Mike 'The Bounty' Hunter
I didn't get to see many of his fights at the time, but I always thought he was a fighter people avoided. With the right backing, trainer and promoter, I wonder what me might have achieved.
He had wins over Oliver McCall, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Pinklon Thomas, Jimmy Thunder, Jose Maria Flores Burlon, Tyrell Biggs, Alexander Zolkin, Cecil Coffee and Arthur Weathers.
He drew with an unbeaten James Pritchard and lost very close decisions to Frans Both and Levi Billups.

He could've been a solid top-10 contender but would've lost to the top dogs (Lewis, Holyfield, Bowe, Moorer, etc).

I think he would have beaten Mercer. His style was completely wrong for Ray.Rover wrote:He could've been a solid top-10 contender but would've lost to the top dogs (Lewis, Holyfield, Bowe, Moorer, etc).

Very well could have--especially if the Ferguson I one showed up.keithmoonhangover wrote:I think he would have beaten Mercer. His style was completely wrong for Ray.Rover wrote:He could've been a solid top-10 contender but would've lost to the top dogs (Lewis, Holyfield, Bowe, Moorer, etc).

If any Mercer showed up IMO. Mercer always had problems with savvy movers. That's probably why he was never matched against Hunter.Rover wrote:Very well could have--especially if the Ferguson I one showed up.keithmoonhangover wrote:I think he would have beaten Mercer. Arkward and good fighter from what i saw of him, When he beat Thunder, Thunder was i think underfeated or had only 1 loss and he whuuped him bad. Seen a few other fights he was in , top ten i reckon with good management.

Yes, I think you're right that he was avoided. He was a spoiler who would have caused great difficulty for just about anybody. It's hard to imagine anything other than a frustrated Mercer offering a bribe in the clinch had Ray stepped in with him, and I think the old glacier slow Foreman would have been slapped silly.keithmoonhangover wrote:I didn't get to see many of his fights at the time, but I always thought he was a fighter people avoided. I think what he probably lacked most was discipline.

Yes, George was an ATG, but we're talking about Old George, not that one. George might have been able to land a hail Mary, but the second incarnation was so slow he wouldn't have been able to hit Hunter, or a number other guys fighting during that time. His second career was managed brilliantly as he avoided anyone of consequence prior to getting his big money shot at Holyfield. Even a young George wasn't able to catch a more stationary Jimmy Young, and while Hunter wasn't as good a defensive fighter as Young, he was faster on his feet than Young, and Old George was painfully slow.evrenb wrote:Mike the bounty hunter died in rooftop police chase didnt he..really liked this boxer...i disagree with foreman prediction...george is an all time great and would havr kayoed mike more than certainly...
Am I the only one that remembers the powerfull, but marginally talented Morrison schooling Old George? Hunter outboxed a few skilled boxers that George would have never stepped in the ring with.
Everybody has this fantasy image of Foreman being something that he wasn't. Big, powerful, with a cast iron will, even the younger George was susceptible to boxers. Why do you think his management team avoided skilled defensive fighters like the plague during both of his careers?
Re: Mike 'The Bounty' Hunter
Your entitled to your opinion...from my view I feel george, even the 'glacier' like older version would have kayoed mike but you never know I guess...jimmy young was a master boxer not sure on that comparison? Mike hunter was a decent top ten/twenty ranked heavyweight for a time. I have many of his fights on tape..for me george by ko but I respect your view.
