they show a winner? KO or decision?

Is it possible to post the film on youtube, then send a link ? Watching their styles could help.

It looks like Mando Muniz but it isn't and it's also not Bobby Chacon.
This is from the Olympic Aud, for sure. Likely late 60's, not 70's.
It could be a prelim fight? More definition is necessary. I knew just about everybody from then & there.

A couple more details. The fight goes ten rounds. It appears to be a split decision. Jimmy Lennon Sr., dressed in a maroon suit, begins to read the decision. After a second the black fighter raises his hands as if one judge voted for him. When Lennon is finished the Latino looking fighter raises his hands and has clearly won. The fight was a phone booth battle with the Latino relying heavily on his left hook. I have about six or seven rounds of the ten and I saw no knockdowns. In the ninth the black fighter stumbles a bit while off balance in a corner but thats about it.

No, I need to get this thing transferred from 16mm. It has a soundtrack so once I do that I'll be able to tell.

I'm leaning somewhere between '69 and '72. I'm positive that's Jimmy Robertson seated ringside at the far left on the 3rd pic down. That would have been his heyday and had probably been announced in the ring.

It will be about a month before I get it back but heres my guess, its a total shot in the dark but Im guessing its Ruben Navarro Vs. Juan Collado with Lee Grossman as the referee. If I had a photo of Collado Id know better.

Klomp, Collado was a tall long-armed fighter from the DR whom I saw fight Felipe Torres and Cesar Sinda. This is not him. Also, I saw Navarro fight many times also and he always had the bandito mustache and sideburns until El Ruso Loco took him over in late '72. Definitely not Ruben. Still working on this one. It bugs me.

As a child growing up in East L.A., my wife personally knew the Maravilla Kid Ruben Navarro.
(Has plenty of unseemly tales to tell about him).
She took one look at the picture and flatly said "That's not Ruben Navarro."
I would agree as the Latino fighter appears mucho mas stockier than Ruben.

You would think that after 10 months of conjecture, the actual fighters would come forward and identify themselves.

Maybe it is Ruben Olivares vs Jose Cervantes.

EDIT: not possible, just saw it was a 10 rounder.

Don't believe Olivares ever fought at the Olympic. Most here agree that this fight was held at the fabled downtown L.A. arena.
Also, the Latino fighter appears much too bulky to be the bantamweight Olivares.

Any thought that the Latino is Shotgun Alvarado, a popular figure at the Olympic?

It is Eddie Garcia Vs Jimmy Fields March 27, 1969 Olympic Auditorium. Not a bad little fight.
